CCC Takes Time Out to Honor One of the Best in the Business - Congratulations and Thank You Ronald Jones

It began with a simple email between long-time dear friends.

"Have not had the pleasure of talking with you in a long time. I hope all is well with you and your family."

CCC Technologies Vice President of Operations, Juan Rodriguez, and Mr. Ronald Jones, R.M. ET1 PO1 LPO USN/USNR retired, have a friendship that began over two decades ago when Mr. Jones was an engineer and also a trainer for AT&T/Lucent. Over the years, Mr. Jones has taught several generations "the trade" and has also volunteered his time for many veteran's organizations.

For medical reasons, Mr. Jones made the decision to hang up his tools after an amazing 45 year career. But it was what he chose to do with those tools that demonstrates not only his character, but the power of long-standing friendships.

"I want you to have my voice/data tool case to give to a new, young voice/data engineer just getting started in the business. No one in my family has followed in my footsteps... and I know you will give them to some deserving new Tech."

Juan was so touched by the gracious gesture that he shared Mr. Jones' message with the company and the team came together to plan another CASH (CCC Afternoon Social Hour) event on Thursday, September 4th to honor Mr. Jones and celebrate his career, accomplishments, and generosity. So we fired up the grill and brought out the pool cues and bags for a delicious lunch and a chance to meet with and thank Mr. Jones.

(L to R) Juan Rodriguez, Ronald Jones, Randy Sherwood, Jim Poull
A very special thanks to Juan and Jim for yet another fun CCC Afternoon Social Hour lunch
Nothing like getting a quick game of bags in for lunch.
The entire team a CCC Technologies would like to extend a most heartfelt thank you to Mr. Ronald Jones, not only for an amazing career spent teaching voice/data to generations of engineers but also for his very generous donation of his "tools of the trade" to be used by a whole new generation of engineers. Congratulations on your well-deserved retirement Mr. Jones, you are welcome back for social hour anytime!

The Importance of Unified Threat Management (UTM)
Tony Gabriel, ConvergeSecure Engineer
Unified Communications

Imagine the following:

A high-profile data breach has affected your organization. Maybe clients are experiencing identity theft, fraud - or perhaps you're just seeing signs of trouble internally. Web or email servers are "running hot" or experiencing irregular behavior.

But you did everything right! - You deleted suspicious emails, kept your antivirus suite up to date... and even passed your wisdom and policies on to the front desk. Recent high-profile breaches like those of Target & more recently Apple's iCloud service may get all the press, but no one is immune, big or small. But breaches only happen to those who are careless - right?

The answer is unfortunate - Not quite. Antivirus solutions, and even common sense simply aren't enough anymore.

They're still a great start - and arguably still a necessity, but still depend on "fingerprinting" known malware against a central database. No fingerprint - no guarantees.

Congratulations to Metaphrasis Language & Cultural Solutions, LLC for a great 2014! They have had quite a few major accomplishments this year including a certification from the WBENC, and Founder, Elizabeth Coln, named the SBA's Illinois National Small Business Person of the Year. Elizabeth attended the award gala in Washington during National Small Business Week where she had the opportunity to meet with top SBA officials and national business leaders.

As a result of her award, Metaphrasis & Elizabeth had quite a bit of media coverage, from television to print. One of our favorites was Elizabeth's interview on WGN. Watch the video.

To say a special thank you to clients, staff, the community and supporters, Metaphrasis hosted an Appreciation Event on August 20th.  It was a special evening filled with great anecdotes and good laughs. We wish Metaphrasis continuing success for the remainder of 2014 and in the years to come.

Gartner Validates Mitel's Leadership in Latest Magic Quadrant
Mitel Logo

OTTAWA, Aug. 6, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Mitel (Nasdaq:MITL) (TSX:MNW), a global leader in business communications, today announced it has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the Leaders quadrant of the latest Magic Quadrant for Unified Communications.

"Mitel has made bold moves this past year with a series of in-house innovations and acquisitions that have deepened our portfolio, expanded our global reach and accelerated our cloud communications solutions. We did this for our customers to offer broader choice and better service to help make them more successful. We believe our innovation and expansion contributed greatly to our move from the Visionary to the Leaders Quadrant," said Rich McBee, CEO, Mitel.

Over the last twelve months, Mitel has emerged as a global leader in business communications, with #1 market share in EMEA and Western Europe, as well as market share gains in the highly competitive North American market where it now has a #3 market share position*. Further driving the company's momentum is its portfolio of Cloud communications along with its integrated business communications solutions. This includes contact center in addition to traditional unified communications.

This is the second Gartner Magic Quadrant in recent months where Mitel has advanced. Mitel was positioned in the Challengers Quadrant, up from niche player in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Contact Center Infrastructure [Drew Kraus, Steve Blood and Sorell Slaymaker, May 22, 2014].

In addition to Mitel's fully integrated business communications approach and flexible cloud options, Mitel believes that focusing on protecting its customers' investments and extending their value contributed to its move to the Leaders Quadrant. For instance, Mitel offers the industry's broadest portfolio of solutions, including those that maximize the Microsoft investment and leverage Lync.

The Software-Defined Data Center and Fortinet's new SDN Solution for VMware
Warren Wu | Fortinet | Published 08/25/14
Fortinet LogoIt's the week before Labor Day, and for most of folks in the U.S. that means the end of summer is approaching. But for many of us involved with the data center, it means another exciting virtualization confab is underway in San Francisco with VMworld 2014 at Moscone Center. Of course VMware has long been about more than just server virtualization - over the years, we've seen broader focus around VDI and end-user computing, private and hybrid cloud, and more recently network virtualization with NSX.

VMware's broader message on the latter is the Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC), meaning it's more than just about the network alone, but it's also software-defined compute, storage, etc. As an old colleague of mine on the vSphere product management team pointed out to me, the ESXi hypervisor has really been software-defined compute and storage for many years now, having long done more than just abstract hardware like the CPU into its virtual equivalents. Securing software-defined network traffic is becoming increasingly challenging - using hardware security appliances that can only inspect at a few fixed, static points in the physical network risks losing visibility or applying the correct rules on increasingly abstracted and dynamic network flows. As soon as virtual switches were introduced in early hypervisors, inter-VM traffic could now bypass the physical network; SDN further exacerbates this with additional constructs like overlay/underlay tunnels and logical (i.e. changeable) ports, IP's and MAC addresses.

Fortinet is previewing this year our new FortiGate-VMX virtual appliance integrated with VMware's SDDC platform, interoperable with vSphere, vCloud, and NSX. While Fortinet has long invested in VMware solutions, with nearly a dozen security virtual appliances released in the past few years for vSphere, FortiGate-VMX represents a major leap forward with tight hypervisor integration and orchestration. FortiGate-VMX has direct visibility into all virtualized network traffic in ESX, and is further coordinated to automatically scale up and down to secure elastic workloads and ESX clusters. What this ultimately means is security itself is yet another layer of Infrastructure-as-a-Service that can be agile and software-defined as well, to provide seamless and consistent security for and as part of the underlying SDDC platform.

For more about our new VMware-based solution please check out our launch announcement. If you are attending VMworld U.S. in San Francisco this year, please come by Booth #410 to learn more about FortiGate-VMX and our other solutions for VMware environments.

How to Explain the Cloud to End Users
By Kim Lindros- August 27, 2014 - CIO.com
Managed Services
Popular culture has exposed a fundamental knowledge gap in the ordinary consumer. Even though our smartphones are set up to auto-save pics to our online accounts, we enjoy hours of streaming videos and music, and we regularly use online email, a lot of people don't know where all this information is stored. They just know it's "in the cloud."

Helping a typical employee understand the cloud can go a long way toward protecting sensitive data and keeping files in house, where they belong. This article discusses the cloud in plain-speak and may be a good tool for your next security awareness training session.
