Indiana Jones Meets the Da Vinci Code: The Amazing Story of the Cairo Genizah led by Rabbi Glickman

Thursday, November 6th from 7-8:30pm
North Building Upper Level Classrooms

In 1896, Rabbi Solomon Schechter of Cambridge University stepped into the attic of the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Cairo, Egypt and found the largest treasure trove of medieval and early manuscripts ever discovered. R. Schechter had entered into the synagogue's genizah-its repository for damaged and destroyed Jewish texts-which held nearly 300,000 documents, many over 1,000 years old. Considered among the most important discoveries in modern religious history, its contents contained early copies of some of the Dead Sea Scrolls, early manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible, and other sacred literature.

Our own Rabbi Glickman has written a book about this exciting find - the history of the Genizah, the story of its discovery, the story of its amazing contents. As part of his research, he and his teenage sons became two of the first outside visitors to the Genizah chamber in Cairo in almost a century. Come see Rabbi Glickman's acclaimed multimedia presentation about the Cairo Genizah to learn more about this fascinating story.

Make Thanksgiving Special for Someone Less Fortunate

Two Ways to Help
1.) Frozen Turkey Collection: November 3-17
2.) Let's Bag Hunger: November 16-26

As we approach Thanksgiving, many of us are looking forward to a festive gathering and a great meal. Not everyone in our community is fortunate to be celebrating like that. We hope you can join us in helping others.

November 3 - 17

*Bring a frozen turkey to Har HaShem's lobby freezer by Monday, November 17th. All donated turkeys will go to Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA).

November 16 - 26

* Volunteer to be a greeter at a grocery store for 2 hours. Along with 1 or 2 other people, this can bring in an additional 200-300 pounds of donated food, (feeding a family of 4 for almost a month!)*

* Donate a bag of food at your favorite grocery store - look for signs.*

* Pick up donations at grocery stores using your own large vehicle and bring them to the Louisville warehouse.*

* Sort donated food at the Louisville warehouse along with other volunteers on Sunday, November 23rd afternoon. Must be at least 12 years old.*

*For these activities, please contact our coordinator, Nancy Cohen at 303 444-5610 or [email protected] with questions or to volunteer.

Save the Date - Annual Women of Har HaShem Retreat

March 13-15, 2015

Women of Har HaShem will be holding a Women's Retreat at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, during the weekend of March 13-15, 2015 (Friday evening through Sunday morning). It is a fantastic way to make new friends and feel a part of our congregation.  This retreat is only held every 2-3 years, so put it on your calendar now!  More details will follow as we get closer to the date.

The mission of Women of Har HaShem is to create community among all women in the congregation through educational and spiritual activities, social activities, holiday celebrations for women, and social service activities.  We also support Congregation Har HaShem through volunteer activities and fundraising.

All female members of Har HaShem are automatically members of WHHS. Many of our members send a yearly donation of $18 to help us fund our programs, which is very much appreciated.  Donations may be sent to our treasurer Alice Gansfield, 4394 Apple Ct., Boulder, CO 80301.

Har Nevo, Har HaShem's Legacy Society

Leaving a contribution to Har HaShem in your will is a wonderful way to help ensure its future for years to come without any impact to your current annual giving. We hope to build our endowment fund over time so that annual returns can be used to continue to serve our community for generations to come. This would provide a cushion of safety to smooth over any yearly fluctuations in resources due to emergencies, the economy or other adverse events.

Many families have already "signed up" to do this via their wills or retirement accounts.

"HHS provided a home and added foundation to help instill a sense of Judaism and Jewish heritage in our children, and helped us grow in our own Jewishness.  We hope HHS will be around in the future so other individuals and families can similarly grow." - Dianne Glenn and David Price
Many of you have already included Har HaShem in your Estate Plan, and if you have - please contact Jane Stein at 303-247-0481, so that we may thank you and confirm that your wishes are documented. If you have any questions or want to know more, please contact Gary Fifer at [email protected] or Jane at [email protected].
