Happy New Year! It's time to look ahead. This year, we are looking forward to exploring how girls are changing the world, in both large and small ways and we hope you will join us. Don't miss the exciting things happening in our region in the weeks and months to come!
Three ways to GET INVOLVED:
1. Encourage the girls that you teach, mentor, and spend time with to SUBMIT AN ESSAY for our first ever Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay contest! Submissions are due THIS Thursday, January 10th.
2. ANNOUNCING The Girls Coalition Fifth Annual Conference: Girls Can Change the World!
- SAVE THE DATE for Wednesday, March 27th at the Ellis School.

3. JOIN US on Saturday, February 23rd for a morning of inspiration and dialogue as teens Julia Bluhm and Izzy Labbe share the story of how they successfully petitioned Seventeen Magazine to change their use of Photoshop on models.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest - For Girls in Grades 6 - 12
Reflecting on the work and life of Martin Luther King, Jr., this essay contest invites girls to consider the importance of standing up for equality and justice. This is an amazing opportunity for girls throughout our region to use their creative voices to raise awareness, encourage positivity, and ignite solutions for change.
- Use the words, legacy, and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. to inspire you to answer the question, "How can I change the world?" and/or "What does it mean to be part of the 'Beloved Community?'" and/or "How am I a leader for justice, equality, and fairness for ALL people in my community and beyond?"
- Submit a written or video essay by THIS Thursday, January 10th, 2013.
- Selected entries will be invited to present at the Union Project's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration on the evening of Monday, January 21st.
- Gift cards and gift bags will be awarded to all winners!

Soul Food Junkies
A film by Byrun Hurt
Join us for another installment of WQED's season of Community Cinema as we screen the film Soul Food Junkies by acclaimed documentary film maker, Byrun Hurt. Soul food lies at the heart of African American cultural identity. The black community's love affair with soul food is deep-rooted, complex, and in some cases, deadly. Soul Food Junkies puts this culinary tradition under the microscope to examine both its significance and its consequences.

Announcing The Girls Coalition Fifth Annual Conference: Girls Can Change the World!
We hope you will join us on Wednesday, March 27th for the fifth Annual Girls Coalition Conference. This year's theme is "Girls Can Change the World." For the first time, we will be partnering with a like-missioned organization to host this important event as The Ellis School will serve as the location for this year's conference.
We want you to get involved! Here's how:

Be Inspired: Girls Can Change the World
Julia Bluhm and Izzy Labbe, both 14, are teenage feminist-activists at hardy Girls Healthy Women and bloggers for the SPARK Movement - a girl-fueled activist movement to demand an end to the sexualization of women and girls in the media. Together, they wrote a successful petition asking Seventeen Magazine to use more authentic images and to stop retouching photos to make girls and young women look sexier and less flawed. Join us as we welcome recent TEDxWomen speakers to Pittsburgh.
SPARK Movement was founded by our partner Hardy Girls Healthy Women, along with Women's Media Center, ISIS, Inc. and The ASAP Initiative at Hunter College. Both Julia and Izzy are members of Hardy Girls Healthy Women's Girls Advisory Board.

Center for Victims - Peace it Together Community Initiative and Peace Partner Awards Ceremony: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
In an effort to recognize that all people desire the same things for their families - safe homes, neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces - join the Center for Victims for the 8th annual Peace it Together event. This event was created as a way to support and recognize community members who are currently acting as part of the solution in working towards peace for all people. The Peace Partner Awards honor those persons and organizations who, through their work or services, help individuals, families, and communities heal from violence and crime and therefore embody the spirit of PITCI by resolving conflict, restoring relationships, and peaceful communities in the Greater Pittsburgh region.

Union Project - Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration
Join Union Project for the annual community meal and evening of fellowship as we come together to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and discuss how we are living the dream! While breaking bread together, guests are encouraged to meet new people and speak about Dr. King's dream, how we pursue it, and how we are living it today. This year, due to building improvements at Union Project, the celebration will be held at Eastminster Presbyterian Church.
WHEN: Monday, January 21st
WHERE: Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 250 N. Highland Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.
WHAT: This event is free and open to the public. Dinner will be served at 4:30 pm, the celebration will also include storytelling for youngsters and their families.

FISA FOUNDATION and THE HEINZ ENDOWMENTS: Improving Adolescent Sexual Health: Helping Parents & Providers Communicate Effectively with Teens about Sex
This presentation will provide an overview of the broad range of influences on adolescent sexual decision-making. It will also focus on discussing interventions that have been proven to improve adolescent sexual decision-making, emphasizing those designed to help community service providers talk with teens about sex. The program will review programs designed to help parents talk with their children about sex and discuss a new University of Pittsburgh program designed to sexual communication skills to parents.
Learning objectives:
1.) To describe the multiple influences on adolescents' sexual decisions. 2.) To highlight interventions to improve community social service providers' skills for communicating with adolescents about sex. 3.) To review interventions to improve parents' skills for communicating with adolescents about sex, including a discussion about a new program developed by University of Pittsburgh researchers. 4.) To identify opportunities for integrating interventions to improve parent-adolescent communication into clinical and community-based settings.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Dr. Akers is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist at the University of Pittsburgh Magee Womens Hospital who is trained in public health and health services research. She has more than 15 years of experience in program development and evaluation having worked on projects sponsored by the World Bank, the World Health Organization, and local community-based initiatives. Most recently, she developed an innovative intervention that teaches mothers communication skills for talking about sex that are adapted from Motivational Interviewing.

PA STEM Girls Collaborative Project - Mini Grant Applications Now Open!
Mini-grants are awarded to girl-serving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) focused programs to support collaboration, address gaps and overlaps in service, and share exemplary practices. Mini-grants are a small amount of seed funding and are not intended to fully fund entire projects. The maximum mini-grant award is $1000.
