"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

Last Sunday afternoon I was invited to speak to a youth group in a neighboring Episcopal Church about the church's move toward marriage equality. I was impressed by the quality and depth of the questions asked by the teens. They were very engaged. Afterward I learned that there were a couple of teens present who were struggling with their sexuality and the anti-gay messages they receive from other Christians. It was heartwarming to learn that my comments representing the welcome of the Episcopal Church was helpful.  The experience reminded me that there are many people who still feel shunned and that we need to be vigilant in our welcome and our stance of inclusion.

In a similar vein, Deacon Steve Skiffington and I just met with the leaders of the Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus. They are wanting to thank us for our fight for marriage equality by singing at the Cathedral. We are planning a service on June 5, the Sunday of Gay Pride Weekend, at 4:00pm. The service will be near the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court's marriage equality decision and the Episcopal Church's authorization of marriage rites for all couples. The service will use the new marriage liturgy as its basic structure, it will honor married couples and will include spectacular music.  I hope you are able to join us.

Blessings,
Brian

Flower stickers...

are needed by May First!

If you have any of the flower or cute animal stickers that come in donation requests for charity, such as Easter Seals, Wild Life Foundation or other charity, we can use them!

For Mother's Day we give each child in the school a bag, which is 360 in the elementary school and 50 in the preschool, to decorate to use for their Mother's Day gift.

We have assembled many dye cuts for this purpose, thanks to the efforts of Gladys Hustler. Since we have over 400 bags to decorate I thought we might use those stickers to stretch the dye cuts  for the bags. Please bring your stickers  to church on Sunday. You can leave them at the Floyd School table or put them in the Floyd School box in the office.

We need to have the stickers by May 1st to take to the school. Thank you for your help.

 Blessings,
Canon Nancy Tennyson

Report from Trinity's ACT Group

Thanks to all the congregants who came out to attend the Area Congregations Together (ACT) Delegate's Assembly at This is Pentecost Ministries church in the south area on April 12!

We had wonderful representation from Trinity. Attendees heard about the various issues that ACT member congregations in the Sacramento area have been actively tackling over the past year, from working with the schools, to advocating for more access to mental health services, to working on issues of mass incarceration and speaking up about our county's use of local jails to deny basic human rights to undocumented individuals who have been arrested for minor offenses. We learned that our county actually has a contract from the federal government to hold beds for this population, who once identified, are then deported by immigration authorities.  As a part of the presentation, our joint local organizing committee (LOC) reported on its work related to homelessness.

Almost four years ago both Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and St. Mark's United Methodist conducted listening campaigns to measure concerns and issues.  Both Local Organizing Committees were surprised to find the issue of homelessness emerged as the number one concern in both congregations.   While both congregations were and continue to be involved in direct service to meet the basic human needs of homeless individuals, we were interested in "going up the river" to look at the causes of homelessness and what could be done to end homelessness in Sacramento. Follow this link to read the complete report on our work which we summarized at the Assembly.

Thursday Night at the Cathedral (TNAC)
Classes at 7:00pm

Dog Whistle Politics: As a congregation, we just finished a series of "Sacred Conversations for Racial Justice." This had a tremendous impact on our community. As a continuation of this conversation, Deacon Steve Skiffington and Deacon Tina Campbell will lead a book study on Ian Haney López' book entitled Dog Whistle Politics. Dog-whistle politics is political messaging employing coded language that appears to mean one thing to the general population but has a different meaning for a targeted subgroup. The analogy is to a dog whistle, whose high-frequency whistle is heard by dogs but inaudible to humans. This class will discuss racist policies in American through the lens of code words.

The Soul of Money The Soul of Money: The Soul of Money is an enjoyable, inspiring book inviting us to live our lives with gratitude and a sense of sufficiency. We are constantly fed messages of scarcity and insufficiency. Lynn Twist uses moving stories from her life and her work to look at the power money has over our lives. While focusing on our relationship with money, this book is really inviting us to live all of our lives with more joy, gratitude and connection to one another. Pamela Anderson, Vaughn Wolff and Bruce Roy will be leading a book study on this in the Conference Room.

Book Study with Dean Baker
Meets in the Assembly Area at 10:15am

The Soul of Money The Soul of Money is an enjoyable, inspiring book inviting us to live our lives with gratitude and a sense of sufficiency. We are constantly fed messages of scarcity and insufficiency. Lynn Twist uses moving stories from her life and her work to look at the power money has over our lives. I read this book last fall and was eager to share it with the congregation. While focusing on our relationship with money, this book is really inviting us to live all of our lives with more joy, gratitude and connection to one another. Family Promise Family Promise
Emergency Host Week
May 8-13, 2016

Due to a massive remodel and repair project, one of our sister churches in the Family Promise network was unable to take in the families during the week of May 8: so with our usual panache, Trinity Cathedral stepped up and agreed to host the families for six days. We need folks to prepare or bring dinner at 6 p.m.; greet the families, serve them dinner and clean up the kitchen; and stay overnight to make sure they are safe and comfortable through the night. To sign up, look for the Family Promise poster for volunteers in the Great Hall. In addition, the Sunday the families arrive, May 8, is Mother's Day, so we'd love to do something special for the moms coming to stay with us. We need small items to fill three or four gift bags: sample-sized personal care item like hand and skin lotion, tissue packets, scented soaps, small notebooks with a pen, things your mother would enjoy! Please drop off donations at the cathedral office during regular hours, or contact Eleanor Taniguchi at EleanorT@trinitycathedral.org, text 916-708-4295.

Join Charis at the
Walk to Cure Arthritis
Sunday, May 1st, 1:45pm at Raley Field!

It was at my first Arthritis Walk that I realized the meaning and power of sharing my journey with supportive people who would walk beside me, and each year I am emotionally overwhelmed by this event that is dedicated to help people, like me, fighting severe arthritis.

On Sunday, May 1st at 1:45 pm I will walk in my 4th annual Walk to Cure Arthritis, a fundraising event for the Arthritis Foundation. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis, one of over 100 forms of arthritis. AS is a severe auto-inflammatory disease that primarily affects my spine; it is very painful, treatments are expensive, and there is no cure.

It would mean a lot for you join me at the event. It is free to register and participate; follow this link to read my story, then you can select "Join my team" on the right side of the screen underneath the 'Donate' button.

My cell phone number is 252-634-8783 so you can find me day of, or text/call to ask any questions. Follow this link for event details.

Kobe Barajas and His Family

Need Your Help

Kobe Barajas has a terminal brain tumor. He is 13 years old and has been dealing with brain cancer since he was 9. He is not expected to live more than 6 more months. His mother is Annie Barajas who attended Trinity with her parents Rane'e and John Les Callett in the 1990s. Annie has had to quit work to take care of Kobe and his twin brother Chad. The family has less income than the rent right now.

They are getting help from the River City Food Bank for food for the family. You can send cash donations to Steve Skiffington's discretionary account or put them in the offering plate on Sunday marked "For Kobe". You can also help by donating gas cards or grocery gift cards for Safeway or Save Mart. They can be placed in the Floyd School box and I will pick them up and give them to the family. Please put gift cards in an envelope and write Barajas Family on the envelope.

Thank you so much for helping this family.

Blessings,
Canon Nancy Tennyson
