"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Trinity youth group members who traveled to the Nez Perce Reservation in Idaho.
Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.  Do you remember hearing this as a child?  Those words have echoed across playgrounds and backyards for generations.  They came back to me again this week.

Six teens and two adults from Trinity's youth group have spent the week working together on the Nez Perce Reservation in Idaho.  We're here to learn more about this culture, ourselves, and God.  It's a busy, intense week.  Our days begin at 7 with breakfast prep, and end after evening prayers at 10.  We aim for lights out at 10:45, sometimes that works, often it doesn't.  Three other church groups are here with us.  Methodist, Presbyterian, and Lutheran, they are from California and Washington.

We've run an afternoon kids program, rehabbed houses, served at an assisted living facility and the Idaho foodbank, planted and weeded in the tribal garden, and worked on a nature trail.  Over and over we've realized that words matter.

That childhood expression, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" is a lie; words are powerful.   Our youth, Alicia Chapa, Michelle Lopez, Gio DelPiero, Makayla Cook, Kathryn Echandia-Monroe, and Colin Smith want to share this with you:

Words can create or destroy.  Words last, sometimes longer than a lifetime.  They help us express ourselves in a way actions can't.  Words can shape someone's life.  We know that when parents talk to their babies, when they use lots of different words, those babies grow up to do better in school.  We know it takes a lot of encouraging works to overcome one negative one.  But, we also know that one word of hope can change a life.

We've learned that names matter.  Names have power, they come with stories.  The name Nez Perce came from white hunters; the Nez Perce call themselves the Nimiipuu.  In a broad sense this means the people; but this name also holds their ancient stories, which shape the way they live each day together.  In their creation story the animals all offered to give up something of themselves for the survival of the new creation, humans.  In turn those humans honored the gifts of all the species.  They continue today, protecting the land and water, and working through their fish hatcheries for the survival of the salmon which continues to feed them.  We are given the privilege of honoring God's work of creation by serving each other; our words and opinions shape others. This is a gift we shouldn't abuse.  We need to see Jesus in all we encounter.

We know that words can stereotype us; reducing us to jokes, marginalizing us or putting us in boxes.  Stereotypes strip people of their dignity and value.  We've all been hurt by words; we know words can last beyond a lifetime.  But we also know words can bring us life and hope.  In John's gospel Jesus was the Word, the living example of the power of words.  Labels don't matter to us.  God's love is endless.  In the Book of Common Prayer our morning prayer services begin with "Lord, open our lips, and our mouths shall proclaim thy praise."  May our words and actions always proclaim God's love for us.

Can we never escape politics? Christians and the Common Good is subtitled How Faith Intersects with Public Life. Methodist preacher Charles Gutenson asserts that Christians have soured on religious involvement in politics. But the kingdom of God is concerned with justice and communal well-being. He wants us to concentrate on the nature of God so that we can form a reasonable framework for engaging in healthy discussions about how to best serve the common good.

Leave it on the "pie table" before the service you attend and join in the celebration afterwards (or beforehand -- for the 12:45 folks).

We really need help slicing and plating the pie slices! If you can help before the service or right after communion, please check in at the kitchen.

July 28th - Echoes of an Angel
Introduced by Phyllis Ehlert
Echoes of an Angel is the true story of a child who seemed destined for a world of darkness when he became blind at the age of two. But due to his mother's encouragement, he went on to master echolocation - the ability to detect the size and shape of objects through the reflection of sound waves by clicking his tongue.  Ben could ride his bike and even shoot baskets. Sacramento Bee writer Chris Macias and Ben Underwood's mother, Aquanetta Gordon, tell us about the family's unshakable faith in God and each other.

AUGUST 4 - Theology of Young Adult Fiction
Presented by Kelly Mieske
Imagine yourself when you were in 7th grade.  What was your favorite reading spot?  Did you curl up on your bed in your room, decorated somewhere   between childhood and adulthood? When you look down at your hands, what treasure are you holding? Three of my favorite series were: Madeline L'Engle's Wrinkle in Time series; C.S. Lewis's  Narnia Chronicles; Lois Lowry's The Giver Quartet. I have revisited these classics as an adult and they are still good reads.  They also have pretty interesting theological themes that we can explore together.

AUGUST 11 - Prince
