SummerFest 2016 promises to be bigger and better than last year's!
Save the date: AUGUST 28th 10 AM - 2 PM

SummerFest 2015 was a great success. We had the Dean in the dunk tank, games and demonstrations in the garden, the Dean in the dunk tank, wonderful musical entertainment, (did I mention the Dean in the dunk tank??), hamburgers and hot dogs, games for the children, and
Bean bag toss
magnificent sidewalk chalk art that lasted for weeks after the event.

This year the Fest will be even more fun. Besides the dunk tank, we will have a bounce house and numerous games for the kids. Yes, the Men's Group will once again serve wonderful hot dogs and hamburgers (including veggie burgers).   The chili cook off, ice cream, chalk art and "center stage" for entertainment will be back. We are adding a dessert auction, art walk and a water melon eating contest.
Kami Davis taking the plunge

And we want YOU to help us make this a true Fest! Initial signups will be at the Welcome Center this Sunday. We are looking for entertainers (musicians, comedians, jugglers,....What is your talent?)  We will also have sign-ups for dessert bakers and for cooks in the chili cook-off.   And, yes, we need help with set up, clean up and all of the work that is needed to make this another successful SummerFest!

Your Hospitality Team created SummerFest as a way of combinin
Jerry Paré taking the plunge
g two former summer events: the Beach Party for the kids and the Trinity Picnic. The Beach Party, while fun for all who took advantage of the sand and water, led to clogged drains and is no longer feasible in our drought environment. We found it difficult to find suitable venues for the Picnic. The solution: bring the picnic to Trinity and include entertainment, food, games and a lot of fun. The goal: involve as many Trinity groups as possible in providing the food, games and fun.

If you miss the sign ups but can help, contact Jerry at jpare@trinitycathedral.org or 916-930-8032.

Can we never escape politics? Christians and the Common Good is subtitled How Faith Intersects with Public Life. Methodist preacher Charles Gutenson asserts that Christians have soured on religious involvement in politics. But the kingdom of God is concerned with justice and communal well-being. He wants us to concentrate on the nature of God so that we can form a reasonable framework for engaging in healthy discussions about how to best serve the common good.

July 28th - Echoes of an Angel
Introduced by Phyllis Ehlert
Echoes of an Angel is the true story of a child who seemed destined for a world of darkness when he became blind at the age of two. But due to his mother's encouragement, he went on to master echolocation - the ability to detect the size and shape of objects through the reflection of sound waves by clicking his tongue.  Ben could ride his bike and even shoot baskets. Sacramento Bee writer Chris Macias and Ben Underwood's mother, Aquanetta Gordon, tell us about the family's unshakable faith in God and each other.

AUGUST 4 - Theology of Young Adult Fiction
Presented by Kelly Mieske
Imagine yourself when you were in 7th grade.  What was your favorite reading spot?  Did you curl up on your bed in your room, decorated somewhere   between childhood and adulthood? When you look down at your hands, what treasure are you holding? Three of my favorite series were: Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time series; C.S. Lewis's  Narnia Chronicles; Lois Lowry's The Giver Quartet. I have revisited these classics as an adult and they are still good reads.  They also have pretty interesting theological themes that we can explore together.

AUGUST 11 - Prince
Presented by Derek Murray
"When Doves Cry: A brief look at the music and spiritual journey of Prince."

Cathedral Cooling Center a Success:
One-Hundred Thirty Five found relief from the heat last week.
by Rev. Steve Skiffington, Cathedral Deacon

The History
Last year the Cathedral was designated as an official Cooling Center by the City and County of Sacramento, and we remain the only church to be so diesignated in the City of Sacramento. That means that whenever the 211 system deems a weather emergency (be it heat or cold) the Cathedral has the option of declaring itself open to give relief to those suffering from the heat or cold.

What Happened Last Week
The Great Hall was open Monday thru Wednesday as a designated Cooling Center from noon till 6pm. Five volunteers responded to the appeal that went out on the E-Blast, allowing us to open: Dee Cary, Amanda Rodman, Eileen Harvey, MeriAngel Enriquez and Jim Reese. On Monday we had 24 guests, Tuesday 43 and Wednesday 68. Those who were here on Wednesday then stayed to join in the Community Dinner, which was overseen by Lyle Gramling.

The Future
Under the oversight of the Deacon, the Cathedral will continue to serve the public during severe weather conditions as determined the Offices of Emergency Services and as space allows.
