Spotlight on Canada
Species Nutrition Canada Species would like to congratulate Canadian President and Athlete, John Mutton for his 3rd place finish at the Ontario Championships and wish him luck at the Canadian Nationals and the North American Championships. FRUCTOSE...WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!
Like most bodybuilders, you probably reach for a fast acting source of energy before a workout BUT before you reach for that banana there are a few things you need to know about FRUCTOSE that may lead you to changing your pre-workout carb source forever!

SPECIES NUTRITION NEWSFLASH...FISH AND MERCURY...WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Seafood is a key source of heart healthy protein and it is recommended that everyone should aim for at least two servings of fish per week. However, there has been a lot of concern recently about mercury levels in certain fish. So what fish should you eat and what fish should you avoid?
Well it is advised that you avoid large predatory fish as they have the highest mercury levels. This includes shark, swordfish and king mackerel. Low mercury species include anchovies, atlantic mackerel, wild alaskan salmon, catfish, freshwater rainbow trout, oysters, shrimp, pollack, sardines and canned light tuna (which has lower levels than albacore tuna).
FARMED OR WILD FISH?
Farmed fish tend to be lower in mercury because they are fed a controlled diet. However, farmed carnivorous species such as salmon are fattened with large amounts of wild caught fish which may contain carcinogens that pose neurological risks.
At the end of the day though, if you have the choice stick to wild varieties of fish as they have a more varied diet.
AND WHAT ABOUT SUSHI?
With the rising popularity of sushi it is good to know what to eat and what to avoid if you are watching your mercury intake.
Salmon(sake), shrimp(ebi) and tuna(maguro) all tend to be high in mercury. Better choices are atlantic mackerel(saba), farmed clams, oysters, squid(ika) and crab(kani). |

If you are dieting for a contest or simply watching your waistline, it may be wise to choose your dinner companions carefully!
According to new research what a person chooses to eat at lunch or dinner is influenced by the gender make-up of the group.
Women who dine with a male companion tend to choose foods of significantly lower calorie values than women who eat with women. In mixed gender groups women's food choices remained at the lower end of the calorie scale. The more men in the group the fewer calories the women consumed. Women in all-female groups ate significantly more calories.
It is thought that women perceive smaller/healthier portions as being more feminine and believe that by eating smaller portions they will be considered more attractive to men.
Interestingly enough, when it comes to food selections made by men, gender of whom they are eating with does not play any part in their food selection.

BASIC PROTEIN PANCAKE MIXTURE...
1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup egg whites
1/4 cup fat free cottage cheese(optional, but makes them great if you eat dairy)
Isolyze Whey Protein Powder (optional)
Stevia or Spenda to taste
tsp baking powder
Blend together and cook in a pan like a pancake. For best results blend together in a blender or magic bullet, but can also be stirred by hand.
This is the base of a protein pancake. Get creative with flavors! They are awesome with fruit, pumpkin, cinnamon, peanut butter, bananas...basically anything you can imagine!
These are amazing topped with things such as sugar free syrup, nut buttters, sugar free jelly, fruit and 'frosting'. For the frosting, simply take a scoop of protein and mix it with a little water to make a thick but spreadable consistency.
