Second Shabbat

Friday Evening Shabbat Service Led by  Rabbi Ruth E. Gelfarb

 Friday, August 30th

 Services at 6 PM

Join us in welcoming Rabbi Gelfarb to one of several part time roles she will fill at Har HaShem. Once a month, Rabbi Gelfarb and Cantorial Soloist Holli Berman will lead an engaging and participatory musical service. It is a Kabbalat Shabbat service, a term that means "Welcoming Shabbat" and refers to the beautiful psalms and mystical poems compiled over centuries of Jewish history and inserted into the prayer book on Friday evening to prepare us for Shabbat. The evocative, easy-to-learn melodies and prayers will help you shift your heart and soul from "Monday through Friday" mode to Shabbat mode and leave you rejuvenated and buzzing with positive Shabbat energy.

Selichot Service and Dinner

selichot

 Selichot Service and Dinner

 Saturday, August 31st
 7 PM
 North Building
Reservations for the meal have closed.

What does it mean to forgive? How do we forgive, and let go of pain and resentment that might otherwise last a lifetime? We will watch The  Power of Forgiveness, a documentary exploring political, personal and  spiritual dimensions of forgiveness through the stories of teachers such  as Elie Wiesel, Thich Nhat Hanh, and many others. The film takes us to  Ground Zero, to Beirut, to Northern Island, among other locations, to  explore the difficulty and promise of forgiveness.

We watch this movie on the night of Selichot, a word that means "forgiveness" as we focus in on our spiritual-emotional preparation for the High Holy Days. We will reflect on the teachings of the film and then study Jewish texts on the topic of forgiveness and finish the evening with a Selichot service in the sanctuary.

We will also continue the Har HaShem tradition of beginning with a casual meal together, and then watch the film while we eat.

Reservations for the meal have closed.

More information on the film at thepowerofforgiveness.com/.

Free Parent Support Group for Jewish Parents of Children or Adults with  Disabilities

     To Start September 9th

A parent support group is forming for the Boulder Jewish community. It will have  eight parents of older children/adult children with significant disabilities, led by  Cathy J. Cohn, PhD, LCSW, a clinical social worker and psychologist in private practice in Boulder. The group  will meet eight times on Monday nights from 7-8:30 PM, twice monthly, beginning on Monday, Sept. 9 through December 16, 2013.

Participation is free of charge, thanks to support from a Limmud Colorado-Inspired Jewish Learning Grant from Rose Community Foundation and by Congregation Har HaShem, and Dr. Cathy Cohn.

    Program Requirements:

    1. Participants must be able to attend all eight sessions.
    2. Participants must be parents of an adult child or of a child 10 years old or older who has a significant disability (could be mental illness), so that their child/adult child requires extra support. If the group does not fill, parents of younger children will be considered.
