 Santa Makes a Special Visit to Diamond Children's
Santa Claus made a very special visit to Diamond Children's on Tuesday, Dec. 17. He arrived to Diamond Children's by horse carriage, entered the hospital on a red carpet and was greeted by throngs of excited patients, parents and staff. While in the lobby, Santa hugged and visited with everyone there, assessing whether they had been "naughty" or "nice" throughout the year. "I was delighted that everyone at Diamond Children's was deemed 'nice'," said Santa, with a wink.

Zay's Back in the Hospital - But This Time to Help Other Kids
Azaylia Perez spent four Christmases in the hospital, battling leukemia.This year she's back on the sixth floor of Diamond Children's--but by choice. Rather than fighting for her life, she's fulfilling a life's dream. "The kids have to spend Christmas in the hospital, so I want to get them presents," says Zay, 9. "Some of them don't get much." UA Club Works to Spread 'Christmas Joy' to Child Patients at UAMC
A UA honors society is ensuring that sick children at the University of Arizona Medical Center have something to look forward to this holiday season. Angel Charity Awards Steele Center $537K for Pediatric Cancer Clinical Trials Expansion
The Steele Center received $537,230 from Angel Charity at their annual gala held on Dec. 15. Funds will support increasing the number of clinical trials, through the Children's Oncology Group. This will give local kids access to all protocols available nationally, and will expand the basic cancer research at the Steele Center to increase the development of new future treatments.  A Passionate Heart for International Education and Collaboration
UA pediatric intensive care specialist Dr. Marc Berg vividly exemplifies the Department of Pediatrics' mission "to teach, to heal, to discover." As a professor, Berg is an award-winning educator. "Dr. Berg is an amazing teacher," said Holly Pariury, a second-year pediatrics resident. "Not only is he a role model for efficiency and problem solving, but he understands that in order to become a leader and strong physician, you need the autonomy to try. He is a great guide and adviser when needed, and knows how to push us to make us better pediatricians." Read article

 Steele Center and Diamond Children's Chosen as Bashas' Charity for December
Bashas' has chosen the Steele Center and Diamond Children's as its charity for the month of December.Throughout December, shoppers can purchase paper pin-ups for $1 or donate an open amount donation at each of the Bashas' and Food City grocery stores across Southern Arizona. Read more

 Third Annual 'Kids of Steele' Golf Tournament Raises Funds for Steele Center
Kids of Steele raised $36,000 for the Steele Center at its Third Annual Miniature Golf Tournament, held Nov. 3 at Golf N' Stuff. More than 300 individuals-children and adults- participated in the family-friendly event. In addition, Kids of Steele invited many patients currently being treated by Steele Center physicians to participate in the golf tournament for free. Read more | View photos |

Dr. Wayne Morgan Receives the 'Richard C. Talamo Distinguished Clinical Achievement Award' from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Wayne Morgan, MD,UA professor of pediatrics and physiology, received the prestigious Richard C. Talamo Distinguished Clinical Achievement Award at the 27th Annual North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference Oct. 17 in Salt Lake City. The award is given to individuals who have spent their careers in the research and care of patients with cystic fibrosis and whose contributions have had significant influence on the course of the disease.

 Steele Center Receives Donation from Phoenix Suns Charities
The Steele Center was one of 88 charities throughout Arizona to receive a donation from the Phoenix Suns Charities. The Steele Center received $3,500 to support its PANDA Children's Autoimmune Disorders Project. Read more

 Dr. Michael Seckeler Receives Prestigious 'Young Investigator Award' from American Heart Association
Michael Seckeler, MD, MSc, UA assistant professor of cardiology in the Department of Pediatrics, has been awarded the "Council on Cardiovascular Disease in the Young, Early Career Investigator Award" by the American Heart Association (AHA). The Council on Cardiovascular Disease in the Young (CVDY) Early Investigator Award recognizes early career investigators who are performing high-quality research in the field of pediatric cardiovascular disease. Cindy McCain, Mike Fourtner of 'Deadliest Catch' Visit Diamond Children's and the Steele Center
Cindy McCain, wife of U.S. Sen. John McCain, joined Mike Fourtner, star of Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch," for a tour of The University of Arizona Medical Center - Diamond Children's and the Steele Center. After learning about UAMC's state-of-the-art facilities and research labs, McCain and Fourtner visited with patients and family members and had the opportunity to participate in some "Deadliest Catch" themed games.  Kisses and Cuddles, Dr. Otis Prescribes Puppy Love to Patients at Diamond Children's
For the last two years Dr. Otis, a 4-year-old Goldendoodle has visited patients at Diamond Children's. Armed with his own scrubs, a stethoscope and lots of love, Dr. Otis is a certified therapy dog who travels from room to room bringing his special breed of calmness and cheer to patients, family members and medial staff. |
 Steele Center Receives Donation from Rincon Optimist Club of Tucson
The Steele Center received $2,000 from the Rincon Optimist Club, and an additional matching donation of $1,000 from Optimist International for a total donation of $3,000. The funds will be used for the Steele Center's pediatric cancer research program. Read more |
