2nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest

Presented by UPMC

We are proud to again offer an opportunity for regional youth to thoughtfully consider Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, his mission, and his challenge to, "develop a kind of dangerous unselfishness." The Second Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest, presented by UPMC, challenges young people to highlight a female activist, either past or present, who shares and lives out MLK's vision. By using Dr. King's birthday to highlight female activists who are changing the world, we will raise awareness around gender equality, and promote the incredible ways that women are working towards justice for all.

Students in grades 6 - 12 are encouraged to submit entries and use their creative voices to raise awareness, encourage positivity, and acknowledge women and girls who have made a lasting impact in history, or who are changing the world today.

Finalists and winners will receive cash prizes and community recognition. The DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION is Monday, January 6, 2014.

Community Cinema Screening

The State of Arizona

Join us for the second screening of the season as we view The State of Arizona. The film considers volatile themes of race and immigration, portrayed through a mosaic of characters and their responses to SB1070, Arizona's controversial, "papers please" law.  In addition to exploring local and personal reactions to the law, the film also exposes how Arizona's enforcement-led policy is reshaping the national conversation around immigration reform.  with dozens of states considering a similar approach, The State of Arizona holds a mirror and asks Americans who they are, and who they want to be.

WHEN: Thursday, December 12, 2013 - doors open at 6:00pm, screening from 6:30pm - 7:30pm and panel discussion following.

WHERE: Union Project, 801 N Negley Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15206
