"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

Last Sunday we had about 70 children in the Great Hall participating in our Pentecost celebration!  I was teaching the Soul of Money class so I wasn't able to witness it, but I heard it was wonderful.  Every Sunday we have parents with young children using the new area we created in the West Transept with carpet and toys.  Two years ago our parish survey indicated that serving families and children should be a priority for us.  I am pleased to report that the hard work of the Rev. Kathy Hopner and the many volunteer parents and others is paying off.  The number of children participating in our programs, and the level of commitment of parish families is increasing.   The two other priorities in the survey were to serve young adults and to create more opportunities to connect, such as in small groups.  Through the leadership of the Rev. Megan Anderson and The Rev. Pamela Anderson those ministries are growing as well.

While the recent survey has helped guide our ministry choices these past two years, the vestry has realized they need to do some more specific planning to shape our future. Our weekend attendance and our pledging has been declining.  We have many great things happening, but I think we could be stronger with a greater focus and intentionality.  The vestry is exploring entering into a deliberate process of strategic planning.  We have been operating without a strategic plan for the 10 years I have been here and I wholeheartedly support this effort.  Trinity Cathedral is a remarkable congregation with a great deal of energy.  We need planning to help us guide and focus that energy so we can better serve our members and neighbors.  While we are still working out the details, I expect the planning process to include many opportunities for members of the congregation to be involved and offer their input.

On a related note, I just came from the ground breaking ceremony for B Street Theater across the street from Trinity Cathedral.  Construction should take about 18 months.  Our proximity to B Street Theater will create new ministry opportunities for us and I am eager for us to not only be neighbors but also partners in serving our neighborhood.

Blessings,
Brian

Investment Advisor needed: Breaking Free from Fossil Fuels.

I borrow this term from 350.org who are conducting a week of global activism to urge leaders and industry to "break free" from dependence on oil and coal. The movement is growing: Chico State, San Francisco State, and Stanford Universities have all voted to divest from fossil fuels
( www.uwosh.edu), as has the CalSTRS (Teachers Retirement) Board ( www.reuters.com/article/california-pensions-divestment-idUSL2N15J08A).

TREE members have asked the diocese for the last two years about divesting, but it is a complicated issue. So we are looking for a volunteer professional financial expert to help us move forward on this project. Is anyone available to work with Grant Bakewell in an advisory capacity? We do not expect hours of work - guidance and information mostly.

The Reading Corner...

There's always something new in our library, which you can check out on the SECOND Sunday of the month.     ~~Phyllis Ehlert

Isn't it the musical "Caberet" that has the line, "Money, money, money"? The library has the book used in our Thursday night class, The Soul of Money, which the Dean read a year ago and wanted to share. Money was a big item with Jesus. Supposedly He talked about it sixty-eight times, more than any other topic. Yet another book we have that addresses money is People over Profit. Dale Partridge says that there is a new kind of innovative entrepreneur with a business model that puts the soul back in business through an accountable, compassionate economy.

Thursday Night at the Cathedral (TNAC)
Classes at 7:00pm

Dog Whistle Politics: As a congregation, we just finished a series of "Sacred Conversations for Racial Justice." This had a tremendous impact on our community. As a continuation of this conversation, Deacon Steve Skiffington and Deacon Tina Campbell will lead a book study on Ian Haney López' book entitled Dog Whistle Politics. Dog-whistle politics is political messaging employing coded language that appears to mean one thing to the general population but has a different meaning for a targeted subgroup. The analogy is to a dog whistle, whose high-frequency whistle is heard by dogs but inaudible to humans. This class will discuss racist policies in American through the lens of code words.

The Soul of Money The Soul of Money: The Soul of Money is an enjoyable, inspiring book inviting us to live our lives with gratitude and a sense of sufficiency. We are constantly fed messages of scarcity and insufficiency. Lynn Twist uses moving stories from her life and her work to look at the power money has over our lives. While focusing on our relationship with money, this book is really inviting us to live all of our lives with more joy, gratitude and connection to one another. Pamela Anderson, Vaughn Wolff and Bruce Roy will be leading a book study on this in the Conference Room.
This Sunday - May 22
Camp Galilee

Family Promise Family Promise
Returns to Trinity
May 29-June 4, 2016

Trinity will be hosting the homeless families of Family
Promise Sacramento for a week, beginning Sunday, May
29 and running thru June 4. We need volunteers to
bring or prepare dinner at the Great Hall, serve as even-
ing hosts and clean up afterwards, and spend the night
at the Hall to make sure the families are safe and com-
fortable. We also need people to help set up the cots on
the Sunday they arrive, and to help take down and load
the cots onto the trailer and wash the bedding on the
Sunday they leave.

This particular week will be especially difficult as I am out of town for a family emergency and can't be at Trinity to help out. While MeriAngel Enriquez, co-coordinator for the minis-
try, and Deacon Steve Skiffington will be at Trinity to
run things during host week, they will need lots of help
and support. Please consider signing up for an hour or
two on one evening that week, or bring your sleeping
bag and spend the night. The volunteer sign up poster is
up in the Great Hall. Questions, concerns? Contact me at
ehtaniguchi@gmail.com or text/voice mail 916-708-4295.

Coordinator, Family Promise

Sacramento Pride

The annual Sacramento Pride will be on Saturday, June 4, on the Capitol Mall. Trinity will be participating in the parade and will host an informational booth. Please contact Steve Skiffington, Megan Anderson or Rod Thomas, if you wish to participate or assist in this event. We will be hosting a pre-parade communion service starting at 10:30 in the parade assembly area at 3rd and N Streets. The parade is free and entrance to the festival is $10 per person. Children ages 5 and under get in free.
Small Group Bible StudyBible
by Jerry Paré

Members of Trinity have expressed a yearning for two things: more small, faith based discussion groups and more Bible study opportunities. We are combining the two in a Sunday afternoon opportunity for small group Bible study. The group will meet from 3:00 - 5:00PM on Sundays beginning June 5.

"Bible study" can mean numerous things for people. Some are seeking an academic study that involves a scholarly approach to the Scriptures. A passage is read with an eye to the historical context, the Hebrew or Greek meaning of words and other "exegetical" tools. Usually the question of how this passage impacts on our understanding today is also discussed. This is an approach used in Education for Ministry (EfM) as well as our "Introduction to the New Testament" and "Introduction to the Old Testament" classes.

For some "Bible Study" means choosing a book of the Bible to read and discussing what each section and the entire book means to us. Morey Lloyd has led classes like this. One of the recent ones focused on the Book of Ruth. Another approach is to choose a topic such as the parables of Jesus or God's justice as portrayed in a section or book of the Bible. The group reads the passage or passages chosen for the meeting and discuss what they have read.

The approach that will be used in the small groups that meet on Sunday afternoon is called Lectio Divina. Lectio Divina comes to us through Benedictine spirituality. It can be practiced individually or in a group. Trinity's clergy often use this practice when preparing sermons. Lectio Divina is a guided reflection during which a Scripture passage is read at least three times. After the first reading there is a question of "what word or phrase stood out for you in this passage?" After the second reading, the question is "What do you hear in this reading that impacts on your life right now?" The third reading is followed by the question "What is God calling me to through this reading?"

Lectio Divina takes elements from numerous other methods of Bible Study. You don't have to be a "Scripture scholar" to reflect on the Scriptures. But this method is much more than sharing feelings and questions about the Scripture passage. It is a method of discernment for each person in the group and for the entire group.

Come and check it out starting on June 5 at 3:00 PM. Contact Kelly Mieske (916-719-8149916-719-8149) for more information.

Donation and Volunteer Opportunities...

PilgrimageSAC
(formerly known as Safe Ground)

Did you know that Trinity hosts a weekly dinner for our homeless friends and neighbors each Wednesday at 6:00? In addition to the Community Dinners on the first three Wednesdays, we are privileged to be part of a multi-congregation network of churches that make up PilgrimageSAC.

On the fourth Wednesday of every month, in the Great Hall, we prepare and serve a hearty and nutritious hot meal complete with local produce and delicious desserts, as well as provide a safe and comfortable place to sleep for the night. Over the course of just one year, Trinity Cathedral is a welcoming resting place for over 1000 guests.

This particular ministry opportunity is at once; inspiring, fulfilling and always fun. Our volunteers are an eclectic mix of Trinity
Harry K., a long time Wednesday night volunteer, keeping an eye on John Kraynak
members and folks from our surrounding community who all share the same spirit of hospitality and the willingness to give their time. Please consider joining us in the future. You can contact jessie@trinitycathedral.org to sign up for a shift or to ask any questions you may have.  Otherwise, feel free to stop by the Great Hall any Wednesday after 5:00. You'll be glad you did.

Annie, Kobe and Chad Barajas

Kobe Barajas and His Family

Need Your Help

Kobe Barajas has a terminal brain tumor. He is 13 years old and has been dealing with brain cancer since he was 9. He is not expected to live more than 6 more months. His mother is Annie Barajas who attended Trinity with her parents Rane'e and John Les Callett in the 1990s. Annie has had to quit work to take care of Kobe and his twin brother Chad. The family has less income than the rent right now.

They are getting help from the River City Food Bank for food for the family. You can send cash donations to Steve Skiffington's discretionary account or put them in the offering plate on Sunday marked "For Kobe". You can also help by donating gas cards or grocery gift cards for Safeway or Save Mart. They can be placed in the Floyd School box and I will pick them up and give them to the family. Please put gift cards in an envelope and write Barajas Family on the envelope.

Thank you so much for helping this family.

Blessings,
Canon Nancy Tennyson
