Ask the Expert "September Should Be Emergency Preparedness Month for Business"
Tim Blevons, Customer Care Center Representative
It is hard to believe it has been 12 years since America was attacked. Ever since that fateful day of September 11, 2001, our clients have engaged us in countless discussions about "Disaster Recovery," "Emergency Preparedness," and "Business Continuity". Although heightened awareness of terrorist threats has kept our country safe, we have witnessed numerous other disasters, in monstrous proportions, over the past decade. Whether man made or natural, disasters are occurring more often and with regularity. In August 2011, Hurricane Irene hit the eastern seaboard, although New York City was spared a direct hit by the downgraded storm, there was catastrophic flooding in New York, New Jersey, and Vermont. One week earlier an unprecedented magnitude 5.8 earthquake rocked the east coast. Watch the recording here. Despite that recognition, most companies still put way more effort into wooing new customers rather than keeping existing ones happy - this despite the widespread recognition that retaining customers is far less expensive than acquiring new ones.

Spam has plagued e-mail users since its inception. Users obtain a brand new e-mail address only to be pummeled with spam and phishing campaigns usually within a matter of hours.
Without fail, cybercriminals seem to have access to a never-ending supply of e-mail addresses and other personally identifying information to fuel spam, phishing and malware activities.
That isn't by accident. One of the ways cybercriminals can tap into that bottomless well of personally identifying information is through a Directory Harvesting Attack (DHA).
"A DHA is an assault on an e-mail server in an attempt to pilfer legitimate e-mail addresses that can be added to databases for future spam campaigns. The attack occurs when spammers leverage known e-mail addresses to uncover other legitimate e-mail addresses from corporate or ISP servers." Read more... By Rich Hein - August 7, 2013 - CIO.com
IT walks a fine line between balancing security issues and giving people the tools they need to get the job done. Every day companies move sensitive data around and IT is in charge of securing that data, but what about the little things that tend to fall through the cracks?
According to data from several recent surveys there are a number of things your employees could be inadvertently doing that puts your company's sensitive data and information at risk. A survey done recently by IPSwitch, an FTP software organization, includes some of the reasons employees are putting sensitive data into places where IT has no control over what happens to it: - To circumvent file-size limits prescribed for work email
- Third-party mail is faster and has fewer restrictions than corporate email tools
- For use in their next place of employment
- They find it difficult to connect to work email when outside of the office
- IT doesn't monitor what they're sending via personal email
