Missoula Chamber Legislative Update - The Missoula Chamber boasts notable successes during the 2013 Legislative Session

The Missoula Area Chamber of Commerce was hard at work during the 63rd Montana Legislature advocating on the behalf of our members. The Chamber had some notable successes, mostly due to the involvement of our members through the use of the new Advocacy Center website. Your opinion matters, and Montana Legislators heard the voice of the Missoula business community loud and clear in Helena this session. The Chamber wishes to extend our most heartfelt thanks to our many members that sent letters to the Legislature.

Here are some of the results that your chamber is proud to report we played key roles in:

House Bill 5 - Funds to build Missoula College

Outcome: Passed and signed into law

Notes:  Nearly 5,000 letters supporting Missoula College were sent by community members through the Chamber Advocacy Center. This was the third time that Missoula has tried to secure funding, and there is no doubt that the support of the business community is what made the difference this time.

Senate Bill 96 - Reduces the business equipment tax

Outcome: Passed and signed into law

Notes: The Missoula Chamber successfully worked with the other largest Chambers of Commerce in this state to encourage Governor Bullock to pass this tax reduction. This legislation exempts the first $100,000 of business equipment from tax, and also lowers the tax rate on equipment up to the first $6 million dollars.

Senate Bill 239 - Revises tax increment financing law

Outcome: Passed and signed into law

Notes: Missoula successfully uses tax increment financing to fund public infrastructure and encourage economic development without raising property taxes.  This bill allows counties wider use of tax increment financing.

House Bill 443 - Shortened life of tax increment financing districts by 10 years

Outcome: Died in committee

Notes: The Chamber opposed this bill because shortening the life of these districts impedes their ability to generate enough new revenue to pay off bonds.  This would have negatively impacted economic development efforts in Missoula. This issue was one that the Chamber worked in collaboration with the City and County.

Forest Discovery Days

The 18th annual Forest Discovery Days, coordinated by the Chamber's Forest Resource Committee, was held May 1-3 in Pattee Canyon. During the three day event, nearly 500 area 5th grade students had the opportunity to learn about healthy forest practices and management, forest ecology, the role of fires, animals, and archeology.
A new station this year was a portable saw-mill, which sawed
logs for the students. Approximately 30 forest professionals volunteered to educate the student on healthy forest practices and also professional opportunities in the forest industry.  Thank you to our sponsors:

Membership Division
Membership Survey
The results of the recent Membership Survey are being tallied and we will soon receive the final analysis. We are excited to learn about what our members value in Chamber membership and where we can improve services. On behalf of the Chamber Board of Directors and Staff, we would like thank everyone that participated. The results will help us achieve the goals of the Chamber Strategic Plan and to create innovative and valuable membership benefits

Relocation Guide Advertising Available!
Once a year, in partnership with the Missoulian, the Chamber produces a Relocation guide and a Directory. This year we will be combining these two publications into one comprehensive guide. The theme is Live, Work, & Play in Missoula and we have worked hard to gather the information and photos that capture the personality of Missoula.
The 2013 - 2014 guide will be a useful publication for locals and tourists. The guide is distributed throughout Missoula and mailed out upon request. It is also available electronically in a flip book style. Please click here to view the current electronic guide.  If you are interested in advertising in this year's guide, please contact Jacque Walawander at the Missoulian at (406) 214-7415 or (406) 523-5319.
