Architecture Billing Index (ABI) in Positive Territory
On the heels of a nearly three-point increase, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) climbed into positive terrain for the first time in five months. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the August ABI score was 50.2, up from the mark of 48.7 in July. This score reflects an increase in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 57.2, up from mark of 56.3 the previous month.
"Until the economy is on firmer ground, there aren't likely to be strong increases in demand for design services," said Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. "In the meantime, we can expect to see design activity alternate between modest growth and modest decline." Key August ABI highlights: Regional Averages: South 52.2, West 51.2, Northeast 45.5, Midwest 45.3 Sector Index Breakdown: multi-family residential 53.0, institutional 50.2, commercial/industrial 47.9, mixed practice 46.8 Project inquiries index: 57.2 The regional and sector categories are calculated as a 3-month moving average, whereas the index and inquiries are monthly numbers. |

NCARB Fee Relief
For the second time this year, NCARB is taking steps to provide its customers with some financial relief in these challenging economic times. From October 1-November 30, NCARB will waive all past renewal fees for any architect or intern who reactivates a lapsed NCARB Record or Certificate. Depending on how long the holder's Record or Certificate has lapsed, this could equate to significant savings. The cost to reactivate is $475 for architects, and $75 for interns; and depending on when the Record lapsed, those who reactivate could be eligible for free certification.

Nine projects by seven firms were presented awards; Holly and Smith Architects, Coleman Partners, Plus One, Lionel Bailey, Trahan Architects, Tipton Associates and Jim Sullivan. |
EVENTS & CONTINUING EDUCATION
This workshop is based on the idea that technology is a tool. It is for each architect to decide which tools to use and how to use them. The approach is not specific to any particular software, but broadly focused to enable participants to make their own informed decisions about what technologies to choose and how to implement them in their own practices. By learning to do this they will increase their effectiveness as designers of the built environment.
