"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
, Brian Baker

A couple of years ago we surveyed the congregation to help guide our ministries. One of the strongest desires was for more opportunities to create supportive relationships with members of the congregation. In response to this desire, we are launching lots of small groups, each meeting with a different focus from watching movies to discussing healing and prayer to simply sharing a meal. If you haven't signed up for a group, I encourage you to look over this list and see if something interests you.

Trinity Volunteers at Floyd School
We have kicked off another year of supporting the teachers and students of Floyd Elementary School, a school with about 400 students, all of whom live in poverty. A group gathered on September 1 to welcome the new students.  We run a clothes-closet with free clothing, a backsnack program where children take backpacks of food home on Fridays, and several other programs. The program is in need of mac and cheese, fruit cups, oatmeal packets, peanut butter, ramen soup and tuna. We also need gently used children's clothing infant to size 12 as well as new underwear and socks. Gently used books as well.

All of the items can be placed in the barrels above the office on the second floor.  Please watch the enews for future activities at the school.

Blessings,
Brian

Help With Meals

Charis Hill

Charis Hill recently lost her father. She is currently traveling to and from North Carolina dealing with his estate. During this hectic time, she would really appreciate help with meals. She needs vegan meals (no meat, dairy, or eggs) dropped off at her house in midtown on Monday September 19 and Wednesday September 21 in the evening. Her needs include breakfast, lunch and dinner items. Items can be homemade, cold salad bar items from the co-op, Trader Joe's freezer meals, etc... If you can help, please email Rev. Megan at megan@trinitycathedral.org

The Reading Corner...

There's always something new in our library, which you can check out on the SECOND Sunday of the month.     ~~Phyllis Ehlert

We're back from summer vacation and should be in our groove, but what is that? Jessie Clemence addresses the issue in her book, If I Plug My Ears, God Can't Tell Me What to do & Other Ways We Miss Out on God's Adventures. She thinks sometimes we are willfully deaf because God asks us to do hard things-like quit a job, stay at a hard job, become a missionary, support a missionary, go to Ninevah, love someone who is unlovable, build an ark, save the Israelites! She would hear us pray, "Dear Lord, please note that I am not interested in doing these things because they are hard and uncomfortable. Also, the pay is often atrocious and people will think I'm a wacko. Amen."
Secret Pal
Secret Pals

We still need about 20 Secret Pals for the teachers and staff at Leataata Floyd School. Each teacher and staff person fills out an information sheet about themself and the work they do at the school. The Secret Pal (parishioner) is encouraged to send little notes of encouragement, to remember his or her birthday, special holidays, and help with supplies that might be needed.

A sign-up sheet will be available in the Great Hall or you can call me at 916-715-6942 or email me at mmhust@hotmail.com with any questions.

Thank You for your support of the teachers and staff at Leataata Floyd School.

Centering Prayer is a method of meditation that helps quiet the mind and participate in God's presence. It is a receptive form of prayer - a kind of resting in God.  Learn to just be...in the midst of God's love. All are welcome.

Leatatta Floyd Elementary School -
Our Outreach Partner

Floyd School logoLeatatta Floyd Elementary is the adopted school of Trinity Cathedral, which means the school is an outreach project of the church. The school is located at 1401 McClatchy Way, Sacramento, CA 95818.  The school is a 100 percent poverty school and part of the Sacramento City School District. There are approximately 400 students attending the school. Our mission is to provide a sound education for the children so they will have more opportunities for a better life.

We have been serving Floyd School (previously Jedediah Smith) since 2001. Trinity Cathedral began serving the school with retired teachers who wanted to help tutor children. So they began assisting in classrooms at the school. The first year at Christmas, we gave each child a book to keep.

Since then we have expanded our outreach to include the Back Snack Program, Secret Pals for the staff, a Clothes Closet, giving out holiday bags at Christmas, helping families at Christmas, opening a Mother's Day Shop, helping with field trips, putting on a school play and starting a drama club, reading on Dr. Seuss Day and providing volunteers and help as needed.

We began the Back Snack program about seven ago when it
Back Snack supplies
was pointed out that some children do not have food on the weekends. School breakfast and lunch is the mainstay of their diet. So we began packing backpacks on Fridays with peanut butter, a loaf of bread, granola bars, a box of macaroni and cheese, Raman soup, fruit cups and an apple. We try to have enough food for each family member for the weekend. We are working with River City Food Bank (our Episcopal Food Bank) to get some foods at a reduced rate, especially bread and peanut butter. We receive food and monetary donations from the congregation and the community.

Along with the Back Snacks we offer a children's clothes closet once a month where parents can come shop for their children. The teachers have appreciated the clothes closet when an accident happens at school and there are otherwise no dry clothes available.

We try to encourage the teachers and staff by providing Secret Pals. The Secret Pal is a parishioner who would like to help at the school but cannot because they have work commitments.  The Secret Pal is
Secret Pal year end luncheon
encouraged to send little notes of encouragement to the staff member, remember his or her birthday and special holidays. Sometimes the Secret Pal will ask the teacher what supplies the class might need. They supply whatever they can to help the teacher.  At the end of the year the Staff and Secret Pals have party to meet each other.

Giving out Holiday gift bags
At holiday time we decorate gift bags for each child in the school. The bags are then filled with a book, socks, toothbrush, toothpaste, a few toys, a pencil and candy canes. They are delivered to the students on the last day of school before winter break. Volunteers from Trinity, Santa, and his Elves distribute the bags to each child in their classrooms.

We will be sponsoring our Second Annual Trips for Kids Benefit Dinner and Auction on February 3, 2017. The money raised will help pay for buses, admissions for all students and science camp for sixth grades

Volunteer Opportunities: Each fall we are looking for helpers for: the Back Snack and Clothes Closet programs on Friday afternoons from 1:30-3:00, for Secret Pals for the staff, people who can help organize and help deliver Holiday bags and others who can help with the luncheons and coffees for the staff. We need donations of food and children's clothing and especially new underwear and socks for both boys and girls.  Monetary donations are always welcome when we need to buy some items.

Trinity Cathedral has always been very supportive of this project. Thank you for your on-going support.

Blessings and Love,

The Song of Solomon Exposed

Facilitated by Morey Lloyd
Take a tour of the most controversial book in Hebrew Scriptures. A book in the Wisdom tradition without Wisdom teachings. A book in Holy Scripture without the mention of the Name of the Lord. A book of Erotic poetry without moral lessons. No prayers, no introduction and no explanation! "Oh, I wish to be kissed with the kisses of his mouth!", thus begins our journey. Together let us peruse the passion and the pleasure of unadulterated desire for the meaning of life, liberty and the pursuit. Six weekly sessions using only the Biblical texts: Hebrew, Greek, Latin and the English versions. Drop-ins always welcomed.

Heirs to the Forgotten Kingdoms: Journeys Into the Disappearing Religions of the Middle East by Gerard Russell

Facilitated by Susan Hotchkiss
In this book, former British and UN diplomat Gerard Russell introduces the world to seven little known religions of the Middle East, writes their histories, participates in ancient rituals as well as discusses modern threats to their continuing existence.  Not only is reading this timely, it will be fascinating to learn about these peoples, their religions and their cultures.  The book is available in the Cathedral Bookshop.

For the Jesus & Buddha: The Parallel Sayings edited by Marcus Borg

Facilitated by Andre Jensen
This class will reflect on the affinities between Christianity and Buddhism as revealed in Marcus Borg's beautiful compilation of text and illustration. We'll discuss how close the parallels are, where differences between them seem most significant, and how our consideration of them enhances our understanding of our own faith. These conversations are sure to be thought provoking.

Story Listening Experience and Training
Saturday September 17th 10am-12pm, Assembly Area
All are Welcome to this free event

One of the simplest yet profound ways we can minister to each other and our neighbors is through practicing presence and deep listening. A Minister friend of mine often says "we are called to listen each other into wholeness." And what a gift of ministry that is. Each of us has a story that the world would be greater for knowing. And each of us has the capacity to listen to others and provide strength and energy for the story teller. Over the next year, the Cathedral will offer experiences for more and more parishioners to share powerful stories of their life and ministry in the world. We trust that these stories will be great tools for all of us to grow closer to Christ and our call in the world. I hope you will join me for a morning of story listening experiences and training that will help all of us strengthen our skills and presence for this journey.

Parenting Matters
Meets at 10:15am in Room B

Growing strong, healthy, and faith filled families is the most challenging and important work we do!  Parenting Matters is an opportunity to laugh and learn and share this work together!  Beginning this Sunday, Parenting Matters will meet on the third Sunday of each month.  Parents and grandparents of children from birth - high school will meet from 10:15 - 11:15 in Classroom B off of the Great Hall.
From The Terrible Twos to surviving the transition to college and work years, we'll look at a different topics each month, share successes, and explore resources.
- Rev. Kathy Hopner
EpiscopalYouthFellowship
Meets at 10:15am

After conversations with many families, we've made a change to our youth programing this year.  We have merged youth group and Sunday School time on Sunday, and have decided to add to our youth program in other ways, which won't impact Sunday afternoons.  The 10:15 - 11:15 time on Sundays will become youth group as well as Sunday School.  We've realized that for many families, Sunday afternoons are the only unscheduled time in the week; we want to honor that time.  We've also realized that our youth carry heavy school loads and often have work to do on Sundays.  On the third Sunday of the month, we will continue to work at River City Food Bank, which begins today!  Please contact Rev. Kathy Hopner or Rev. Megan Anderson for more information about this program.
Sunday Morning Journey
(Formerly the 30/40's and Beyond)
Meets 10:15am in the Conference Room

The group is watching and discussing the Discovery DVD Series - Your Spiritual Journey developed by the Episcopal Diocese of Texas. This DVD series provides an array of topics dealing with the church and our spiritual journeys. Topics include What we Believe and the Creeds, Prayer, Ministry and our Gifts, and Mission work in our daily lives. Each Sunday we will watch one or two of the segments followed by discussion. Scripture readings and thought provoking questions are provided to continue pondering the topic throughout the week.

All are welcome! Come join us any Sunday morning. Contact Amy Dierlam at dnarock@pacbell.net if you have questions.
Finding Peace and Joy in Troubled Times
Meets at 10:15 in Room A

Family Promise Family Promise
Returns to Trinity
September 18-24

We are again blessed to host the homeless families of Family Promise Sacramento for the week of September 18-24, 2016. As the families come in each day at 5 p.m. to spend the night in our Great Hall, we need hosts to greet and serve them, folks to prepare or buy dinner for them, and overnight hosts to make sure they are comfortable and safe and who can set out a simple breakfast for them in the morning. At the end of our host week, we also need volunteers to help break down the cots and load them in the Family Promise trailer, launder the bedding, and haul the trailer to the next host church. You only need volunteer for one evening during the week.

Please sign up at the Family Promise poster hanging in the Great Hall, or contact Eleanor Taniguchi, Family Promise Coordinator: ehtaniguchi@gmail.com or text 916-708-4295.

Centering Prayer (day of silence)
Contemplative Vision:
Awakening to Beauty, Truth & Goodness
Saturday, October 8, 2016, 9:00am to 3:30pm
Mercy Center, Auburn
Cost: $35.00 (includes lunch)
(non-refundable payment due with registration)

Contemplative Outreach of Sacramento/Stockton Area (COSSA), along with Mercy Center Auburn, invites you to a day of silence, prayer, and reflection.

This day of silence will include several sessions of Centering Prayer, some teachings by Fr. Thomas Keating and Fr. Richard Rohr, followed by reflective sharing. Our day of prayer, contemplation, and peace will allow for a deeper journey into the healing silence of God.

Centering Prayer is a gentle, silent method of consenting to God's presence and healing action within us. Based on the rich Christian contemplative heritage, Centering Prayer offers each of us a way to be open to God. By taking time to "rest in God" each day, we open our awareness to the gift of God's "constant and persevering" presence.
New to Centering Prayer? We will provide in-depth instruction and practice to all newcomers. These opportunities will help to fully acquaint you with this richly rewarding connection to God.
