PODCAST: Reducing Your Attack Surface with Avaya Stealth Networks
Ehtan Banks, Avaya

"The problem with 'covering your tracks' in network security is that your 'covering' becomes more conspicuous than your 'tracks'," says Ed Koehler, Distinguished Engineer for Avaya's Networking Division.

Ed joins Greg Ferro and Ethan Banks for a ninja nerd-fest outlining a set of technologies that not only offer some innovative ways to set up your security architecture, but also simplifies the way that you do it.

The Packet Pushers team specifically discusses with Ed how to segment for greater anomaly identification, how to streamline your firewall strategy, and how an ISID-VLAN-VRF combination can create truly independent stealth networks.

Ed also outlines how customers are using this technology in healthcare, government, retail, and transportation to comply with industry regulations such as PCI and HIPAA. This show gets fairly nerdy, digging into L2 and L3 segmentation and exactly how that gets done with Shortest Path Bridging in the Avaya implementation.

Ed is an unapologetic details guy, and the conversation gets into the weeds (in the best possible way) regarding just how frames traverse an SPB fabric in the context of "stealth."

Mitel Proposes to Acquire ShoreTel for $8.10 Per Share in Cash

OTTAWA, Oct. 20, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mitel® (Nasdaq:MITL) (TSX:MNW) today disclosed that it has made a proposal to the ShoreTel, Inc. (Nasdaq:SHOR) Board of Directors to acquire all of the outstanding shares of ShoreTel common stock for $8.10 per share in cash, representing a total equity value of approximately $540 million. This offer represents a 24% premium to ShoreTel's closing stock price on October 17, 2014, and a 30% premium to ShoreTel's enterprise value.

"The business communications market is rapidly consolidating and Mitel has clearly stated that we intend to be a consolidator in this market. We see a compelling opportunity to bring together two market innovators with strong and complementary market footprints, particularly in the U.S. where ShoreTel does more than 90% of its business, in a way that delivers significant value and opportunities to the shareholders, customers and employees of both companies," said Richard McBee, President and CEO of Mitel. "We are disappointed that the ShoreTel Board has rejected our proposal and refused to engage with us. Mitel continues to believe that the proposal offers ShoreTel shareholders an attractive premium. We remain open to constructive and progressive discussions and for that reason I have advised the ShoreTel Board that our proposal will remain open until 5pm EST on November 20, 2014."

Free Hardware - For Life

Unitrends Logo

What!  When was the last time you ever heard of something for Free, let alone Free for Life?  Especially without an asterisk and the associated small print that commits you to give away you're first born or other significant asset.

We're serious, since our inception in 1989, Unitrends has put delighting customers, customer loyalty and long term value at the very top of our priority list and this promotion is designed to do exactly that, serve our customers with delight and long term value.

Everyone in IT knows, hardware failure is one of the primary causes of disaster, outage and catastrophic failure, and of course it never happens at the best of times.  Always on the weekend or at 2 AM resulting in the dreaded phone call, dragging you out of your warm bed into the cold of night to fix the problem before you lose too much data, revenue or profitability.  As fans, disk drives, power supplies and other hardware components age, the probability of failure and outage goes up. Each component has its own Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF), however, the more components in a single system the lower the overall MTBF for the total system, so don't get caught with an aging system that is approaching a high probability of failure.

State CIOs List Security as Top Priority for 2015
By Kenneth Corbin - Nov 7, 2014 - CIO.com

CIOs at federal departments and agencies may have their hands full as they grapple with a bevy of mandates and government-wide initiatives to modernize their IT deployments, but state CIOs are carrying a heavy load, as well.

The National Association of State CIOs (NASCIO) recently surveyed its members to identify their goals for the coming year and their priorities for purchasing services and applications.

Priority 1: Cybersecurity

State CIOs name cybersecurity as their top priority for 2015, setting their sights on areas like risk assessment, governance and the appropriate levels of funding to shore up digital government systems. Additionally, CIOs say that they are aiming to guard against insider threats and tighten up their monitoring of the third parties that are handling more and more vital processes at a time of increased outsourcing.

It's a concern that NASCIO is working to address on an institutional level. On Wednesday, the organization announced that it received a $100,000 grant from the Department of Justice to develop and promote repeatable practices for responding to a cyber incident and deploying cyber analytics across state governments.
