DR. BRIAN CHICOINE

Author, Founder, Medical Director of the Adult Down Syndrome

Center of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital

Dr. Brian Chicoine, Medical Director of Advocate Lutheran General Hospitals Adult Down Syndrome Center, right, greets patients Paul Franklin, left, and Jill Sowins, center, during the open house.

Twenty years ago, Dr. Brian Chicoine co-founded the Adult Down Syndrome Center of Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois. At that time, he was seeing patients two mornings a week. Now, it has evolved into a full-time center offering a holistic approach to meeting the medical and psychosocial needs of people with Down syndrome.

From the outset, Dr. Chicoine's commitment has been critical to the center's success. It has served more than 5,000 patients and treats 2,000 individuals per year. He remains the center's medical director and is on the faculty of Family Medicine at Lutheran General Hospital. Last March, on World Down Syndrome Awareness Day, he and his professional partner, Dr. Dennis McGuire, director of psychosocial services, were invited to address the United Nations.

At our conference, we are thrilled to have Dr. Chicoine discussing how the world for people with Down syndrome is changing and expanding. Teens and adults have greater opportunities as well as the challenges that come with them. This workshop will focus on promoting mental wellness for teens and adults with Down syndrome with a focus on understanding common characteristics of people with Down syndrome, self-promotion strategies, and avoiding pitfalls.

Dr. Chicoine graduated from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine and completed his Family Medicine residency at Lutheran General Hospital. He presents regularly at national and regional conferences, published numerous articles and co-authored two books "Mental Wellness of Adults with Down Syndrome," and "The Guide to Good Health for Teens and Adults with Down Syndrome" published by Woodbine House Press.
