"Changing the Phone Number for Your Avaya EC500 (Extension to Cellular) Remotely"
Daniel De Leonardis, Customer Support Unit Engineer

Dan De LeonardisWhen using the Avaya EC500 (Extension to Cellular) feature, there might come a time when you need to change the number that is programmed in the system but don't have access to system administrator to make the necessary changes. There is a feature that is available in the system called SAFE.

Using the SAFE Access Code, users can self-administer cell phone numbers for use with Extension to Cellular. The user calls one of up to four SAFE access codes and enters the cell phone number to add or change. SAFE automatically enables Extension to Cellular, and the cell phone number is recorded in the Stations with Off-PBX Telephone Integration screen (change off-pbx telephone station-mapping) on the Phone Number field. The administration sequence for the user differs based on what phone is used to access SAFE.

Before this feature can work, the station has to have EC500 already set up in the off-pbx-telephone station-mapping form in site administration. This feature can change the number for EC500 but it won't program EC500 on the station. This must be done in site administration.

Eliminating 911 Misdials in Your MLTS/PBX
Mark J. Fletcher, ENP , Avaya
avaya logo

You just tried to call your friend overseas, but instead you accidentally got: "911 where's your emergency?"

One of the biggest problems that plague E 911 call takers and dispatchers are false or accidental 911 calls. Often they come from children playing with uninitialized cell phones, yes they can still dial 911, and we've all heard the humorous stories about youngsters needing help with their math homework, and some adults acting like children when they don't get their Western bacon cheeseburger at the drive-through.

Probably the biggest cause of 911 misdials is the proverbial "butt dial" where users accidentally hit the speed dial sequence for 911 on their mobile phone while in their pocket. Enterprise PBXs are also a common source of calls to 911 when the user didn't intentionally plan on making that call. The problem here is that in many cases the PBX doesn't report station level caller ID, or if it does, in many cases the carrier will overwrite that information with the main billing telephone number, especially on 911 calls. This can cause the source of the offending person or device to remain 'hidden' adding to the frustration level of those trying to help.

Over the last few years there has been an increase in network usage in many companies, whether it is the implementation of cloud services for flexible data management or the trending BYOD (bring-your-own-device). With this added stress, more and more companies need to start thinking about hands-on measures to avoid network downtime. Gartner recently forecasted the top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2013 and listed Mobile Device Battles, Mobile Applications and HTML5, and Personal Cloud as the top three items - it is evident that network infrastructures will be taking a major hit with usage rapidly growing.

Companies, small and large will begin to see a shift towards the needs of amplifying their network infrastructures to solutions that are not only cost effective but have a core focus on comprehensive network monitoring with proactive measures to immediately troubleshoot issues as they arise.

ESI 60 Business Phone
Powerful - but friendly

Despite its long list of features, an IP Server 900 - thanks to famous ESI ease-of-use - is a truly user-friendly phone system. It says, "Good morning." It teaches you how to use and program it. It reminds you to change your personal greeting after a trip. And it stands by, ready to assist you whenever you need help. There are several different models of ESI desktop phones. Each is a compact, attractive addition to any desk, designed to simplify your telecommunications. Here are just two examples:

  • The display is large and easy to read; that's even more true for a backlit display, which comes standard on most models.
  • The dedicated function keys (so you don't have to memorize codes) give you more ease of use, even with an IP Server 900's enhanced capabilities.
Easy to choose; easy to use

The IP Server 900 is an easy choice over other business communications systems. Its ease of use and feature-richness reduce staff frustrations, increase productivity, and enhance your corporate image. And its unique integration provides call-processing efficiency and cost savings that previously were impossible.

Please note, the IP 900 Server is not yet generally available. For more information, please contact your CCC Technologies' Representative.

Unified Threat Management

One thing that has become clear with modern cloud and data center technologies is the need for a different approach to security. An organization cannot rely on traditional infrastructure products to provide the level of security needed in the cloud or data center.

Virtualization technology that forms the foundation of clouds and data centers requires special security safeguards to protect the data flowing through virtual machines.

9 Ways to Sell Your IT Outsourcing Plan to the CFO
By Stephanie Overby - December 4, 2012 - CIO.com
Managed ServicesCFOs are becoming increasingly involved in corporate IT outsourcing decisions. However, the CIO team doesn't always speak the same language as the CFO team. Here are nine steps you can take to more successfully bring your outsourcing case to finance.

CFOs and the increasingly powerful procurement offices they oversee are getting more heavily involved in corporate IT outsourcing decisions. But the finance team's priority--cost containment--can be at odds with the IT organization's goals for IT services such as innovation and access to talent.

"The challenge is that the CIO team often doesn't speak the same language as the CFO team," says Daniel Masur, a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of law firm Mayer Brown. "They don't speak in the same terms. They don't use the same concepts. And, as a result, they just talk past each other."
