"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

by Jerry Paré, Catechumenate Director

A couple of years ago a minister published an article titled "Catechumen...what???" She recognized that many of us do not have the slightest idea of what the "catechumenate" is. So parish catechumenate leaders struggle to find names that describe the process. The catechumenate team at Trinity is no exception.

For the past few years we have called the catechumenate "Growing in Faith." Now that may mean something to you. We occasionally have a blessing (or whatever) in front of the congregation. The Bishop comes for adult baptisms and confirmations at Easter. Participants sometimes come before us at the thanksgiving time on Sunday to thank God and the team for this wonderful experience. And "Growing in Faith" does describe part of the process.

"Growing in Faith" used to be called "Journey with Jesus." We plan to go back to that name. "Journey with Jesus" better captures the essence of the catechumenate. The catechumenate process (not a program and classes, but rather faith formation that matters) is all about journeying with Jesus as the two disciples who meet Jesus on the road to Emmaus did (Luke chpt 24, versus 13 ff). Jesus journeys with them and explains "the things about himself in all the scriptures." When they get to Emmaus, they invite him to share a meal with them. They recognize him in the breaking of the bread. They rush back to Jerusalem to tell others about Jesus. The two disciples take a journey with Jesus.

If "Journey with Jesus" is such a good name, then why didn't we just keep it in the first place? Well... Episcopalians have not been all that comfortable with "Jesus language." We have not been known as Christians who jump up in the middle of a service and say "Thank you, Jesus!" We may be uncomfortable with proclaiming that "Jesus saves!" or that "We belong to Jesus!" Presiding Bishop Michael Curry is changing all of that. In his Southern evangelistic preaching style, he is teaching us to say "Amen, Jesus!" He is pushing us to be excited to be part of the "Jesus movement." He challenges us to proclaim through WORD and DEED that Jesus is our Lord and Savior. He directs us to tell the world of our life long Journey with Jesus. If the Presiding Bishop says it's okay to use such a name, then we stand up and proclaim it!

The catechumenate is all about learning what it is to travel with Jesus. That is why we will return to the name "JOURNEY WITH JESUS" for this process of conversion. So come on the journey! Right now we are meeting for Bible study on Sunday afternoons from 3 - 5 in Room C. In the fall we will invite you to begin or continue this intentional Journey with Jesus.

Catechumen...what?? It's a Journey with Jesus. It's a wild, challenging, rewarding journey. It's a journey of discovery and renewal. Try it; you'll like it.

Facilities Management Update

Exciting News! The cathedral painting has begun. Starting Tuesday, May 31, the painters began scraping old paint, while Trinity volunteers and staff cleared foliage from painting surfaces, and cleaned out the breezeway. We discovered that most of the rain gutters on the east side of the cathedral are rusted out, so those will be replaced and then painted.

We are in the planning stages of a landscaping clean up day.  If many people volunteer a few hours it will quickly look great! Look for the announcement soon.

Cultivating choral transplants across countries and generations, VAE nurtures a musical garden of human experience, through the common grounds of life, death, faith, serenity, love, and dreams.

Collaborating in this program will be ceremonial sound practitioner René Jenkins, who uses ancient indigenous instruments to harvest timeless soundscapes of magical dimensions.

TREE Tip...

TREE Logo TREE Tip
by Ann Rothschild

TREE needs you  - if you have financial/investment experience.

On Wednesday June 8, Fossil Free California held a rally at the headquarters of the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) to lobby for their divestment from Fossil Fuels.  This includes coal mining and the appalling effects of Mountain Top Removal mining, and Fracking for Natural Gas, which has proven worse for the global warming atmosphere than car exhaust,  and threatens water sources and earthquake faults.
Ann and Lyle were there-note TREE are Active!

TREE still needs a financial expert to help our efforts to persuade Trinity and the Northern California Diocese to divest from fossil fuels.  Seems like a no-brainer, but there is a process, and we need to present a coherent and cogent proposal at Diocesan Convention...so if you are a financial professional who can advise us, please contact Chaplain Grant Bakewell at chaplaingrant@gmail.com .

Watch this space for TREE's film series coming up on Thursday evenings, August 18, 25, and Sept 1, as part of Thursday Night at the Cathedral's Summer programs.

Donation and Volunteer Opportunities...

Annie, Kobe and Chad Barajas

Kobe Barajas and His Family

Need Your Help

Kobe Barajas has a terminal brain tumor. He is 13 years old and has been dealing with brain cancer since he was 9. He is not expected to live more than 6 more months. His mother is Annie Barajas who attended Trinity with her parents Rane'e and John Les Callett in the 1990s. Annie has had to quit work to take care of Kobe and his twin brother Chad. The family has less income than the rent right now.

They are getting help from the River City Food Bank for food for the family. You can send cash donations to Steve Skiffington's discretionary account or put them in the offering plate on Sunday marked "For Kobe". You can also help by donating gas cards or grocery gift cards for Safeway or Save Mart. They can be placed in the Floyd School box and I will pick them up and give them to the family. Please put gift cards in an envelope and write Barajas Family on the envelope.

Thank you so much for helping this family.

Blessings,
Canon Nancy Tennyson
