FIFTH CONSECUTIVE MONTH OF GAINS IN ARCHITECTURE BILLINGS INDEX

Washington, D.C. - January 23, 2013 - Business conditions at architecture firms continue to improve. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the December ABI score was 52.0, down from the mark of 53.2 in November. This score reflects an increase in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 59.4, down slightly from the 59.6 mark of the previous month.

Even though growth in the U.S. economy continues to be disappointing, nonresidential construction activity is projected to see healthy if unspectacular gains this year, with construction spending for buildings rising by 5.0 percent in 2013 before accelerating to 7.2 percent in 2014. The construction of commercial facilities is expected to lead the upturn, with spending gains of almost 9 percent this year and nearly 11 percent next year, led by double-digit gains in hotel construction. Industrial construction spending is projected to nearly match the overall nonresidential building totals this year and next, while institutional construction activity should lag behind, with modest single-digit gains over each of the next two years. Healthcare is expected to be the strongest institutional sector.

Eskew+Dumez+Ripple is now accepting applications for 2013 / 2014 Fellowship Program

Eskew+Dumez+Ripple is announcing its second annual Research Fellowship opportunity. The focus of this year's Research Fellowship is to perform quantitative and qualitative research, documentation, and analysis related to resilience in the New Orleans region and beyond. This work will inform preparations already underway for New Orleans to host Greenbuild 2014. This year's Fellowship is relatively flexible, open to the candidate's original research question and methodology. Research Fellows are paired with EDR staff to develop and refine research goals, free to pursue these goals unfettered by day-to-day project deliverables. They are also afforded opportunities to engage and inform the design of ongoing projects when appropriate.

The goal of the EDR Fellowship is to provide meaningful and unique professional experience within a studio-based research environment. Fellows work under the guidance of the studio's leaders to produce work and document and present the results at the end of the Fellowship tenure.
