"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

This weekend we have two memorial services.  A service for Alex Gunn will be tomorrow, Friday, night at 7:00 pm.  There will be a reception in the Great Hall following the service. On Saturday we will have a memorial service for Harry Katzakian at 11:00 am, with a reception in the Great Hall. Both of these men were beloved members of Trinity Cathedral and I hope you will be able to join us.

This Sunday we will have a guest preacher. The Rev. Will Scott, program director for Interfaith Power and Light, an organization that advocates for people of faith to respond to global warming, will be preaching at our 7:30am, 9:00am and 11:15am services.  The following Sunday TREE (Trinity Respecting Earth and Environment) will be holding its annual Earth Day Fair.

This past Tuesday a group of 16 of us attended the Sacramento ACT (Area Congregations Together) Member Assembly. It was held at Pentecostal church in South Sacramento and included rousing gospel singing as well as moving talks from people involved in racial and economic justice work in our region. It was an inspiring evening and I look forward to more invitations for us to be involved with this great organization.  Sacramento ACT provides a way for us to partner with a diverse group of congregations and combine efforts to improve our community. You can read about some of the work of Sacramento ACT here:http://www.sacact.org/what-we-are-doing

Blessings,
Brian

Thursday Night at the Cathedral
 on April 14

Compline - 6:00pm
Dinner - 6:15pm
 Classes - 7:00pm

Thursday Night at the Cathedral (TNAC)
Classes at 7:00pm

Dog Whistle Politics: As a congregation, we just finished a series of "Sacred Conversations for Racial Justice." This had a tremendous impact on our community. As a continuation of this conversation, Deacon Steve Skiffington and Deacon Tina Campbell will lead a book study on Ian Haney López' book entitled Dog Whistle Politics. Dog-whistle politics is political messaging employing coded language that appears to mean one thing to the general population but has a different meaning for a targeted subgroup. The analogy is to a dog whistle, whose high-frequency whistle is heard by dogs but inaudible to humans. This class will discuss racist policies in American through the lens of code words.

The Soul of Money The Soul of Money: Vaughn Wolff will lead this class. While we honor Lynn Twist's story by reading her book, The Soul of Money, the challenge is for each of us to affect our culture by making changes in our attitudes, beliefs, vocabulary and behavior. This can be less scary when we feel supported and then with each person discovering the Truth about our Source and our True Nature, the little changes we make become hallmarks, approved by no one else, but the Indwelling God. This will be an opportunity to dig deeper into our own beliefs and experiences, to break clouds of darkness of fear and lack, which ultimately mirrors how we act and react in our closest relationships. Come join Vaughn's class on Thursday nights at 7pm in the Cathedral Book Shop.

The Soul of Money: The Soul of Money is an enjoyable, inspiring book inviting us to live our lives with gratitude and a sense of sufficiency. We are constantly fed messages of scarcity and insufficiency. Lynn Twist uses moving stories from her life and her work to look at the power money has over our lives. While focusing on our relationship with money, this book is really inviting us to live all of our lives with more joy, gratitude and connection to one another. Pamela Anderson and team will be leading a book study on this in the Conference Room on Thursday evenings at 7pm.

Book Study with Dean Baker
Meets in the Assembly Area at 10:15am

The Soul of Money The Soul of Money is an enjoyable, inspiring book inviting us to live our lives with gratitude and a sense of sufficiency. We are constantly fed messages of scarcity and insufficiency. Lynn Twist uses moving stories from her life and her work to look at the power money has over our lives. I read this book last fall and was eager to share it with the congregation. While focusing on our relationship with money, this book is really inviting us to live all of our lives with more joy, gratitude and connection to one another. I will be leading a book study on Sunday mornings from April 10 to May 8.         - Dean Baker
David Link's
benefit organ concert for NorCal AIDS Cycle
Sunday, April 17th at 4:00 pm

Please join Canon David Link for the Fourth Annual NorCal AIDS Cycle benefit organ concert at Trinity Cathedral. NorCal AIDS Cycle is Northern California's premier fund-raising event for local agencies providing services to those in our community suffering from HIV/AIDS. To raise funds for NCAC, Canon Link will be working both the organ pedals and the bicycle pedals! The program will include (click here for a full program and bio):

  • Toccata & Fugue in d minor (BWV 565) - J. S. Bach
  • Three chorale settings for Eastertide - J. S. Bach
  • Two short pieces - Samuel Wesley
  • Tuba Tune in D - C. S. Lang
  • Cantilena (Sonata 11, opus 148) - Josef Rheinberger
  • Fantasia on "Tonus Peregrinus" (Sonata 4, opus 98) - Josef Rheinberger
  • Fidelis (Four pieces for organ) - Percy Whitlock
  • Pim's Toccata (1978) - Alan Wilson

The concert is played on the Cathedral's twenty-nine rank Reuter Pipe organ, which has recently undergone a thorough restoration and enlargement. The antiphonal "Processional" division has just been completed by Schoenstein and Co organ builders, and is stunning!

The suggested minimum donation is $10, but donations of any size, large or small will be gratefully accepted, and will make a big impact in our community.

Trinity Cathedral is located at 2620 Capitol Avenue at 27th Street in mid-town Sacramento. Parking is usually available on the street (FREE on Sunday), or in the Sutter Garage at 27th and N Streets ($5 flat rate on weekends).

Mama Dragon Story Project
Mormon mothers who love their LGBT children
Monday, April 18th, 7-8:30pm
Trinity Episcopal Cathedral
27th & Capitol

The Mama Dragons are a newly formed group of mothers of LGBT children who have come together to share their stories in the hope of making the world a safer place for their children.  The stories are told via large photo boards, each bearing a portrait of the mother and her story. Jana's story can be read by following this link. 70 Mama Dragons, covering six western states, have shared their stories since January 2015.

The event begins with a tour of the exhibit and ends with several Mama Dragons telling their story. This will be a deeply moving evening and is offered in the hope that their story will lead to greater love and acceptance of LGBT children everywhere, especially among worshiping communities.

As you know, the cathedral has supported the Family Promise program for years. Several times a year we host homeless families for a week at a time, giving them a safe place to stay with good food as well. Eleanor Taniguchi and MeriAngel Enriquez are the cathedral's coordinators for the program.

Each year the cathedral purchases a table at the Family Promise Annual Dinner fundraiser. This year we've purchased a table for eight and have five places available if you would like to join us. It's a great way to find out more about the program and to meet people from other Sacramento congregations who are also part of the Family Promise network.

If you'd like to attend, please contact Deacon Steve (text: 916-204-4955 or deaconskiff@gmail.com) and let him know how many seats you would like to reserve. The tickets are free to you and are on a first-come-first-served basis.

Women's Retreat

The annual women's retreat will be held April 29-May 1, 2016 at Mercy Center Auburn.  This year's theme is "Finding Sanctuary:  Anytime, Any Place, Any Where."  We will look at ways that we can create mental headspace in the middle of chaos to create sanctuary so that we can reconnect with God and find deep peace.  The cost is $175.00. If you would like to come for the day on Saturday, the cost is $34.75 and that includes the lunch. If you need a scholarship, please speak with Pamela Anderson. There are only 25 slots and they are filling fast so be sure to sign up soon. For your convenience, you can register online through Eventbrite using this link. Or you can register with the front desk office volunteer Monday-Friday. If you write a check, please write "Women's Retreat" in the memo line.

Additionally, on select days, you can sign up on Sunday mornings in the Great Hall at the Women's Retreat table. If you have any questions, please contact Pamela Anderson at Pamela@trinitycathedral.org. Come join the fun!
EfM EfM Sign-Ups and Send-Off!

All are invited to attend the diocesan Education for Ministry (EfM) graduation at Trinity, May 6 at 7 p.m., to give a cheerful send-off to this year's graduates (including four from Trinity) and learn more about the program.  And all are invited to support Trinity's EfM program by making a donation toward EfM scholarships (note "EfM Scholarship fund" on your check or contribution envelope).

Anyone interested in participating in EfM in 2016-17 can find general info on the web, and contact any of the current mentors (Loren WeatherlyCarol Savoie, or Georgianna Pfost) on how to sign up. There will also be an informational meeting on Sunday, May 22 at 10:15 in the Assembly Area.
Family Promise Family Promise
Emergency Host Week
May 8-13, 2016

Due to a massive remodel and repair project, one of our sister churches in the Family Promise network was unable to take in the families during the week of May 8: so with our usual panache, Trinity Cathedral stepped up and agreed to host the families for six days. This is in addition to our scheduled four host weeks for 2016, so we are in a crunch for volunteers! We need folks to prepare or bring dinner at 6 p.m.; greet the families, serve them dinner and clean up the kitchen; and stay overnight to make sure they are safe and comfortable through the night. To sign up, look for the Family Promise poster for volunteers in the Great Hall. In addition, the Sunday the families arrive, May 8, is Mother's Day, so we'd love to do something special for the moms coming to stay with us. We need small items to fill three or four gift bags: sample-sized personal care item like hand and skin lotion, tissue packets, scented soaps, small notebooks with a pen, things your mother would enjoy! Please drop off donations at the cathedral office during regular hours, or contact Eleanor Taniguchi at EleanorT@trinitycathedral.org, text 916-708-4295.
