NEW POST! Rose Community Foundation "Live On: Build Your Jewish Legacy initiative" Comes to HHS

Legacy Giving offers donors a way to protect the organizations and communities they love, while making a profound impact on future generations through a gift that will keep on giving in perpetuity.

Leaving a contribution to Har HaShem in your will is a wonderful way to help ensure its future for years  to come without any impact to your current annual giving. HHS has been selected by the Rose Community Foundation to participate in their Live On: Build Your Jewish Legacy Initiative - a grant that will help educate our community with training and informational materials about Legacy Giving. Our goal is to create an "endowment" where the principal remains untouched but annual returns are used yearly to continue to serve our community. This would provide a cushion of safety to smooth over any yearly fluctuations in resources due to emergencies, the economy or other adverse events.

Many of you have already included Har HaShem in your Estate Plan, and if you have, please contact Jane Stein, so that we may thank you and confirm that your wishes are documented. We will begin to launch this exciting campaign soon, but if you have any questions or concerns, contact Jane at [email protected] or 303-247-0481 or Gary Fifer at [email protected] or 303-499-7077.

Friday Evening Shabbat Service

Second Shabbat
Friday Evening Shabbat Service Led by Rabbi Rose
March 7th
7 PM
North Building Sanctuary

At this service, Rabbi Rose will lead an engaging and participatory musical service. It is a Kabbalat Shabbat service, a term that means "Welcoming Shabbat" and refers to the beautiful Psalms and mystical poems compiled over centuries of Jewish history and inserted into the prayer book on Friday evening to prepare us for Shabbat. The evocative, easy-to-learn melodies and prayers will help you shift your heart and soul from "Monday through Friday" mode to "Shabbat" mode and leave you rejuvenated and buzzing with positive Shabbat energy.

"The House at Tyneford" by Natasha Solomons
  Sunday, March 9th, 1 - 3 PM
At Nancy Cohen's Home in Boulder

A WWII story of two well-to-do families, one English and one Austrian Jewish. It  is no longer safe to be a Jew in Vienna in 1938, so 19 year old Elise Landau is  forced to leave her glittering life of parties and champagne to become a parlor  maid in England. She arrives at Tyneford, the great house where the Rivers have  been the squires for 100's of years, and tries to make the best of a poor  situation. Her sister has married and made it to CA, and they are both waiting for  their parents' visas to arrive, the plan being her parents will go to NY. Although the Jewish factor is certainly a big part of the story, the book is less about the rise of the Nazis, WWII, and anti-semitism, and more about the universal themes of adapting to a foreign country, missing family and country, and finding love. And the growing changes in Elise, as the world changes around her, are very engrossing. It is a wonderful portrayal of a world that was waning even as WWII was beginning, and some beautiful descriptions of the bay, the cliffs, and caves. It is probably not "great literature", but I think you will find much to think about and discuss as a result of reading this book.

Afterlife and the Renewal of Jewish Death Rituals with Reb Simcha  Raphael. PH.D.

 Sunday, March 9th

 7:30 PM

Congregation Nevei Kodesh, 1925 Glenwood Drive, Boulder.

In honor of Boulder Chevra Kadisha and sponsored by Congregations  Nevei Kodesh, Bonai Shalom and Har Hashem. Cost is $10 per person.

Judaism has extensive teachings on the afterlife and the postmortem journey of  the soul. In this evening of learning, we shall explore how these teachings can  help us see the "soul-guiding"dimension to traditional Jewish rituals of death, dying, mourning and memorialization.

Reb Simcha Raphael is Founding Director of the DA'AT Institute for Death Awareness, Advocacy and Training. He teaches Jewish Mysticism at Temple University and works as a transpersonal psychotherapist and spiritual director. Ordained by Reb Zalman as a Rabbinic Pastor, he is author of Jewish Views of the Aferlife.

This year, Purim is going to be powerful. It is literally a mitzvah to be happy on  Purim. We celebrate, we eat, we drink, we give and receive gifts called  mishloach manot.

Join us for the Megillah Reading on March 15th at 6 pm. Come in costume, have a drink on us, and hear the whole Megillah, as they say. Then at 7:30 pm is the legendary adults-only Purim Shpiel in the south building. It's wild, goofy, sing-along craziness (slightly embarrassing and occasionally inappropriate.

It's also a mitzvah to give to those in need so please take a moment to bring a non-perishable/canned item to Har HaShem and we will donate it.

Shabbat Service Greeters Needed in 2014

Greeters are needed every Shabbat - 52 Friday  evenings a year. Greeters  welcome guests at  the front door of the building and at the  sanctuary door. A  smile, friendly attitude, and a willingness to show up 15 minutes before the  service starts and stay through the Oneg are all it takes to help in this significant way as we welcome members and guests.

Won't you commit now to at least one Friday a year? Do it for a loved one's yahrzeit, do it to commemorate a birthday or special occasion, do it to support a friend's b'nai mitzvah. Just do it because it's the right thing to do.

We're using the online scheduling website, VolunteerSpot, to schedule the
Shabbat Greeter Program for the entire year in advance. Click this link to go to our invitation page at http://vols.pt/7xTnUU - then enter your email address and choose your date(s) in 2014.

We thank you for your consideration as you choose to honor the mitzvah to welcome others into our synagogue!

HHS Homeless Shelter Needs Food for Guests

Breakfast bars, energy bars, and granola bars are needed for HHS BOHO guests  EVERY WEEK. We have not had enough to be able to give one to each of our  guests (125+ each Tuesday!) for a few weeks, and really need a steady supply.  If folks could drop off a box or bag whenever visiting the North Building, perhaps when attending services or dropping kids off at religious school, it will make a huge difference for our very needy and hungry guests.
