REVISED POST! Har HaShem Presents as Part of the Ten Jews Walk Into a Bar Series: A Compromising Evening

RabbiRosecrop

Har HaShem Presents as Part of the

Ten Jews Walk Into a Bar Series:

  A Compromising Evening

  Thursday, November 14th

   7:30 - 9 PM

  $10 Per Person

  Barrel Room of Avery Brewing
5763 Arapahoe Ave. Unit E, Boulder

In our current political environment outrage is all the rage. Compromise seems a dirty word. In our professional lives, personal relationships and in political life we often find ourselves paralyzed by our inability to see eye to eye with the other. Whether it's an ongoing argument with a spouse or enraged congressmen lobbing rhetorical stones at one another, we constantly look for the boundary between principle and compromise. When is compromise needed and when does the search for it compromise our integrity? From "splitting the baby" to Talmudic arguments about preserving cherished values, Judaism has a lot to offer on the topic.

We'll explore the problems and promise of compromise, have a (lively) discussion about where it fits into political discourse, and learn a bit about what Judaism has to say on the topic. Those who wish can drink a little of Avery's uncompromisingly good beer and eat a little food.

$10 per person gets you all the beer you would like. RSVP online HERE.

LAST CHANCE! New Chavurahs Forming This Week

JewishStarFingers  New Chavurahs Forming This Week

Judaism teaches that life's true meaning  and purpose is found in relationship  to other people. One of the purposes of Har  HaShem is to foster Jewish community among our members.

Many members at Har HaShem seek a more intimate connection with the synagogue community than attendance at services or religious school can provide. A chavurah enables people to find connections with others like them, to learn about and celebrate Jewish life together, to connect with people who can support us, and even challenge us.

In order to help bring members together to form new chavurot, we need you to start the process by contacting Ellen Kowitt at [email protected] with your interest by November 18th. Note date has been extended.

NEW POST!
Jerry Kaye, Director of OSRUI is Coming to Visit!

OSRUI Logo
Jerry Kaye, Director of OSRUI is Coming to Visit!
 November 17, 2013

Jerry Kaye, the director of OSRUI, our regional URJ summer camp, will  be out visiting Har HaShem on Sunday, November, 17, to share more  about the camp experience and answer any questions you might have. He will be speaking with the 1st-2nd grade families during the 9:00-9:30 service time slot and older students from 10:30-11:00. Parents of 3rd-7th grade students are welcome to join us during the 10:30 session. Visit OSRUI's website to find out more about the great experience your child can have there. Both Rabbi Ruth E. Gelfarb and Katherine Schwartz have served on faculty at OSRUI and are also able to answer any questions you might have before Jerry's visit. To get a taste of camp, you may also view the camp video.

REVISED POST! Come and Work to Help Us Rebuild

 Flood Recovery Next Steps:
Come and Work to Help Us Rebuild
 November 17th
 11:00 - 4:00
 Ages 16 and up

We have been hard at work with contractors to replace and restore heating and cooling equipment and electrical components affected by the flooding. For the next three Sundays, November 3, 10, and 17, we are hoping that members will help us hang drywall and install ceiling tiles in the damaged areas. The drywall will be precut into pieces that can be easily lifted. No previous experience is needed, we will have skilled supervision available to guide you. Here are the details:

Please sign up to help at HELP US REBUILD.

If you have cordless electric drills / screwdrivers, please bring them. We have the appropriate drywall screwdriver tips.

The flood has created both financial and emotional trauma for our community. In addition to reaching out to Har HaShem for assistance, please consult these Community Resources compiled by our wonderful Jewish community partners at the Boulder JCC.

Thank you to the many members, non-members and organizations who have reached out to support us. We feel blessed to have the support of so many people.

REVISED POST! Volunteers Needed for Food Drive Nov. 17-27

volunteers

Volunteers Needed For Food Drive Nov. 17-27

This is Community Food Share's largest annual food drive. There are several different ways in which you can help feed the needy in our community.

1) Be a greeter at the grocery store to remind shoppers to donate extra food.  This is something you can do alone, or with your family, or with a friend.  Participating grocery stores are King Soopers, Lucky's, and Niwot Market in Boulder, Niwot, Gunbarrel, Louisville, and Lafayette.  Time slots are 9:00-11:30 AM, 11:30-2:00, 2:00-4:30, and 4:30-7:00 PM. Weekends and evenings are the most important, but anytime you are available is good.

2) Har HaShem sorting crew on Sunday Nov. 24, 12:00-3:00.  Children must be at least 10 years old. This is at their new warehouse in Louisville, 650 S. Taylor Ave.

3) Drive a large vehicle to pick up the grocery store donations and deliver to the CFS warehouse.
Please consider volunteering and let either Nancy Cohen (from HHS) [email protected] or Sue Ericson (from CFS) 303-652-3663 X202 know.
It's Frozen
Turkey Collection Time at Har HaShem

It's Frozen Turkey Collection Time at Har HaShem

Make Thanksgiving Special and Donate a Frozen Turkey

 Through Nov. 18th
 Freezer in North Building Lobby

As we approach Thanksgiving, many of us are looking forward to a festive gathering and a great meal. Not everyone in our community is fortunate to be celebrating like that.

In 2006, a Har HaShem student created a mitzvah project to collect turkeys to donate to a food bank as part of his Bar Mitzvah. This small personal effort has grown over the years and inspired Har HaShem to continue the tradition.

Help make a difference for less fortunate people by bringing a frozen turkey to the synagogue lobby freezer by Monday, November 18th. All turkeys donated will go to Emergency Family Assistance Association (EFAA).  King Soopers has frozen turkeys for 59 cents a pound if you have a King Soopers Card.

If you would prefer to donate via credit card, DONATE HERE and we will forward the money to EFAA. A donation of $18 is suggested, but any amount is welcome. Thank you.

A smile, friendly attitude, and willingness to show up 15 minutes early are all it takes to help in this significant way as we welcome members and guests. Won't you commit to at least one Friday a year? Do it for a loved one's yahrzeit, do it to commemorate a birthday or special occasion, do it to support a friend's b'nai mitzvah. Just do it!
