"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

For the past several years I have been developing a relationship with Imam Mohamed Azeez.  He is a remarkable religious leader and in many ways has been the face of Islam for our region.  We are blessed to have Imam Azeez preach at our 9:00 AM service and be available for a forum afterward.  He will not be preaching at 7:30AM or 11:15AM.  You can learn more about Imam Azeez here.

I would like to thank the Vestry for their hard work this past week at the Vestry Retreat. Canon Andrea McMillin was a great facilitator. The Vestry has decided to work on strategic planning with an emphasis on growth.  I'm grateful for the prayers of the congregation while the Vestry was working hard at the Mercy Center in Auburn.

Blessings,

Brian

Creeds from the Growing in Faith Candidates...
During a retreat focused on the Apostles' Creed, we ask our catechumens and candidates to write their own creed. We do this because these candidates, and all of us, will proclaim our Baptismal Covenant at the Easter Vigil and on Easter Sunday. During Lent we will share with you the creeds that the candidates composed during the retreat.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I do not believe I know that God is the creator of all the Universe.
I do not believe I know Jesus was his son, sent to free the world of its sins.
I do not believe I know the Holy Spirit is all around me guiding me down the right path.
I do not believe I know that all mankind was created equal and is accepted by God as we are.
I do not believe I know I must forgive others as I ask for forgiveness.
I do not believe I know walking with God isn't always easy, but it is always righteous.
I do not believe I know I will achieve everlasting life in the Kingdom of Heaven, along with my fellow man.
I do not believe these things, I know them to be true.
A Calling for Stewardship
Our Stewardship Committee is seeking volunteers to serve on our committee for the coming year. If you are not familiar with Stewardship, here is a description:
Stewardship is about being grateful, responsible stewards of the gifts we receive from God. The tradition of giving back to God and to the church comes from the Biblical practice of "tithing," which means to give back a tenth of our earnings to God (Numbers 18:26). The Episcopal Church sees stewardship as more than simply contributing money to the church; it's also about contributing time and talents, and volunteering for ministry and mission. It's about reaching out to build relationships from a perspective of abundance instead of scarcity.
If you are interested in learning more and willing to help build relationships through education, planned giving and our annual appeal, please contact Rod Thomas at rthomas0604@gmail.com or call 502-558-2497.
Hiking
Hiking Guild Special Hike: SUTTER BUTTES
Saturday, March 19, 2016
Ridge Hike - East Shaeffer Ranch
This is a special hike in a deeply spiritual place that has touched the hearts of all in our group. It was the last time that we had the pleasure of the company of Alan Meyer on one of our outings. There are many hikes throughout the Buttes, rated from 1 boot to 6 boots [1 being easiest: 3-4 miles, less that 600 feet elevation].   The beauty of this area is difficult to express. You will return to Sacramento with a renewed sense of wonder.
You have to make advance reservations for this hike, as the landowners who allow us to go on their properties try to limit the impact on their ranches. Also, there is a cost of $35.00 per person, which must be paid as indicated below to secure your reservation.   Money goes to pay for the docents who lead the hikes; help the landowner defray administrative cost [insurance]; and support the Middle Mountain Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to keep the Buttes from being developed commercially.
Because of the drive to the Buttes, the time for gathering at the cathedral and departure are changed. Make sure your alarm clock is adjusted accordingly.
Otherwise, same Rules:
  • 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month:
  • Meet on Cathedral steps at 6:45am for a 7:00am departure:
  • Bring plenty of water, snacks and a sack lunch.
  • Prepare to have good fellowship and a good walk in God's Great Outdoors.
This is a special hike for members of our group of hikers.
Send your check for $35 per person made out to:
         Middle Mountain Foundation
         PO Box 3613, Yuba City, CA 95992
         March 19, 2016
I am having Middle Mountain hold open 18 spaces for this hike out of a total of 23 allowed. When those spaces are gone, you will have to wait until next year to see the buttes.   So please, if you want to go one this hike, sign up ASAP. Your check should Memo Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Group.  Please e-mail me and let me know you are signed up so I can keep track.
George Johnston
Mercy Center, Auburn Women's Retreat
The annual Women's Retreat will be held April 29-May 1, 2016 at Mercy Center Auburn.  This year's theme is "Finding Sanctuary:  Anytime, Any Place, Any Where."  We will look at ways that we can create mental headspace in the middle of chaos to create sanctuary so that we can reconnect with God and find deep peace.  The cost is $175.00 - please speak with Pamela Anderson if you need a scholarship. You can sign up for this event online through Eventbrite or sign up with the office by writing a check.
This Sunday, March 13, a Women's Retreat registration table will be set up in the Great Hall for participants to sign up using their credit card or a check.  If you want to come for the day on Saturday, the cost is $34.75 and it includes the lunch.  Come join the fun!
Gas, Bicycles, and Plastic.
by Ann Rothschild.
With the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage facility leak in Los Angeles having spewed 107,000 tons (that's TONS) of methane into the atmosphere, it's enough to make one give up daily efforts to conserve gas and water. Heck-the facility "released the greenhouse gas equivalent of 572,000 cars in a year," (Sacramento Bee, 2-26-16). What's the use of my bicycling around the neighborhood in the face of this and other disasters? Well, I do enjoy cycling, it gives me exercise and fresh air, and I chat with neighbors and appreciate the blossoms on the trees. I guess it's worth it. Besides, I must keep on keeping on for my own self-respect.
It's important to seek out the good news too. Remember the Great Pacific Garbage Patch-that huge area of plastic rubbish the size of Texas in the Pacific Ocean, (and yes, there is one such patch in every ocean)?   All the rubbish has been swirled together by the ocean currents. Well, scientists have been sounding the alarm on this for 20 years. One well-publicized solution is Dutch engineering student Boyan Slat's plastic-eating machine (www.theoceancleanup.com) suspended by nets on a long boom across miles of sea. Hooray- thank you, Boyan. However, critics' arguments are sobering: ocean pollution activist group 5 Gyres Institute asserts that much of the plastic is not in large bottles and bits that can be swept up by nets, but consists of clouds of microplastics, shredded to small grains by wave action, sunlight, and organisms, that are at various depths, are too small for Slat's machine, and yet deadly to sea life.
Environmental writer Chris Clarke points out that long booms with nets to catch plastic rubbish may work in calm waters, but will be broken up by stormy seas. The nets stand to capture sea life as well, migratory species of fish will be endangered, and, anyway, plastic recyclers are overwhelmed with too much plastic, which does not recycle well-it has to be "down-cycled" to lesser grade plastic. His essay explains this and more-check it out at
This is a fascinating on-going challenge to our scientists. In the meantime, please continue to avoid plastic bags and packaging whenever possible and recycle at all times, and never, never buy those single plastic water bottles!
NorCal AIDS Cycle
With dry weather prevailing for most of February, it seemed a good time to jump-start my training for NorCal AIDS Cycle... now just ten weeks away. I had worked out a nice thirty-four mile loop ride, using the new Cosumnes Boulevard extension, heading down to the town of Franklin, and then heading back on River Road along the Sacramento River. Unfortunately, fate had other ideas. There is a spot where Franklin Boulevard crosses some S P railroad tracks at a pretty sharp angle. I tried to get perpendicular to make a safe crossing, but my front wheel slid into the gap next to the track, and I came down on the pavement pretty hard.
The result was a lot of shoulder and neck pain, but nothing broken it appears. But a month later I'm still pretty sore. So it has cramped my training a little bit. But two weeks later, with a multi-day bike tour on the horizon, I nervously got back on the bike, and started training again.
Fund-raising has been in full swing, and donations are starting to come in. For the previous five years, I have been one of the top fundraisers for NCAC. I really don't want to be competitive about it, but I really can't help it! My biggest fund-raising event each Spring is a benefit pipe organ recital at Trinity Cathedral. This year it will be on Sunday, April 17th at 4:00 pm. More details can be found here: NCAC benefit organ recital  I hope you will be able to come for an afternoon of great music on our newly restored Cathedral organ, and also to support this excellent cause.
Once again, I am asking you to help me make my goal of raising eight-thousand dollars for NorCal AIDS Cycle. This worthy organization supports organizations who support our neighbors suffering from HIV/AIDS, and helping to prevent new infections. I am deeply appreciative of everyone who has supported me in this worthy cause!
