  Problems with Amy Levine

  Sunday, August 18th

  2:30-4 PM

  North Building
  No Charge

Local author Amy Levine will discuss topics from her new books, The Funeral is Just the Beginning: Everything You Need to Do When a Loved One Dies and "Just in Case: A Record of Vital Information in the Event of Emergency, Natural Disaster, Prolonged Illness, or Death."

Topics include Your Rights at a Funeral Home; Funeral Etiquette; Mandatory Death Notifications; Grief Support; If There is No Will; Probate Overview; What to Bring to a Lawyer; Filing Taxes; Claiming Military Benefits; Cleaning Out a Residence; and more.

Inspired by her family's challenging experience after the loss of her sister who died suddenly at a young age, unexpectedly, without a will, and all the way across the country in a city they had never been to, Amy guides researchers through the process of finalizing a loved one's affairs, creating a will, listing assets, outlining which possessions should go to whom, and ultimately, helping to make life a little easier for grieving families.

Adults of any age should attend this session for an overview of what's involved or as you pre-plan. Avoid the common misconceptions, mistakes and problems that surface after the loss of a loved one.

Selichot Service and Dinner

selichot

 Selichot Service and Dinner

 Saturday, August 31st
 7 PM
 North Building

What does it mean to forgive? How do we forgive, and let go of pain and resentment that might otherwise last a lifetime? We will watch The  Power of Forgiveness, a documentary exploring political, personal and  spiritual dimensions of forgiveness through the stories of teachers such  as Elie Wiesel, Thich Nhat Hanh, and many others. The film takes us to  Ground Zero, to Beirut, to Northern Island, among other locations, to  explore the difficulty and promise of forgiveness.

We watch this movie on the night of Selichot, a word that means "forgiveness" as we focus in on our spiritual-emotional preparation for the High Holy Days. We will reflect on the teachings of the film and then study Jewish texts on the topic of forgiveness and finish the evening with a Selichot service in the sanctuary.

We will also continue the Har HaShem tradition of beginning with a casual meal together, and then watch the film while we eat.

The meal requires an online RSVP at https://harhashem.wufoo.com/forms/selichot-dinner-august-31-2013/. Dinner is $14 per person.

More information on the film at thepowerofforgiveness.com/.
