OUR SPECIES ATHLETE OF THE MONTH IS...

 JUAN "DIESEL" MOREL
 
Currently training for the Jr Nationals in Chicago (June 18th-June20th), Juan "Diesel" Morel began his relationship with SPECIES back in 2007. Since then he has utilized all our supplements in his diet and, along with nutritional guidance from Dave Palumbo.  He has managed to overcome a major obstacle many bodybuilders are all too familiar with. You see Juan is a member of the 'hard gainers club' (tough to believe when you look at him now!). His metabolism is so fast that his off season diet requires him to eat 12 meals a day!
 
Here is a look at a day in the 'off-season' life of Juan Diesel...
 
MEAL 1: 5 whole eggs with 1 cup of oatmeal (pre-cooked measurement).
 
MEAL 2: 5 whole eggs, 1 cup rice.
 
MEAL 3: (pre-workout)  54g ISOLYZE , 40g CARBOLYZE and 1 tablespoon Macadamia Nut Oil.
 
MEAL 4: (post-workout) 54g ISOLYZE with 50g CARBOLYZE.
 
MEAL 5: 8oz cooked chicken or turkey with 1/2 cup cashew nuts (or almonds/ walnuts) with 1 cup(cooked measurement) rice.
 
MEAL 6: 8oz (cooked) chicken or red meat, salad with 2tbs Mac Nut Oil and vinegar, baked potato and yam or white rice.
 
MEAL 7: As meal 5.
 
MEAL 8: 8oz turkey burgers with cheese and 2 buns with 1/2 cup almonds.
 
MEAL 9: Same as meal 6.
 
MEAL 10: 5 whole eggs with cheese and grits.
 
MEAL 11: 25g ISOLYZE with 8oz milk, 2 tbs peanut butter.
 
MEAL 12: Same as meal 11.
 
Whew! So next time you complain about being a hard gainer, just take a look at Juan's diet - any obstacle can be overcome with dedication, willpower, and of course, SPECIES supplements!
 
Finally, we had to ask Juan what he felt  was the greatest lesson he had learned on his journey through bodybuilding and he said:
 
"One thing that I have learned concerns training for a show. You have to continue to train hard, don't change your training just because it's pre-contest. Keep it heavy all the way! Go to the gym for 45 minutes to an hour and then get out.
 
Sometimes we think more is better, but it's not! All it leads to is flatter muscles on stage."
 
Wise words Juan! After all, muscle is built with heavy weights, why on earth would you try to maintain it with light weights and high reps??!

Training on Empty ?
Don't do it!
 
It used to be thought that by training on an empty stomach you would accelerate the fat burning process...the theory being that with no available fuel source your body would have no option other than to pull energy from fat stores. Now, whilst training on empty may have some benefits when it comes to low intensity cardio, it is NOT a good idea when it comes to your muscle building workouts.
 
When you weight train on an empty stomach you are at high risk of actually LOSING muscle tissue as it is catabolized for fuel in the absence of food. On the other hand, if you have a small snack 30-60 minutes prior to training you actually increase muscle protein synthesis in the recovery stage.
 
SPECIES RECOMMENDS:
For the greatest results from your training consume the following muscle building shake 30-60mins before your workout...

 GLUTATHIONE...THE WHEY CONNECTION
 
Glutathione is what is known as a tripeptide composed of the amino acids Cysteine, Glutamic Acid and Glycine. It is found in all cells of the body but resides predominantly in the lungs, intestinal tract and  liver. In the liver glutathione assists in the detoxification of harmful compounds, allowing them to be eliminated in the bile. When glutathione levels are low liver and lymphatic functions suffer, allowing toxins to circulate throughout the body, which ultimately leads to damage in individual cells and organs. It is interesting to note that glutathione is so powerful when it comes to detoxifying drugs that doctors routinely use glutathione promoting drugs in the treatment of patients with certain types of drug overdose. Another point of interest is that the herb milk thistle, which is often used as a liver protector, exerts its effect by modestly increasing glutathione levels.

NATURAL GROWTH HORMONE ENHANCEMENT

 As athletes we are all familiar with growth hormone..since it is never far from the news. However, the growth hormone that grabs all the attention is usually found in a bottle, what about our own natural growth hormone? Is there a way that we can optimize our ability to produce this muscle building, youth restoring hormone naturally?
Thankfully the answer is "Yes" and here are five simple steps you can take to assist this process....

Studies suggest that the intensity necessary to trigger exercise-induced growth hormone release corresponds to the lactate threshold(the exercise intensity at which lactic acid accumulates in the blood). Training above this threshold amplifies the release of growth hormone at rest and increases total secretion for at least 24 hours. 
 
So there you have it, 5 simple ways to boost your growth hormone levels without even having to touch a bottle...unless it says SOMALYZE or LIPOLYZE of course!
 
 
 
Orange Roughy Sweet Suprise
 
Ingredients:
1/2 cup of Isolyze (vanilla ice cream flavor)
2 whole eggs 
1 Tbls Mac Nut Oil
1/3 cup water
1 pinch of cinnamon
 
Directions:
Mix real good, It looks like it is really watery and thin but no worries pour it in to waffle maker  (I use a belgian waffle maker). Some have an indicator light which signals when it is ready.
 
I like to put natural peanut butter or almond butter on it then a touch of sugar free maple syrup.

It seems that monitoring your blood pressure at home with one of the many gadgets currently available is more accurate when it comes to predicting heart disease than having it measured in your doctors office. Taking your blood pressure at home eliminates "white coat hypertension", the phenomenon of elevated blood pressure caused by the stress of being in the doctors office. In addition to this, high blood pressure readings late at night have a greater association with heart disease and when was the last time you went to your doctor at midnight to have your blood pressure checked!?
 
BRAIN FITNESS TIPS 
 
Here are six things you can do to keep your brain as fit as your body:
 
1) Eat more almonds...they are reputed to have memory enhancing powers.
2) Drink apple juice....apple juice increases production of the essential neurotransmitter, acetylcholine in the brain. This in turn boosts memory and brain  function.
3) Make sure you get a good night's sleep. Long term memory is consolidated while you are asleep. This occurs when the brain replays images of the experiences of the day and stores them in the subconscious mind.
4) Keep your brain active by learning something new or doing mental exercises such as crossword puzzles.
5) Eliminate stress from your life.
6) Avoid sugar...too much sugar in your system can cause memory loss and other neurological disorders.
 
ALLERGIES AND MOODS
 
Now that allergy season is upon us, it is interesting to note that both untreated allergic conditions and allergy medications can cause mood changes. People with severe nasal allergies often complain of feeling irritable and utterly exhausted. Others describe a nervous agitation. People who have chronic hives also report mood fluctuations corresponding to outbreaks.
 
These mood altering effects are due to the fact that allergy cells produce a mix of natural chemicals that are released either gradually or all at once during various allergic conditions. Some of these chemicals (including histamines and one called TNF-alpha) are known to have mood-altering effects. We have receptors for these chemicals throughout our bodies...including our brains.
 
In addition to this, allergy medications can also affect mood in some people. For example 'Sudafed' (pseudoephedrine) can cause some people to feel anxious, while in others it causes lethargy. Many anti-histamines are known to cause drowsiness. If this be a problem for you, then it is suggested that a nasal steroid spray be used to control nasal symptoms and Ketotifen eye drops should ease itchy, watery eyes.
 
On another note entirely, anti-histamines can lead to weight gain in some individuals (as can such innocent things as heartburn medications!).
 
 
OEA FOR APPETITE CONTROL AND MEMORY ENHANCEMENT...
 
Previously it was discovered that oleic acids from fats are transformed into a compound called oleoylethanolamide(OEA) in the upper region of the small intestines. OEA in turn sends hunger curbing messages to the brain which increases feelings of fullness and reduces appetite. This is not the end of the OEA story though as this compound is also known to cause memory consolidation, in which superficial, short-term memories are turned into meaningful long-term memories. It does this by activating memory enhancing signals in the amygdala - the brain area that plays a role in retaining memories of emotional events.
