"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

One of the blessings of being the Cathedral of the Diocese of Northern California is the way we get to serve and connect with other congregations. This past Saturday we hosted a choir festival that welcomed singers from throughout our diocese. I officiated at the evensong service that concluded the festival.  The music was spectacular and it was great to see the diversity of singers wearing the distinctive choir robes of their various congregations.

This Sunday I will be at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Fair Oaks. Their rector, The Rev. Joe Duggan, has been leading their Vestry in a conversation about the Episcopal Church's authorization of same-sex marriage and he would like to broaden the conversation to include the entire congregation. Trinity Cathedral had conversations about welcoming persons who were LGBT years ago. Our inclusion has evolved over years and has become an important part of our identity. There are congregations who are just starting this process, and St. Francis is one of them. I will preach at St. Francis and then lead a forum conversation.  I am proud of the work they are doing and I am honored I get to be a part of their process. Please hold us in prayer as you gather for worship.

I'm sorry I will miss church at the Cathedral this Sunday. Our preacher will be Pastor Joy Johnson.  Joy is the founder and senior pastor of Higher Hope Christian Church in Sacramento and the President of the Board of Directors of Sacramento Area Congregations Together.  She is a dynamic, African American preacher.  We asked her to come at this time to launch us into our Lenten conversation about racism and racial justice.  While we have done a good job at Trinity Cathedral listening to voices of people who are gay, lesbian or transsexual, we have not given the same attention to the stories of people struggling with racism. It is now time for us to enter into this conversation and I'm grateful for Pastor Joy's willingness to preach on Sunday.  I'm also grateful for Deacon Steve, Pastor Pamela and the many volunteers who will be leading us in our Lenten conversations.

There is a striking symmetry in the fact that I will be preaching at St. Francis Episcopal Church inviting them into a conversation about marriage equality at the same time Pastor Joy will be preaching here, inviting us into a conversation about racism. I hope you are able to come and hear Pastor Joy on Sunday morning.

Each is unique and each is a collector's item.

Each year the cathedral purchases a table at the event and offers seats to the people of the cathedral. This year we purchased a table of eight, three seats are spoken for, so I have five to give away.

Centering Prayer is a method of meditation that helps quiet the mind and participate in God's presence. It is a receptive form of prayer - a kind of resting in God.  Learn to just be...in the midst of God's love. All are welcome.

Choral Evensong and

Candlemas Procession

Thursday, January 28th at 6:00 pm

Celebrated since the fourth century, the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord, commemorates the journey of Jesus' family to the temple, forty days after his birth, according to Jewish custom. St Luke recounts their encounter with the elderly Simeon, who tells Mary and Joseph that their son is the "light to lighten the gentiles, and glory of his people Israel." For hundreds of years, a candle-lit procession symbolizing that "light" became a part of the celebration, and the feast has come to be known in many places as "Candlemas."

Tonight the Trinity Cathedral Choir will sing our monthly service of Choral Evensong, preceded by a Candlemas procession from the Cathedral courtyard. The service will include music by Thomas Attwood Walmisley, Leo Sowerby, and will conclude with Peter Hallock's ethereal anthem "Let my prayer come up as the incense."

Please join us for this beautiful and unique service!

Thursday Night at the Cathedral

Evensong - 6:00pm

Dinner - 6:30pm

 Classes - 7:00pm

Classes

Solfire Yogais grateful to be hosting a special vinyasa flow yoga series here at Trinity Cathedral for all who are interested in exploring yoga as a way to connect to mind, body, and spirit. We encourage you to come with an empty stomach, a full heart, and a yoga mat! Classes will be held from 7-8pm on Thursday evenings in the Assembly Area.

Poetry Writing Workshop: Put aside any writing anxieties and come to this no-threat, collaborative workshop that will help you develop and refine your own poetic voice and style. Participants will achieve this primarily through writing exercises and giving constructive feedback to each other's draft poems. Contemporary poetry has a very wide umbrella and we leave it up to you to write the kinds of poems you want. Please join us Thursday evenings in the Conference Room for the month of January! Facilitator: Dennis Hock.

Practical Spirituality: Suspicion of organized religion has caused many people to abandon a belief in a loving, intelligent and caring God, trading it for the world's view of limitation and scarcity. At the same time churches are in a position to present this God as completely accessible and teach how to become confident, becoming the person each would envision. Realizing there is One Source that supplies everything all creatures need and desire will help us to change unhelpful perceptions, attitudes and beliefs that imprison and abandon us to fear, discouragement and despair. This class, facilitated by Vaughn Wolff, will explore how to live in harmony without worry for lack of anything and manifest peace, love and joy by applying Practical Principles of Christianity. Thursday evenings in the Bookshop.

Ed Hollinghead's band "Quiet" will serenade you as you bid on the wonderful array of items and gift certificates.

You can find gifts for your Valentine at the Live and Silent Auction. John Tennyson and  Bob Reinhard will be our auctioneers for the evening.

Family Promise Returns to Trinity
February 14-20, 2016

Our Family Promise families return to the Cathedral on Sunday, February 14, Valentine's Day, for a one-week stay in the Great Hall. We need volunteers to provide a dinner each day at 6 p.m.; evening hosts who can serve, clean up, and make sure the families' needs are provided for; and overnight hosts who ensure their security and comfort while they spend the night in the Great Hall. We also could use folks who can help set up the cots at the beginning of the week and at the end, load them back into the trailer, and/or launder the bedding.

If you prefer, you can drop off an entrée at the kitchen before 5:30 p.m. and we will prepare it for you. (Please make sure you leave instructions if you go this route! Some us are experienced cooks, but we still need to know how long to cook it, at what temperature, etc.)

We would also like to do something a little special for the families on Valentine's Day. If you would like to bring a Valentine-themed dessert, flowers, or crafts for the children that Sunday, it would be much appreciated!

Please sign up on the Family Promise poster in the office hallway, or email Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, or phone 916-708-4295.

Family PromiseFamily Promise is a national organization which transitions homeless families into stable homes and employment. The Sacramento center has been the most successful in the network, with 30 families placed into housing and jobs last year. For more information, please ask the office for our Family Promise FAQ, or ask Eleanor to email an electronic copy of the booklet to you.
