"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Over the past few weeks, many different Cathedral preachers have addressed the current violence and tragedy in our local and global communities. In these uncertain and scary times, it is a gift to come together to meditate on God's word and call for us. I am encouraged by the prophetic words that these preachers and other community members share to strengthen us.

A few weeks ago I preached on the importance of prayerful contemplation and just action. In our current world, this call can seem overwhelming. You may remember that I asked the congregation, "What do you need?"

I ask again today. What do you need for strength on your journey?

One spiritual practice that really nourishes my life is meditation. I practice many forms; from quiet sitting, to sacred chanting, to movement meditation. I would like the share these practices with this community.

For the month of August I will be hosting a series on meditation every Sunday from 10:30-11:00am upstairs in the Trinity Conference Room. Each Sunday we will explore a different practice. All are welcome! Please email me with any questions: megan@trinitycathedral.org. I hope to see you at the first gathering on August 7th.

Blessings,

The Planned Giving Corner

The Planned Giving (PG) Team is working on a new program to help parishioners build their legacies and provide vibrant, healthy ministries at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral today and for generations to come.   The program will include estate planning, legacy giving, and updated policies to insure your gift is handled properly and confidentially.

Did you already include Trinity Cathedral in your estate plans? Not sure?

The Stewardship Team will be hosting a reception on Friday, August 26th at 4pm to thank all our planned givers for insuring a rich future for all our ministries. Please contact Chris Tzimenatos, our Planned Giving Shepherd, at 916-317-7854 or cmtzimenatos@hotmail.com to confirm or update your basic information or to learn more about planned giving.
My name is Rosie.
I am currently working part-time at Trinity Cathedral within the Operations Department reporting to Jerry Paré. I would like to find an additional opportunity to work for a dynamic employer where I can utilize skills and experience I've obtained within the non-profit and private/public sectors. I bring 15 + years working experience in Business Administration, Education, and Healthcare as C-Level Support and Project Management. If you are looking to hire a top-notch professional to help take your company to the next level, please contact me. Rosie Lauborough, Email: RosieL07@gmail.com.

The Reading Corner...

There's always something new in our library, which you can check out on the SECOND Sunday of the month.     ~~Phyllis Ehlert

Isn't it appropriate that this month we feature a title on wildfires? Fire Monks: Zen Mind Meets Wildfire by Colleen Morton Busch, relates a frightening event in 2008 when a wildfire almost engulfed the oldest Zen Buddhist monastery in the United States, located in Tassajara, California. Five monks decided to refuse evacuation, and worked with professional firefighters to channel the blaze.

Echoes of an Angel
Introduced by Phyllis Ehlert

Echoes of an Angel is the true story of a child who seemed destined for a world of darkness when he became blind at the age of two. But due to his mother's encouragement, he went on to master echolocation - the ability to detect the size and shape of objects through the reflection of sound waves by clicking his tongue.  Ben could ride his bike and even shoot baskets. Sacramento Bee writer Chris Macias and Ben Underwood's mother, Aquanetta Gordon, tell us about the family's unshakable faith in God and each other.

AUGUST 4 - Theology of Young Adult Fiction
Presented by Kelly Mieske
Imagine yourself when you were in 7th grade.  What was your favorite reading spot?  Did you curl up on your bed in your room, decorated somewhere   between childhood and adulthood? When you look down at your hands, what treasure are you holding? Three of my favorite series were: Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time series; C.S. Lewis's  Narnia Chronicles; Lois Lowry's The Giver Quartet. I have revisited these classics as an adult and they are still good reads.  They also have pretty interesting theological themes that we can explore together.

AUGUST 11 - Prince
Presented by Derek Murray
"When Doves Cry: A brief look at the music and spiritual journey of Prince."

Outreach. Helping those who need to be helped. It is what Church is about. And Trinity models this well. It seems that every week in the E-news and in the insert in the Sunday bulletins we are told about one or another outreach effort going on. Family Promise, Community Dinners, Floyd School, Pilgrimage Sacramento (formerly Safe Ground), T-ACT, River City Food Bank, and more. Have you wondered about all of the outreach ministries happening at here at Trinity? Who are these groups? What exactly do they do? Who can I contact if I want to help out?

On August 14, after the 7:30, 9:00, and 11:15 services, there will be a Ministry Fair in the Great Hall. Representatives from our core outreach ministries (listed above) will have tables laden with information about their groups. Stop by and chat with them. They'll be thrilled to share with you about their ministry, who they are helping and how. There are so many ways you can participate, some with small time commitments.

Approximately once per month we will showcase one of the core ministries. There will be an article in the E-news with information on that ministry. During the three early services we will commission the members of the ministry team, emphasizing that it is God's work that they are doing. They will have a table in the Great Hall after the services where you can meet and chat with the team, and learn more about what they do. The first ministry to be presented will be Family Promise on August 14. The schedule is:
            August 14              Family Promise
            September 18        Floyd School
            October 16             Pilgrimage Sacramento
            January, 2017        T-ACT
February, 2017       River City Food Bank

Consider the dismissal after our worship time: "Go in peace to love and serve the Lord." We serve God by using the gifts He has given us to serve His children. We are blessed that at Trinity there are so many ways we can do that.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions, or if you'd like to get involved!

Kobe Barajas and His Family
Still Need Your Help

Annie, Kobe and Chad Barajas

Kobe Barajas has a terminal brain tumor. He is 13 years old and has been dealing with brain cancer since he was 9. He is not expected to live more than 6 more months. His mother is Annie Barajas who attended Trinity with her parents Rane'e and John Les Callett in the 1990s. Annie has had to quit work to take care of Kobe and his twin brother Chad. The family has less income than the rent right now.

They are getting help from the River City Food Bank for food for the family. You can send cash donations to Trinity Cathedral marked "For Kobe" or put them in the offering plate on Sunday marked "For Kobe". You can also help by donating gas cards or grocery gift cards for Safeway or Save Mart. They can be placed in the Floyd School box and I will pick them up and give them to the family. Please put gift cards in an envelope and write Barajas Family on the envelope.

We will begin taking meals to the Barajas family starting August 25. You can take them to the church, my house or directly to the family. I will have further information for you when you sign up. Some of the family favorites are spaghetti, lasagna, pork chops, macaroni and cheese, chicken and roast beef.

If you can help with a meal please sign up at the Welcome Center by the picture of Annie and Kobe. I will be in touch with you.

Thank you so much for helping this family.

Blessings,
Canon Nancy Tennyson
