"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

I'm struck by the coincidence of scheduling last Sunday.  While I was at St. Francis Church in Fair Oaks at the beginning of their intentional journey to explore inclusion of persons who are LGBT, Pastor Joy Johnson was preaching at Trinity Cathedral to kick off our intentional conversation about race and racial justice. With the increased profile of police shootings and protests and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, I have been eager to learn more about race in the United States.  I'm grateful for Pastor Pamela and Deacon Steve and the Adult Spiritual Formation committee for planning our Lenten program.

I hope you are able to join us tonight as we come together to kick off this program with dinner and two presentations.  We will watch a sermon from our Presiding Bishop and a talk from NPR's Michelle Norris.  I have seen both of these videos and they are powerful.  For the next six weeks, we will be meeting in small groups to watch and reflect on videos of other presentations.  I will be leading a drop-in group on Sunday mornings at 10:15am, for people who are not part of a group. Even if you do not plan to be part of a small group, I hope you can come tonight to be a part of the church as we begin this conversation.

Tomorrow night we have a fundraising dinner and auction for our Floyd School field trips. You can get tickets at the door.

Sunday you can buy a Super Bowl pizza from the youth group.

Next week we begin Lent.  On Tuesday night we will have a spectacular Shrove Tuesday dinner in the Great Hall.  The menu is outrageous.  Then on Wednesday we will have Ash Wednesday services at 7:00am, 9:00am, 12:10pm and 6:00pm. We will also have groups throughout the city offering Ashes To Go.

As usual we have a great deal of exciting and important things happening this coming week.

Annually members from Trinity Cathedral join other churches in Sacramento and walk to help feed the hungry. A portion of the walk donations is shared with local charities including River City Food Bank. River City Food Bank is a charity that is near and dear to Trinity Cathedral and its members.

The walk is in October and the leader is responsible to form a team of walkers and have their friends and family donate to the cause.

Please contact Marion Welch at (916) 923-5781 or by email at 49steelerway@gmail.com. She will help you through the process. It is fun to participate, as you will help with the cause that no one goes hungry.
The Reading Corner...
There's always something new in our library, which you can check out on the first Sunday of the month.     ~~Phyllis Ehlert

Here's a timely book in our church Library: Christians and the Common Good by Charles E. Gutenson. The author proposes that the kingdom of God is concerned with justice and communal well-being. The question is how Christians can be active in public life without getting mired down in political polarization and controversy.

Centering Prayer is a method of meditation that helps quiet the mind and participate in God's presence. It is a receptive form of prayer - a kind of resting in God.  Learn to just be...in the midst of God's love. All are welcome.

Hiking Trinity Hiking Guild
Saturday, February 6

Fellow Hikers,

The hike for this coming Saturday, February 6, will take us to one of the favorite venues for our group in the past:  The Cosumnes River Nature preserve.  This is a hike that you do not want to miss.  All flat, concrete walkways, total of 4 miles round trip.  Bring your binoculars if you have them.  Great wildlife and birding walk.  Bring a sack lunch and as always, bring plenty of water.  The weatherman is predicting sunshine all day, but even if it rains, we will still go.  Great hike, great company, see you this coming Saturday.

Ash Wednesday Services

at Trinity Cathedral

7:00am, 9:00am, 12:10pm, 6:00pm

On Ash Wednesday, February 10th, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral will be offering "Ashes to Go," a new approach to a centuries-old Christian tradition. Teams of clergy and lay people will be offering ashes and prayer from 11am-2pm at the following downtown Sacramento sites:

- Outside Trinity Cathedral, 2620 Capitol Ave.
- Outside St. Paul's Church, 1430 J St.
- At the Rapid Transit Stop at R & 29th St.
- At Caesar Chavez Park, 910 I St.

2015 Ashes to Go
Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is part of a new nationwide movement that has clergy and lay people visiting transit stops, street corners, coffee shops, and college campuses to mark the foreheads of interested passers-by with ashes and invite them to repent of past wrongdoing and seek forgiveness and renewal.

In the Christian tradition, Ash Wednesday marks the start of the holy season of Lent, a time for reflection and repentance in preparation for the celebration of Easter.  For centuries, Christians have received a cross of ashes on the face at the beginning of that season as a reminder of mortal failings and an invitation to receive God's forgiveness. Ashes to Go provides the opportunity to participate in that tradition for people who have lost their connection to a church, or have never participated before.

More information about the Ashes to Go movement can be found at www.AshesToGo.org

Family Promise Returns to Trinity
February 14-20, 2016

Our Family Promise families return to the Cathedral on Sunday, February 14, Valentine's Day, for a one-week stay in the Great Hall. We need volunteers to provide a dinner each day at 6 p.m.; evening hosts who can serve, clean up, and make sure the families' needs are provided for; and overnight hosts who ensure their security and comfort while they spend the night in the Great Hall. We also could use folks who can help set up the cots at the beginning of the week and at the end, load them back into the trailer, and/or launder the bedding.

If you prefer, you can drop off an entrée at the kitchen before 5:30 p.m. and we will prepare it for you. (Please make sure you leave instructions if you go this route! Some us are experienced cooks, but we still need to know how long to cook it, at what temperature, etc.)

We would also like to do something a little special for the families on Valentine's Day. If you would like to bring a Valentine-themed dessert, flowers, or crafts for the children that Sunday, it would be much appreciated!

Please sign up on the Family Promise poster in the office hallway, or email Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, or phone 916-708-4295.

Family PromiseFamily Promise is a national organization which transitions homeless families into stable homes and employment. The Sacramento center has been the most successful in the network, with 30 families placed into housing and jobs last year. For more information, please ask the office for our Family Promise FAQ, or ask Eleanor to email an electronic copy of the booklet to you.
Annual Dinner and Annual Meeting

This year's annual dinner is Sunday February 21 at 5:00PM. Signups start this Sunday. The vestry members and staff hosts some of the tables. But we usually need additional hosts. If you want to host a table, contact Jerry Paré (jpare@trinitycathedral.org; 916-930-8032)

2015 Annual Meeting
The dinner is followed by the Annual Meeting at 7:00PM. The annual meeting is where the budget for 2016 is presented, the Dean gives a "State of the Cathedral" presentation, we elect new vestry members and delegates to the diocesan convention, and...DEAN'S AWARDS are presented. Put both events on your calendar now!

2015 Dean's Award recipients with Dean Baker (l to r) Vaughn Wolff, Susan Wilson and Nelson Lucas

Nomination forms for convention delegates are available on line by following this link and at the Welcome Center. If you want to nominate someone, please consult with that person first. Thank you!
