Response to questions regarding IP phone security vulnerability

9670G Phone Idle

A recent study discovered security vulnerabilities in Cisco IP phones, demonstrating that the IP phone's serial console port can be used to gain access to the phone, creating the potential for remote eavesdropping and the initiation of attacks on other devices in the network.

Gizmodo Article from January 10, 2013

Mainstream news sources have reported IP telephone security vulnerability discoveries made by a private research institution conducting a study under a U.S. Defense Department grant ("Study") and documented in the Cisco Native UNIX Kernel System Call susceptibility CVE-2012-5445 ("CVE"). The kernel in Cisco Native Unix (CNU) on Cisco Unified IP Phone 7900 series devices (aka TNP phones) does not properly validate unspecified system calls, which allows attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory overwrite) via a crafted binary.

Avaya products do not use Cisco Native Unix. The security weaknesses highlighted in this Study are demonstrated in instances where a serial console port is used as a means for gaining direct physical access to an IP telephone. Once access to the IP telephone is achieved, rogue files may be installed and the IP telephone may be otherwise hacked, perhaps permitting remote eavesdropping and the initiation of attacks on other devices on the network, as revealed within the reported Study.

Since my last post , I have received a few questions about Mitel StreamLine. I thought I would take a few minutes to answer these questions.

Q: Which phone systems are supported with Mitel StreamLine?

A: As of December 1, 2012, Mitel now supports the Mitel StreamLine on any variant of Mitel Communications Director (MCD) ; on Mitel 5000 Communications Platform (CP); and on Mitel SX-200 ICP.

Q: We are a small company with 16 phones and are currently looking to replace an aging phone system. Would you suggest we look at the MCD with the StreamLine or Mitel's digital sets on the 5000 CP?

A: That's a great question! I think you need to look at your business and see what system makes the most sense for you. Right off the bat I would say based on your company size the 5000 CP with digital sets probably is the best solution. I would have to know a bit more about your business, however the 5000 CP is a great product and it allows you to move to Mitel IP phones at your own pace. In addition there are some great promotional bundles on right now. You can find out more about the Mitel 5000 CP here.

Q: We currently have a telephone system that requires 2-pairs to each telephone; however we don't want to pull additional cabling. Can we split the cables to have two phones where we have one now?

A: Yes, you certainly can! The phones you are using utilize 2-pair wiring and you only require a single pair to make the Mitel StreamLine work. Thus, with two pairs, you can have two Mitel phones where you once had one phone.

Q: I see Mitel has a 0% leasing promotion on right now. Does this apply to the Mitel StreamLine?

A: Absolutely. As long as you meet the requirements of the promotion, you can include this in your 0% lease. It is important to note 0% leasing is not available in every country Mitel operates - so you will need to speak to your Mitel authorizedPARTNER.

Q: Have you installed a Mitel StreamLine yet?

A: We are just about to install our first one. We have a hotel that has multiple buildings on their property - many of which are not physically attached. In addition, the administration phones (currently Mitel SuperSet 4000 series digital phones) are scattered across the property. We will be using the Mitel StreamLine to connect the administration and facilities offices back to the Mitel SX-200 ICP. All digital phones will become Mitel 5300 Series IP Phones. In addition the Mitel SuperConsole 1000 will be replaced with a Mitel 5540 IP Console. We are looking forward to this project!

As you can see from the questions I have been getting, the Mitel StreamLine is experiencing a quick uptake in the field. Companies that found it difficult to migrate from their aging analog or digital phone systems due to cabling constraints are now seeing a new way to re-use what they have and gain the benefits of IP at the desktop! In addition companies that were pushing telecom projects off until cable infrastructures were updated are now seeing a way to migrate quicker; and in some cases in a less expensive manner.

Unitrends Recovery-943: The Soul of a New Backup Appliance (Part 3)

Mark Campbell, Unitrends | Modern Backup 2 Blog

Backup & Recovery
Unitrends recently introduced the Unitrends Recovery-943. This appliance  is the next generation flagship of the Unitrends Recovery-series of backup appliances. We began this series of blog posts by discussing why backup appliances are experiencing such rapid demand and adoption, and will continue the discussion in the next few posts by addressing the challenges facing enterprise-class data protection backup appliance vendors. We will then discuss the Recovery-943 architecture and the specific responses that the designers of the Recovery-943 had to each of the challenges discussed in this post.

Failure and Data Loss

Imagine you were designing an airplane that would be used for transoceanic flight. If you design the airplane with one engine, you minimize failure. There are fewer things to go wrong, right? And there are other advantages. You can sell the airplane you create for less money and still make more profit. And the airline service that buys it can thus charge less for tickets and make it cheaper for people to fly to visit their families and do business across the ocean.

Minimizing failure seems like a really great idea - until you think about the consequence of failure. If you design your airplane with two engines and insure that the airplane can successfully fly with only a single engine, you double the risk of single engine failure on any particular flight but you dramatically lower the risk of the airplane crashing into the ocean.

Backup appliance designers live in a world in which failure is a constant threat which must be avoided when possible but always planned for and handled regardless. Backup appliance designers carefully use an assortment of advanced techniques to handle failure. A backup appliance overall and each component in a backup appliance is evaluated for its potential for failure using tools such as MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) and AFR (Annualized Failure Rate.)

How BYOD Saved VMware $2 Million
By Thor Olavsrud - February 1, 2013 - CIO.com
Managed ServicesAs more and more organizations explore the possibilities of bring-your-own-device (BYOD), it has become an oft-repeated refrain: Don't expect to save money by going the BYOD route. But a number of high-profile companies-Cisco, VMware and Ingram Micro among them-have reported significant savings.

What's their secret?

It seems counter-intuitive, but last year, Aberdeen Group found that the costs for a company with 1,000 mobile devices go up by $170,000, on average, when they adopt BYOD. Why? Hidden costs. Premiums go up because employees no long have access to volume discount rates. The number of expense reports processed skyrockets, meaning more processing costs. Then there are setup, security and compliance costs and more.
