Caroline Saliman Wins Grinspoon-Steinhardt  Award for Jewish Educators

Mazel Tov to Har HaShem educator Caroline  Saliman on being named the 2013 Grinspoon-  Steinhardt winner. Designed to recognize, this  award honors and supports outstanding Jewish educators worthy of national recognition.

Caroline blesses Har HaShem with her work as a youth group advisor, camp director, b'nai mitzvah tutor, Purim playwright, Mini Menshes facilitator, Torah chanter and essential partner in crafting and developing a love for Jewish learning for this community. She connects with her students and their parents with her deep knowledge, genuine concern, and unique ability to make Jewish learning joyous. Congregants of all ages adore her; young children run to hug her, and parents reserve a spot years in advance to tutor their child for b'nai mitzvah. Caroline embodies the excellence that marks a Grinsppon-Steinhardt Award winner.

Past winners include Rabbi Hanah Laner, Leah Boonin, Yehudis Fishman.

 Shabbat Va'etchanan

 July 19th

 6 PM

 North Building Sanctuary

At this service, Rabbi Josh Rose and Cantorial Soloist Holli Berman will lead an engaging and  participatory musical service. It is a Kabbalat Shabbat service, a term that means "Welcoming Shabbat" and refers to the beautiful psalms and mystical poems compiled over centuries of Jewish history and inserted into the prayer book on Friday evening to prepare us for Shabbat. The evocative, easy-to-learn melodies and prayers will help you shift your heart and soul from "Monday through Friday" mode to Shabbat mode and leave you rejuvenated and buzzing with positive Shabbat energy.

 Thursday, July 25th

Don't miss this very special event, which is co-sponsored by Har HaShem. Ernst Bloch was a twentieth century Jewish composer who wrote this beautiful work as an expression of the themes of the Shabbat morning service. Powerful, profound, beautiful and exciting, the work is unlike anything else in 20th century orchestral music. From the CMF website, "The work is over an hour long and is more or less the weekly morning Shabbat synagogue service performed as an operatic work. Scored for solo baritone, chorus, and orchestra, the mixed chorale of men and women's voices rise and fall with mood of the different prayers. At points it is very quiet and then culminates into a blast of music, such as the Shema Yisroel passage. Towards the end, there is an English reading of part of the Torah service. The rest of the Sacred Service is in Hebrew."

The Sacred Service will be preceded by a performance of Dvorak's beautiful Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104.

The discount code can be accessed online at www.comusic.org or at the box office, M-F 1-6 pm. Call (303) 440-7666 and provide pass code HARHASHEM.

This special discount code can also be used on 8/4 for Schreker's Chamber Symphony, performed with three short works by Beethoven and a Mozart violin concerto featuring our concertmaster, Calin Lupanu. This concert includes a free talk under the tent from 6:30 to 7 pm.

CMF offers a free shuttle up to the park. The shuttle runs a loop up Baseline hill, beginning at the 27th Way Park and Ride at Broadway and 27th Way. Parking is also available at New Vista High School on Baseline, one block west of Broadway. Shuttles begin running at 5:30 and continue until 7:30, and reverse the process after each performance.

  Sunday, August 18th

Local author Amy Levine will discuss topics from her new books, The Funeral is Just the Beginning: Everything You Need to Do When a Loved One Dies and "Just in Case: A Record of Vital Information in the Event of Emergency, Natural Disaster, Prolonged Illness, or Death."

Topics include Your Rights at a Funeral Home; Funeral Etiquette; Mandatory Death Notifications; Grief Support; If There is No Will; Probate Overview; What to Bring to a Lawyer; Filing Taxes; Claiming Military Benefits; Cleaning Out a Residence; and more.

Inspired by her family's challenging experience after the loss of her sister who died suddenly at a young age, unexpectedly, without a will, and all the way across the country in a city they had never been to, Amy guides researchers through the process of finalizing a loved one's affairs, creating a will, listing assets, outlining which possessions should go to whom, and ultimately, helping to make life a little easier for grieving families.

Adults of any age should attend this session for an overview of what's involved or as you pre-plan. Avoid the common misconceptions, mistakes and problems that surface after the loss of a loved one.

 October 26th Evening Event

The Har HaShem Board of Trustees is currently recruiting volunteers to plan a  gala community-wide event honoring Rabbi Bronstein for her significant  contributions to Har HaShem and the community during her long tenure as  Senior Rabbi.

We need leaders and we need helpers, for such topics as publicity, menu,  fundraising, invitations, decorations and many elements that will all contribute to  a wonderful event for a wonderful person. If you are interested in participating in planning this effort, please email Elizabeth Freedman at [email protected] with your name, phone number and email address as soon as possible.

Please also indicate your area of interest and if you would be willing to take a leadership role in guiding others to help build a great event. We anticipate holding an initial planning meeting in late July to develop the October 26 evening event.

Welcome New Clergy and Lifelong Learning Executive Assistant Carol  Maldonado

Our financial situation has forced a consolidation from three administrative support  people to two, and a shifting of roles. Please welcome Carol Maldonado to our staff,  as the Clergy and Lifelong Learning Executive Assistant. Carol will join Paula  Young, Assistant to the Executive Director, in our North Building office. There will  not be administrative support staff in our South Building.

She did a wonderful job in that capacity and we know she will in this new position. In her new and larger role, she will support Rabbi Rose, Director of Lifelong Learning Katherine Schwartz, and Cantorial Soloist Holli Berman.

Additional details about our administrative support staff reorganization and reduced office hours will be shared shortly. In the interim, if you encounter Carol in person or by phone please introduce yourself and welcome her. Carol can be reached at [email protected] and (303) 499-7077 Ext. 13.

BE A FRIDAY EVENING SHABBAT SERVICE GREETER AT THE SYNAGOGUE! 52 Friday evenings a year, Har HaShem holds an evening Shabbat service starting at 6 PM (except on the first Friday of each month when it begins at 7 PM). Greeters are needed to welcome guests at the front door and at the sanctuary door. A smile, friendly attitude, and willingness to show up 15 minutes early are all it takes to help in this significant way as we welcome members and guests. Won't you commit to at least one Friday a year? Do it for a loved one's yahrzeit, do it to commemorate a birthday or special occasion, do it to support a friend's b'nai mitzvah. Just do it!
