Day of the Girl CELEBRATION
October 11, 2013

 

Please join us for the 2nd Annual Day of the Girl Pittsburgh Celebration!  This FREE event will feature awesome girl-serving organizations from around the region, activities for girls and their families, music, food, and so much more!  We hope you will join us for an evening of celebrating the power that girls have to change the world!

Day of the Girl Pittsburgh is part of the International Day of the Girl movement. October 11 was declared by the United Nations as International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls' rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.  DOTG Pittsburgh celebrates the power of girls and elevates the conversation around their strengths, identifies challenges and opportunities, squashes stereotypes, and works towards a solution together.

Community Cinema Screening

The Graduates

 

We are thrilled to again be partnering with WQED for this year's season of Community Cinema film screenings. Join us for the first screening of the season as we view The Graduates. An eye-opening and personal documentary, The Graduates considers the challenges facing Latino and Latina students from across the United States. The film provides insight into the personal challenges and barriers that young people are facing in order to make their dreams come true. Join for the "Girls Hour" of the film, and a panel discussion immediately afterwards featuring A+ Schools Program Director, Mayada Mansour and Duquesne University Assistant Professor of Literacy Education, Dr. Sandra Quiñones.

 

WHEN: Wednesday, October 16, 2013 - doors open at 6:00pm, screening from 6:30pm - 7:30pm and panel discussion following.

YWCA GREATER PITTSBURGH - Week Without Violence

Beginning Sunday, October 13, join the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh in recognizing a Week Without Violence, acknowledging how violence affects individuals, families, and our community as a whole. The Week Without Violence events are all presented in partnership with the FBI Pittsburgh Field Office, the FBI Pittsburgh's Citizens' Academy Alumni Association, and the US Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania.

 

Confronting Violence Against Women

Please join The YWCA, CCAC, and collaborating organizations as we gather in Foerster Student Service Center for an educational event examining the local and global impacts of human trafficking. Dr. Mary Burke will present the Keynote Address. This event is open to the public at no charge. Light refreshments served.

Eliminating Hate Crime

Learn more about violence and its impact upon communities through the world premier art exhibition ENOUGH: Artists Speak Out. Please join The YWCA and Society for Contemporary Craft for light refreshments, viewing of the exhibition, and a panel discussion by leading violence experts. This event is offered to the public at no charge.

GESTALT INSTITUTE OF CLEVELAND - When A Client Commits Suicide: Effects on the Therapist and Relational Field

Join Girls Coalition member Gina Fitzmartin, MEd, CAC, LPC and Mick Landaiche, PhD, LPC for an experiential workshop that will focus on the therapist's experience of losing a client to suicide, a subject not often talked about and often difficult to talk about. This workshop will provide a safe place to explore what happens to therapists' and counselors' work when a client commits suicide.

WOMEN FOR A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT - Hungry for Change Film Screening and Pittsburgh Environment and Health Conference

Join Women for a Healthy Environment for two great events this month.

 

Hungry for Change Screening

In honor of National Food Day, WHE will feature a documentary screening of Hungry for Change, including a panel discussion following the film. The documentary exposes shocking secrets about diet, weightloss, and secrets the food industry doesn't want you to know about - deceptive strategies designed to keep you coming back for more.

Pittsburgh Environment and Health Conference

What does protecting the environment really mean? What does this have to do with YOU? What does it mean to be green? Join WHE and others in exploring this questions and many more. The links between the environment and health don't just affect individuals, they affect the entire community. The conference will help individuals learn how to live a greener, healthier life using small changes. Includes lunch.

Zombies, puppets, a costume parade, live performances, games and more will fill Kelly STrayhorn for the 5th Annual Halloween Mahem. This day is planned to delight and entertain the whole family. Very special guest Mr. McFeely will join to sign autographs and lead the whole family in the costume parade! So much family fun, it's scary!

Global Solutions Pittsburgh in partnership with Get Involved! Inc. and Carlow University will host a cutting-edge conference for high-school and university student leaders in the Pittsburgh area. This one-day conference focuses on providing students with concrete, skills-based training on how to become active in student-centered or community-based organizations. Expert training will be provided on topics such as leadership, organizing with social media, fundraising, budgeting, and event planning.
