"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

Welcome to Lent!  This is my favorite season in the church year.  I appreciate the invitation to do something different for forty days -- to take on a new spiritual practice.  I have done lots of different things over the years.  Usually I commit to a meditation or prayer practice.  I fasted from watching or listening to the news one Lent. I realized I was using the news as a way to avoid silence, so I turned it off.  My first winter in Sun Valley Idaho my Lenten practice was to ski every day. It was important that I become a good skier in short order if I was to be respected in that small town of expert skiers -- at least that's what I told myself. There were days when the skiing was miserable, or I couldn't go when the lifts were open so I cross country skied at dawn instead. More than learning how to ski, however, this was a way to immerse myself deeply in my new community.

I invite you to a holy Lent. In last Sunday's sermon I taught about prayer and mentioned the site I use for Morning Prayer: dailyoffice.org. They offer a new morning and evening prayer service each day. A parishioner messaged me yesterday to tell me she found a Daily Office app for her phone!

I also want to mention our successful Ashes to Go yesterday.  For three hours in the middle of the day, teams of clergy and lay persons were at four different locations around Sacramento, offering ashes and prayers. They served over 150 people! You can see some of my pictures by clicking here.

Volunteers Needed...
Two Early Birds Needed

Pilgrimage Sac (formerly Safe Ground Pilgrimage) needs two early risers to serve breakfast to our overnight guests on the 4th Thursday of every month. Duties include making coffee and a simple breakfast (usually oatmeal). We need two people that are available from 6:30am to 8:00am to serve breakfast and clean the kitchen. If you are available and interested, please contact co-coordinator Jessie Orgambide at jorgambide@gmail.com
Creeds from the Growing in Faith Candidates...
During a retreat focused on the Apostles' Creed, we ask our catechumens and candidates to write their own creed. We do this because these candidates, and all of us, will proclaim our Baptismal Covenant at the Easter Vigil and on Easter Sunday. During Lent we will share with you the creeds that the candidates composed during the retreat.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
MY ORIGINAL CREED
(As I sat alone in the sanctuary with the first rays of sunset silently illuminating the windows and filling the pews and beams with luminous rays of light, I felt the Spirit fill me and come upon me, and the words flowed effortlessly upon the page.)
I believe in God the father -- my Abba father Creator, protector, provider, teacher, authority, and bearer of unconditional love -- no matter my past transgressions. He created me in His likeness -- a beautiful child of God and I will abide by His word and strive to be His faithful servant.
I believe in Jesus Christ, the only son of God. The acceptor of all who believe in Him and walk in his ways. I believe that Jesus died for my sins and the sins of all mankind so that we may all be forgiven, and so that I too, can forgive others, His love fills my heart to overflowing.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, who speaks through all of us. The fire of the Holy Spirit ignites the flames of my drive and passion for my church, my family, and my community.
I believe in the divine church -- a widely diverse and all-encompassing, unified community in Christ, whose duty it is to spread the word of the Lord throughout the world. I am the face of Christianity in the eyes of all the nations of the earth.
I believe that every person who proclaims themselves to be Christian, and who abides by the messages and teachings of the scriptures, is a saint of our Lord. I believe that it is in the unification of these saints that the church comes together as one body in Christ.
I believe in the resurrection of the Spirit -- the uplifting of the mind, heart, and soul unto a greater and pure, holy communion with God.
I want to thank everyone who attended the event. We had a great time. While I don't have a final accounting of our total of what we made I think we are very close to the needed $10,000.
Special thanks to Ed Hollingshead's band "Quiet". They added a special touch to the evening.
Special thanks also to The Men's Group, headed by chef Rob Stoinoff, who cooked for us and did a spectacular job with the lasagna dinner.
Thank you to all the individuals who helped by donating items to the auction. There were lots of you!
Cathedral Organ Restoration Project
on the home stretch!
The Cathedral organ restoration is nearing completion! The Canon Grant Carey antiphonal "Processional" organ will arrive in a truck from the Schoenstein factory on Monday, March 28th, the day after Easter. Installation will take a full week, and the voicing and tuning crew will return for final voicing and tuning the first week of April. A formal dedication ceremony will take place sometime in the Fall, after Bishop Beisner returns from his sabbatical.
Pictured above, is one of the two new organ cases which have been assembled in the factory. The wood will of course, be stained to match the Cathedral furnishings, and the copper façade pipes are colored to match the existing trumpet pipes.
If you have not made a pledge or contribution in honor of  Canon Emeritus, the Reverend Dr Grant S. Carey, we invite you to do so now! Just click here to download a pledge form, or pick one up at the Welcome Center at any time.
And again, a huge Thank You to everyone who has supported this project. Our organ looks and sounds better than ever, and will continue to serve us for decades to come!
Hiking
Hiking Guild Special Hike: SUTTER BUTTES
Saturday, March 19, 2016
Ridge Hike - East Shaeffer Ranch
This is a special hike in a deeply spiritual place that has touched the hearts of all in our group. It was the last time that we had the pleasure of the company of Alan Meyer on one of our outings. There are many hikes throughout the Buttes, rated from 1 boot to 6 boots [1 being easiest: 3-4 miles, less that 600 feet elevation].   The beauty of this area is difficult to express. You will return to Sacramento with a renewed sense of wonder.
You have to make advance reservations for this hike, as the landowners who allow us to go on their properties try to limit the impact on their ranches. Also, there is a cost of $35.00 per person, which must be paid as indicated below to secure your reservation.   Money goes to pay for the docents who lead the hikes; help the landowner defray administrative cost [insurance]; and support the Middle Mountain Foundation, a non-profit organization that seeks to keep the Buttes from being developed commercially.
Because of the drive to the Buttes, the time for gathering at the cathedral and departure are changed. Make sure your alarm clock is adjusted accordingly.
Otherwise, same Rules:
  • 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month:
  • Meet on Cathedral steps at 6:45am for a 7:00am departure:
  • Bring plenty of water, snacks and a sack lunch.
  • Prepare to have good fellowship and a good walkin God's Great Outdoors.
This is a special hike for members of our group of hikers.
Send your check for $35 per person made out to:
         Middle Mountain Foundation
         PO Box 3613, Yuba City, CA 95992
         March 19, 2016
I am having Middle Mountain hold open 18 spaces for this hike out of a total of 23 allowed. When those spaces are gone, you will have to wait until next year to see the buttes.   So please, if you want to go one this hike, sign up ASAP. Your check should Memo Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Group.  Please e-mail me and let me know you are signed up so I can keep track.
