"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

On Tuesday a large interfaith memorial service was held for the Dallas police officers who were killed at last week's protest. The service also addressed the grief and loss surrounding the police killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. I listened in live on the radio.

Moving prayers were offered by a Rabbi, and Imam, and a Christian Minister. While each used language from different faith traditions, I was struck by their shared underlying prophetic message. In the wake of unspeakable tragedy, in the absence of words, in the uncertainty of the days to come, God is still with us. God is with us. God will give us the strength to move forward, and the wisdom and grace to live faithfully.

In these recent days of violence, death, division, and despair, I am grateful for the communities that have come together in support of one another. I am grateful for the prophetic voices that speak out against racial violence and prejudice, gun violence, and all the many ways we as a human family deny the belovedness of all God's children.

I recommend listening to the whole memorial service when you have a free evening. If you even have half an hour to spare, I commend President Obama's speech to you. It can be found here. I am moved by the way he invokes the prophetic words of the Prophet Ezekiel to imagine and work towards a nation and a world that transforms righteous anger into more justice and peace. "I will give you a new heart," the Lord says, "and put a new spirit in you. I will remove from you your heart of stone, and give you a heart of flesh." The President continues, "That's what we must pray for, each of us. A new heart. Not a heart of stone, but a heart open to the fears and hopes and challenges of our fellow citizens."

Who are the prophetic voices you hear crying out in our current wilderness? Who are the voices we need to hear? I urge you to share them with this church community and beyond. May we listen, speak, and act in the days to come with open hearts and open arms.

Peace,
Megan +

Can we never escape politics? Christians and the Common Good is subtitled How Faith Intersects with Public Life. Methodist preacher Charles Gutenson asserts that Christians have soured on religious involvement in politics. But the kingdom of God is concerned with justice and communal well-being. He wants us to concentrate on the nature of God so that we can form a reasonable framework for engaging in healthy discussions about how to best serve the common good.

July 28th - Echoes of an Angel
Introduced by Phyllis Ehlert
Echoes of an Angel is the true story of a child who seemed destined for a world of darkness when he became blind at the age of two. But due to his mother's encouragement, he went on to master echolocation - the ability to detect the size and shape of objects through the reflection of sound waves by clicking his tongue.  Ben could ride his bike and even shoot baskets. Sacramento Bee writer Chris Macias and Ben Underwood's mother, Aquanetta Gordon, tell us about the family's unshakable faith in God and each other.

AUGUST 4 - Theology of Young Adult Fiction
Presented by Kelly Mieske
Imagine yourself when you were in 7th grade.  What was your favorite reading spot?  Did you curl up on your bed in your room, decorated somewhere   between childhood and adulthood? When you look down at your hands, what treasure are you holding? Three of my favorite series were: Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time series; C.S. Lewis's  Narnia Chronicles; Lois Lowry's The Giver Quartet. I have revisited these classics as an adult and they are still good reads.  They also have pretty interesting theological themes that we can explore together.

AUGUST 11 - Prince

Cool as a cucumber!

Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day (I can provide the list on request). A couple of chunks of cucumber are a good pick-me-up in the afternoon and can ward off snacking binges.   If you want to avoid a hangover or morning headache, eat a few slices before going to bed. In the garden, a few slices in a small aluminum pie tin placed among your plants will deter pests-apparently the chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum and give off a scent that make slugs and snails flee the area!   Worth a try, right?

And don't forget to come to TREE's Film Festival in August-details are given in the Voices of Faith column. We hope to see you and friends on Thursday evenings, August 18, 25, and September 1.

Our film on September 1st will be How to Let Go of the World and Love All Things Climate Can't Change - Josh Fox documentary. We will show the second half of this film because it is uplifting and shares what people are doing to mitigate against climate change. The first half establishes climate change as fact-but we know that already-thank you, Al Gore.
For those of you who have computers: please check out the 2016 TED talk by Al Gore on the 10th anniversary of his presenting An Inconvenient Truth. It is on You-Tube. Fabulous!
Kobe Barajas and His Family
Still Need Your Help

Annie, Kobe and Chad Barajas

Kobe Barajas has a terminal brain tumor. He is 13 years old and has been dealing with brain cancer since he was 9. He is not expected to live more than 6 more months. His mother is Annie Barajas who attended Trinity with her parents Rane'e and John Les Callett in the 1990s. Annie has had to quit work to take care of Kobe and his twin brother Chad. The family has less income than the rent right now.

They are getting help from the River City Food Bank for food for the family. You can send cash donations to Steve Skiffington's discretionary account or put them in the offering plate on Sunday marked "For Kobe". You can also help by donating gas cards or grocery gift cards for Safeway or Save Mart. They can be placed in the Floyd School box and I will pick them up and give them to the family. Please put gift cards in an envelope and write Barajas Family on the envelope.

Thank you so much for helping this family.

Blessings,
Canon Nancy Tennyson

Jake Javiar

From Lis Padula

Jake has qualified for a 15year stem cell research for spinal cord injuries.

Many Trinity parishioners have been praying for Jake. Here is the latest:

Thanks for all your prayers!! 10 MILLION STEM CELLS:    Jake's stem cell surgery went exceptionally well.

Stanford doctors, Gary Steinberg and Marco Lee who performed the delicate operation at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center said, they're very pleased in how the cells entered the spinal cord smoothly without rejection.

Jake's mom, Isabelle said, "The surgery went better than expected and all 10 million stem cells went into Jake's spinal cord very easily and none leaked back out which would have caused complications.  The surgeons were also hugely impressed with the hardware fusion of C4-C7 performed by Dr. Cheng at John Muir Medical Center on the day of Jake's injury on June 9th stating Jake's neck alignment was impeccable.  The doctors also said most major gains in movement have come around the 60-day mark but can take as long as a year later.  We are hoping for no infections and a speedy recovery right now."

Jake was put back in the intensive care unit following surgery and the past few days have been pretty rough.  He's been feeling sick to his stomach and has had intense headaches. The doctors say that's considered normal due to some of the spinal fluids being released during surgery.  Jake's neck and shoulders are also very sore and he's eyes are also really sensitive to the light.  The doctors have now adjusted his pain management medicine and that seems to be helping a great deal.

They also increased Jake's nutrition through his feeding tube and that's helping him to bounce back even more.

And then yesterday his family says, Jake received a very special surprise.

Isabelle texted: "Jake was most ecstatic when his brothers, Jason and Cameron walked in with a New England Patriots #12 Jersey signed, "JAKE, GO PATS! Tom Brady"!!!  The look on Jake's face lit up the whole room!  It was twice as amusing when the autographed football was placed in to Jake's hand. With a large grin on his face, all Jake could say was, "that's sick!"

Yes, Tom Brady, New England Patriots Quarterback heard the news that Jake was a huge Patriots fan and came through for him by sending the autographed items. Couldn't be more thrilled for Jake."

Jake continues to make progress every day!  I got a chance to see for myself when I visited him twice last week.  Watching him smile can just melt your heart.  Despite everything he's going through, Jake's attitude and spirits remain incredibly positive.  He's a determined young man who is focused on healing. The hope is that the stem cell treatment will help give him the use of his hands back. He said he was very excited to have the opportunity to take part in this cutting edge study not sands of other people who have suffered devastating spinal cord injuries.

We're all praying for you Jake.
Keep fighting!!
