EARLY READING STRATEGIES

LPB's Early Reading Strategies in Practice

Students with Down syndrome have a remarkable capacity to master important early literacy skills at a very young age. Nobody understands this better than the Learning Program, a featured presenter at our 10th Annual Educators Forum on November 18 in Worcester

Drawing on 30 years of research by our friends at Down Syndrome Education International (the same folks who headlined the MDSC's Northeast Down Syndrome Education Conference in 2012), the Learning Program has developed evidenced-based teaching methods for children with Down syndrome.

The MDSC is fortunate to partner with the The Learning Program Boston, which uses the Learning Program's innovative model to deliver educational supports to children, parents and teachers. They are methods that have been proven to improve the overall development and academic success of children with Down syndrome.

At our 10th Annual Educators Forum, Pam Booth, a parent-educator from the Learning Program will present a session titled, "Promoting Strong Literacy Skills in Young Learners with Down Syndrome." Pam will provide an overview of the Learning Program's research-based best practices and strategies for teaching these essential skills to young children and look at what studies say about the impact that the development of early literacy skills can have on future success.

Check out the video above to see the Learning Program model in action as Evan Messina works with his teacher to develop his sight word reading skills using a methodology called "Match, Select, Name." Read below for more information about the Learning Program and other sessions that they will be involved in at our Forum.
