Dear ,

We've got the "April showers", here's hoping that those "May flowers" begin blossoming soon!  Along with new growth, warmth, and color all around, we at the Girls Coalition are looking forward to the many wonderful things that spring has to offer.  From film screenings to fundraisers to jump-roping, this month is filled with amazing opportunities to support and advocate for girl-serving organizations throughout southwestern PA.  We hope you'll join us!

Please note this is a long newsletter, but that is just because there are SO MANY great things going on in our region to support the individuals and organizations who work with girls!

Also, as always, we encourage you to like us on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter (@GirlsSWPA) and Pinterest to stay up-to-date on the latest articles, words of inspiration, local events, and global issues concerning girls, young women and gender equity.

This year, presentations will focus on three key areas:

  • Successful girl-led initiatives
  • Solution-based programming tools and models
  • Strengthening girl-serving organizations
Presenters will cover a wide variety of topics including:
  • Grassroots feminism in Pittsburgh
  • Better identifying and supporting girls who may have eating disorders
  • Developing inclusive programming at your organization to support youth of all abilities
  • How the Hardy Girls, Healthy Women curriculum is being further developed and implemented in Pittsburgh
  • Title IX, including PA's recently passed Equity in Interscholastic Athletics Disclosure Act (which goes into effect in October 2013)
  • AND SO MUCH MORE--information added daily to the Girls Coalition website.

Morning Girl Talk

Join FISA Foundation and The Heinz Endowments for an important event focused on talking to teen girls about sexual health and safety. Tiffani Thompson from Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force (PATF) will share curriculum from the Girl Talk Program, an educational group for adolescent girls of color to address:

  • sexual health and risk taking behaviors
  • STI/HIV prevention

  • condom negotiation

  • sexual coercion in relationships

You'll learn about the structure of this program, how these issues are addressed, and some of the themes that have been emerging in program implementation.

  • When: Friday, May 10, 2013; 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. (includes continental breakfast)
  • Where: Union Project, 801 N. Negley Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15206
  • Cost: There is no cost to attend this event, but registration is required
  • Register: Online

Following the presentation, the second part of the program will be comprised of structured networking, including discussion about the challenges and opportunities of working with girls about sexual health and relationships. Please come prepared with business cards and materials about your agency to share. We will send an update the week of the event to let you know how many people will be attendance.

You will leave this session with a broader knowledge of local resources (agencies, programs and individuals) who are working with girls, and a more specific understanding of the Girl Talk Program at PATF. We hope this will create new opportunities for collaboration and expand your knowledge of referral options.
