The Girls Coalition is supported by a
grant from the

Dear ,

It's February, and for the Girls Coalition of Southwestern PA, that means gearing up for some inspiring things happening throughout our region during this snowy month.  The biggest thing we're looking forward to? On February 23, we are thrilled to welcome girl activists Julia Bluhm and Izzy Labbe to Pittsburgh to share their story of how they successfully petitioned Seventeen Magazine to change their use of Photoshop on models.  We hope you will join us!  You'll find all of the details below.

In this issue, you will also find events, announcements and resources from our member organizations and community partners as we continue to support girls and work towards gender equity in our region and beyond.

So get involved, get active, and GET INSPIRED this month!

Sincerely,
Heather Mediate, Program Director

BE INSPIRED:  Girls Can Change the World

We hope you will join us as we welcome recent TEDxWomen speakers, Julia Bluhm and Izzy Labbe, to Pittsburgh. Julia and Izzy, both 14, are teenage feminist-activists at Hardy Girls Healthy Women and bloggers for the SPARK Movement - a girl-fueled activist movement to demand an end to the sexualization of women and girls in the media.  Together, they wrote a successful petition asking Seventeen Magazine to use more authentic images and to stop retouching photos to make girls and young women look sexier and less flawed.

The event also includes:
  • Successful girl-led activism from southwestern PA - featuring girls who are taking steps to challenge the injustices they see, using their voices to elevate the conversation around important issues, and otherwise changing the world right here in our own neighborhoods.
  • The opportunity to ask questions of the presenters
  • A chance to engage with local agencies and organizations who are providing opportunities for girls to successfully lead, or be a part of efforts to challenge conventions, eliminate barriers, and change the things they don't like about the world they live in.
WHEN:  Saturday, February 23 from 9:00am - 12:00noon
WHERE:  Sheraton Station Square, 300 West Station Square Drive,
Pittsburgh, PA 15219

COST: $8  (Group rates are available for eight or more - contact Heather for more information)
*This event is a great opportunity for girls to hear first-hand accounts of girl-led activism happening in our region and beyond.

SPARK Movement was founded by our partner Hardy Girls Healthy Women, along with Women's Media Center, ISIS, Inc. and The ASAP Initiative at Hunter College.  Both Julia and Izzy are members of Hardy Girls Healthy Women's Girls Advisory Board.

Community Cinema
Wonder Women!
The Untold Story of American Super Heroines

Please join us for a FREE Community Cinema screening of Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines.

Wonder Women! traces the fascinating evolution and legacy of Wonder Woman. From the birth of the comic book superheroine in the 1940s to the blockbusters of today, this film looks at how popular representations of powerful women often reflect society's anxieties about women's liberation.

Wonder Women explores our nation's long-term love affair with comic book superheroes and raises questions about the possibilities and contradictions or heroines within the genre. Reflecting our culture's deep-seated ambivalence toward powerful women-even in this so-called post- feminist era - women may be portrayed as good, or brave, or even featured as "action babies, " but rarely are they seen as heroes at the center or their own journey.

This screening in brought to you in partner with the Toonseum.

WHEN:  Thursday, March 7, 2013 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm

WHERE: Toonseum, 945 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222

THE MIDWIFE CENTER - Part of National Study

The Midwife Center was pleased to be part of a national study on birth centers that was recently published in the Journal of Midwifery & Women's Health.  Data from birth centers like ours helped The American Association of Birth Centers find that:

  • 84% of women who started labor at a birth center had their baby at the birth center
  • 94% of women had vaginal births (whether they remained at the birth center or were transferred to a hospital), with no evidence of compromised outcomes for babies.  Only 6% of women who started labor at a birth center had a cesarean birth, compared to the national average of 32.8%
  • The fetal and neonatal death rate was extremely low and comparable to what has been reported in other studies of low-risk populations.
