Rhythms of Grace

You've got to love summer! The evenings are long and the heat of the day has usually given way to the Delta breeze. Summer begs for casual clothes. Farmers' markets are full, summer vegetables and fruits are in abundant supply. There are free concerts in the parks and even the trees are timed to give their fullest shade.

Summer is a time to carve out a space for rest and re-creation. It's a chance to examine what is around you that can fill you with a sense of peace, beauty and joy. I love being a part of the mid-week services here at the Cathedral. They are less complicated and give me a chance to pause and enjoy the beauty of our worship place. The East Transept is filled with memories of so many I have loved but see no longer. Somehow their presence seems close when we pray in that sacred place.

Summer is a chance to play. There are some beautiful day trips from Sacramento that allow you to escape the heat and soak up the natural beauty that surrounds us. I love it when Pat and I can picnic up at Donner Lake State Park for the day. There are easy walking paths around the lake as well as tables for a mid-day meal. Big Trees National Park is another day trip that allows you to escape the noise of election news and experience the peace and majesty of these magnificent trees. But top on my list would always be a day at Muir Woods. It is a Cathedral in its own right. I am always in awe of how people - even families with children - settle into the sacredness of that space. Any argument that may have transpired in the car getting there seems to drain away when one walks into the holiness of that place. Closer to home, we are blessed to have the Effie Yeaw Nature Center, the Crocker Art Museum and numerous cultural centers to help heal our wearied souls.

Jesus modeled the need for us to have rhythms of grace as part of living a holy life. The Gospel of Luke reminds us that: "As often as possible, Jesus withdrew to an out-of-the-way place to pray." (Luke 5:16) He knew that to do the work he was sent to do he needed to withdraw and find an open space to reconnect with God's life-giving grace. It's called "balance". We know when we have it and we suffer (as do those around us) when we lack it!

I encourage you to enjoy the gift of summer. May it be a time of respite and peace.

Blessings,

Lynell+

The Planned Giving Corner

The Planned Giving (PG) Team is working on a new program to help parishioners build their legacies and provide vibrant, healthy ministries at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral today and for generations to come.   The program will include estate planning, legacy giving, and updated policies to insure your gift is handled properly and confidentially.

Did you already include Trinity Cathedral in your estate plans? Not sure?

The Stewardship Team will be hosting a reception on Friday, August 26th at 4pm to thank all our planned givers for insuring a rich future for all our ministries. Please contact Chris Tzimenatos, our Planned Giving Shepherd, at 916-317-7854 or cmtzimenatos@hotmail.com to confirm or update your basic information or to learn more about planned giving.

Can we never escape politics? Christians and the Common Good is subtitled How Faith Intersects with Public Life. Methodist preacher Charles Gutenson asserts that Christians have soured on religious involvement in politics. But the kingdom of God is concerned with justice and communal well-being. He wants us to concentrate on the nature of God so that we can form a reasonable framework for engaging in healthy discussions about how to best serve the common good.

Goodbye, for Awhile

Beloved Community,

I have submitted a request to Bishop Beisner for a one year sabbatical leave from the cathedral. Sunday will be my last day with you. This last year has been a year of great sorrow and great joy and I simply need a year of rest and discernment.

Know how much I love serving you and how much I love and respect each and every one of you. I look forward to my return. I ask that you continue your support of all the Outreach Ministries, and I know for certain that the love you have for one another will continue to make this congregation the Beloved Community it has always been. You are clearly the salt of the earth.

'Go forth to love and serve the Lord'

Steve
Thank you Annette Braddon-Walker!

After five years of caring for the solarium garden area in front of the nursery, Annette is retiring from her garden
Dianella
chores. Annette had fun with this beautification project, and Trinity Congregants benefited from her lovely efforts.

Star Jasmine
Annette designed and cared for the beautiful nursery garden, which at one time included over a dozen species of plants, including Star Jasmine, Gardenia, Dianella, and Lambs Ear, always a favorite for its soft leaves, a hit with the children. She also helped plant and care for the area to the right of the west transept stained-glass window, which
Gardenia
included Primrose, Calla and Holly. Annette would like to thank several people for their support in this endeavor, providing plants, time and labor: Lyle Gramling, Ruth Fitch and other Flower Committee members, Susan Forde, Nancy Earl, and Nancy Tennyson, Jeff Beck, the TREE members, and especially the watering done by the Custodian staff, Thomas, Mike and Chris.

This area suffered during our recent painting, as it was unsafe to water and create soft ground while the painters were on tall ladders. Eileen Harvey-Qualset is helping to restore this area. If you would like to volunteer to help with solarium garden spaces, please contact Eileen at (916) 502-0633 or Eileen@qualset.net.
Trinity Landscape Restoration

On Saturday, July 16, 20 Trinity members worked together to restore the east side of the Cathedral's landscape. Beginning at 8 am, we dug out volunteer trees, pulled weeds, straightened garden edges, trimmed plants, raked and generally got enjoyably dirty! Although understory plants would be nice, we are not adding any at this time because of the drought and because our irrigation system is in need of replacement. Hand watering an area this big is not a chore any of us want to take on!

Mulching is in our future!

Big THANK YOU: Kevin Sitter, James and Tina Hurley, Steve and Kathy Twibel, Cheri Meadows, Doug and Amy Dierlam, Jerry Pare, Lyle Gramling, Gina Schumacher, Per Ostlund, Paul Brosio, Rob Stoinoff, Dana Chamness, Thomas Bush, Eileen Harvey-Qualset, Linda Aston, Bill and Linda Mason.

Want to volunteer? Questions? Suggestions? Please contact Eileen Harvey-Qualset at (916) 502-0633 or Eileen@qualset.net.

July 28th - Echoes of an Angel
Introduced by Phyllis Ehlert
Echoes of an Angel is the true story of a child who seemed destined for a world of darkness when he became blind at the age of two. But due to his mother's encouragement, he went on to master echolocation - the ability to detect the size and shape of objects through the reflection of sound waves by clicking his tongue.  Ben could ride his bike and even shoot baskets. Sacramento Bee writer Chris Macias and Ben Underwood's mother, Aquanetta Gordon, tell us about the family's unshakable faith in God and each other.

AUGUST 4 - Theology of Young Adult Fiction
Presented by Kelly Mieske
Imagine yourself when you were in 7th grade.  What was your favorite reading spot?  Did you curl up on your bed in your room, decorated somewhere   between childhood and adulthood? When you look down at your hands, what treasure are you holding? Three of my favorite series were: Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time series; C.S. Lewis's  Narnia Chronicles; Lois Lowry's The Giver Quartet. I have revisited these classics as an adult and they are still good reads.  They also have pretty interesting theological themes that we can explore together.

AUGUST 11 - Prince
Presented by Derek Murray
"When Doves Cry: A brief look at the music and spiritual journey of Prince."

Kobe Barajas and His Family
Still Need Your Help

Annie, Kobe and Chad Barajas

Kobe Barajas has a terminal brain tumor. He is 13 years old and has been dealing with brain cancer since he was 9. He is not expected to live more than 6 more months. His mother is Annie Barajas who attended Trinity with her parents Rane'e and John Les Callett in the 1990s. Annie has had to quit work to take care of Kobe and his twin brother Chad. The family has less income than the rent right now.

They are getting help from the River City Food Bank for food for the family. You can send cash donations to Steve Skiffington's discretionary account or put them in the offering plate on Sunday marked "For Kobe". You can also help by donating gas cards or grocery gift cards for Safeway or Save Mart. They can be placed in the Floyd School box and I will pick them up and give them to the family. Please put gift cards in an envelope and write Barajas Family on the envelope.

We will begin taking meals to the Barajas family starting August 25. You can take them to the church, my house or directly to the family. I will have further information for you when you sign up. Some of the family favorites are spaghetti, lasagna, pork chops, macaroni and cheese, chicken and roast beef.

If you can help with a meal please sign up at the Welcome Center by the picture of Annie and Kobe. I will be in touch with you.

Thank you so much for helping this family.

Blessings,
Canon Nancy Tennyson
