Dean Baker, Mark Baker and Andrea Baker+ at West Point

After seven weeks away, it's so good to be back home and back to Trinity Cathedral.  I had a good time of prayer, study, rest and Andrea and I had some great visits with our children. The final trip was to West Point to see Mark at the end of his summer basic training when he was welcomed as a cadet into the Corps of Cadets.

I return energized for a new program year at Trinity. I met with the clergy yesterday for a retreat where we were able to connect and talk about our hopes for the Fall.  We talked about two priorities: increasing opportunities for people to deepen relationships, and help people develop spiritual practices that can keep us grounded in this time of conflict and division in our country.  We are planning new opportunities to meet in small groups and I will be teaching a class on Sunday mornings on spiritual practices.

I met with the executive committee of the vestry last night as well. The vestry is working hard to strengthen our budgeting process, financial planning and stewardship.  I think we are making important progress.  The strategic planning steering committee has also been working hard over the last few weeks and I expect the congregation will be learning more about the process soon.  Bud Swank has helped launch a fundraising efforts that will help us sustain our programming while we get long-range plans in place.

I am very impressed with the appearance of our facility.  Clearly a great deal of work has happened in the last few weeks. I don't know if our Cathedral has ever looked better.

I look forward to preaching and worshipping with you this Sunday.

Blessings,
Brian

The Planned Giving Corner

The Planned Giving (PG) Team is working on a new program to help parishioners build their legacies and provide vibrant, healthy ministries at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral today and for generations to come.   The program will include estate planning, legacy giving, and updated policies to insure your gift is handled properly and confidentially.

Did you already include Trinity Cathedral in your estate plans? Not sure?

The Stewardship Team will be hosting a reception on Friday, August 26th at 4pm to thank all our planned givers for insuring a rich future for all our ministries. Please contact Chris Tzimenatos, our Planned Giving Shepherd, at 916-317-7854 or cmtzimenatos@hotmail.com to confirm or update your basic information or to learn more about planned giving.

The Reading Corner...

There's always something new in our library, which you can check out on the SECOND Sunday of the month.     ~~Phyllis Ehlert

Isn't it appropriate that this month we feature a title on wildfires? Fire Monks: Zen Mind Meets Wildfire by Colleen Morton Busch, relates a frightening event in 2008 when a wildfire almost engulfed the oldest Zen Buddhist monastery in the United States, located in Tassajara, California. Five monks decided to refuse evacuation, and worked with professional firefighters to channel the blaze.

The Song of Solomon Exposed

Facilitated by Morey Lloyd
Take a tour of the most controversial book in Hebrew Scriptures. A book in the Wisdom tradition without Wisdom teachings. A book in Holy Scripture without the mention of the Name of the Lord. A book of Erotic poetry without moral lessons. No prayers, no introduction and no explanation! "Oh, I wish to be kissed with the kisses of his mouth!", thus begins our journey. Together let us peruse the passion and the pleasure of unadulterated desire for the meaning of life, liberty and the pursuit. Six weekly sessions using only the Biblical texts: Hebrew, Greek, Latin and the English versions. Drop-ins always welcomed.

Heirs to the Forgotten Kingdoms: Journeys Into the Disappearing Religions of the Middle East by Gerard Russell

Facilitated by Susan Hotchkiss
In this book, former British and UN diplomat Gerard Russell introduces the world to seven little known religions of the Middle East, writes their histories, participates in ancient rituals as well as discusses modern threats to their continuing existence.  Not only is reading this timely, it will be fascinating to learn about these peoples, their religions and their cultures.  The book is available in the Cathedral Bookshop.

Family Promise Family Promise
Returns to Trinity
September 18-24

We are again blessed to host the homeless families of Family Promise Sacramento for the week of September 18-24, 2016. As the families come in each day at 5 p.m. to spend the night in our Great Hall, we need hosts to greet and serve them, folks to prepare or buy dinner for them, and overnight hosts to make sure they are comfortable and safe and who can set out a simple breakfast for them in the morning. At the end of our host week, we also need volunteers to help break down the cots and load them in the Family Promise trailer, launder the bedding, and haul the trailer to the next host church. You only need volunteer for one evening during the week. If you wish to drop off a dinner at the kitchen with instructions on how to prepare the food, that works too!

Please contact Eleanor Taniguchi, Family Promise Coordinator, if you would like to help or want more information: ehtaniguchi@gmail.com or text 916-708-4295.

Below is a recent note to Nancy Tennyson from Kobe's mother, Annie Barajas:
Kobe is good he has been in pain today and Saturday was a very rough day. But it's to be expected. He's going to his dads today but HE said he might want to come back early. Their birthday is coming up on the 23rd by any chance could you put the word out . I am trying to get as many people to send Birthday cards so when they return they will have a lot of love to open. Kobe said 13 was big so Cordell and I are trying to make it one to remember for Chad and Kobe. If they would like to enclose Gift cards the boys like Walmart, Game Stop, Toys rUs.
