"How to Protect an Excel Workbook"
Johnny Christian, Senior ConvergeSecure® Engineer
Johnny Christian

Excel includes a command to protect a workbook. This prevents others from making changes to the layout. You can assign a password so only users who know the password can un-protected and make changes to the structure and layout.

Protecting a workbook does not prevent others from making any changes to the contents. To protect cell contents, you have to use the protect sheet command button on the review tab.

June Jumble Answer
Infographic: Why Bad Customer Service is Bleeds Your Company Dry
Eric Lai, Avaya
avaya logoThis blog post isn't a dissertation about fast-food hamburger advertising, but about customer service. Obviously, every company pays lip service to to the idea of making their customers' experience great. But lots of things get in the way. The need to cut costs, or be efficient with finite resources.
Tradeoffs are a normal part of business. But the costs of poor customer service have traditionally been under-appreciated, because they used to be indirect, hard to measure, and took place over a long time (longer than the typical executive tenure, anyway).

Today companies better understand the costs and benefits of their customer service strategy, due to things like Net Promoter Scores and concepts like Customer Lifetime Value (the subject of a 200-page Avaya book arriving in July - watch this space). Data increasingly shows that high-effort, tiring experiences drive customers away.

Take this survey released today by Harris Interactive and sponsored by Avaya. 66% of the 2,100 U.S. adults surveyed by Harris said that they will leave companies that make getting customer service "high effort." 37% say they  are extremely likely to leave.

Ability Cloud Service Helps Attorneys Capture the Time and Revenue Spent on Mobile and Desktop Smartphones
ESI_Logo
Estech Systems, Inc. (ESI) unveiled a new cloud-based billing app this week at the ABA TECHSHOW 2013 that will tip the revenue scales in favor of law firms. ESI, an innovator of business phone systems and cloud services, today announced Abillity
, a unique new app that automatically captures billable time spent on both desktop and mobile smartphones. Where traditional time-tracking tools fail in their inability to work on desktop phones, Abillity shines by allowing attorneys to recover billable hours and revenue from often forgotten, undocumented, or untimed calls.

ESI Ability "Surveys indicate that lawyers lose valuable billable hours to phone calls that go untracked," said George Platt, President and Chief Operating Officer of ESI. "Factor in the non-billable time they spend reconciling call records, and a lawyer can lose five or more hours each month - that quickly adds up to a sizeable amount of revenue. Abillity gives law firms a simple-to-use interface to eliminate lost hours."

If you have an email account, it's pretty much guaranteed that you've seen a scam email... or worse, fallen prey to one.

There is a big percentage of emails in cyberspace that belongs to the scam category. Emails that asks you to fill-out a survey form for a chance to win a vacation of a lifetime. Perhaps you've received an email that asks you about your financial information because they want to give you a big inheritance. Maybe it's an email that wants to let you in on an online deal that seems too good to be true.

But scamming is not confined to the domain of email alone: viruses and malware can also be used for scamming. Your computer can be infected by malware that pretends to be a legitimate antivirus program. It might tell you that your PC is crawling with viruses and infections and they can help you get rid of it: it's only $29.95 and comes with a "money-back guarantee"! A cyber criminal might get your phone number from an online directory or from malware on your PC that watches for personally identifiable information and then calls you pretending to be your bank: "We need to update our systems," they'll say. "Can you please provide me with the following information?"

Backup & Recovery

Unitrends launched a new web site over the weekend.  Tina Dussault, our guru of all things web-related, led a tremendous effort over the last few months to make this happen - thanks to her, and to all those who contributed to this effort.  It's amazing to me the incredible complexity and advanced technology that is necessary to build modern web sites that are so sophisticated that they appear simple to web site visitors.

CIOs Need to Up Thier Outsourcing Vendor Management Game
By Stephanie Oversby - June 28, 2013 - CIO.com
Managed ServicesThere's no question that the IT outsourcing industry is undergoing some fundamental changes. IT leaders are looking for more innovation from their partners. Business users are bypassing IT to procure their own technology services and products. And outsourcing providers are struggling to understand the shifting dynamics of their deals and relationships.

Yet, amid all this transformation, many buyers continue to employ an outdated approach to IT outsourcing governance, according to a Forrester report earlier this year on the state of the IT services market.

"The combination of business-led innovation, new vendors and delivery models, and the shakeout in the provider ranks means that senior IT management has to fundamentally change how it approaches supplier governance," the authors of the Forrester report wrote. "The endless focus on a cost-based procurement model has left companies with rock bottom prices, but poor delivery and execution track records."

As changes in decision-making, delivery models, and supplier positioning take hold, CIOs will need to take their vendor management game to a new level, says Forrester vice president and principal analyst John C. McCarthy, who co-authored the report. IT leaders need to remodel their vendor management groups from a centralized procurement-centric organization to a more decentralized supplier management group focused on business outcomes, according to McCarthy.
