"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

On Tuesday night the vestry met to pass a budget for 2016. Church budgets usually don't change much from year to year.  That said, there were a few important elements in this budget I'd like to mention.  First, we are moving our custodians from 3/4 to full time.  Years ago during the economic downturn, we moved our custodians to 3/4 time. This allowed us to keep our three primary custodians on staff. We were able to offer them extra hours as we hosted more events at the Cathedral, but we have always wanted to bring them back to full time and I am pleased we are doing so.  We added $50,000 for deferred maintenance. Under the leadership of our facilities committee we have begun tending our building in a systematic way and expect to repair, maintain and improve the facility some each year. Finally, we added $20,000 for advertising and marketing. We are partnering with the Sacramento News and Review to raise the profile of Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento. Trinity Cathedral is a remarkable place and we need to do a better job of sharing our story with Sacramento. The budget will be presented to the congregation at our Annual Meeting on February 21.

This budget is dependent on pledges from the congregation.  We have about 90 pledges from 2015 that have not been renewed for 2016.  If you have not yet pledged for 2016, please do so now.  You can fill out a pledge card in church, or if you prefer, email me the amount you intend to contribute and I will pass it on to the stewardship committee.

I encourage you to attend our Floyd School fundraising dinner and auction on February 5.  This is an important way we help children who are living in poverty go on field trips with their school.  I promise the dinner will be delicious and fun and we have some great items that will be auctioned.  You can find details in this e-news by following this link.

Updates to the Safe Ground Pilgrimage Ministry in 2016

Through the tireless compassion and hard work of Trinity Cathedral's congregation and all of our outreach volunteers, we served over 4,000 meals to individuals experiencing homelessness last year through the Safe Ground ministry!  Without the generosity and love of all of you, we would not be able to make such a difference in the lives of our community members.

As our New Year in ministry begins, new beginnings are coming to Trinity Cathedral's Safe Ground Pilgrimage outreach ministry.  Starting this month, Michael Donnoe will step down as this ministry's coordinator after a year of service, so that he may actively engage with other ministries here at Trinity.  Our new co-coordinators stepping in to facilitate Safe Ground are Bill Shane, John Kraynak, Jess Orgambide, and Donna Howard.  All four bring a host of talent and experience to this ministry, and have been volunteering with Safe Ground for many months.

We are all deeply called as Christians to be devoted to others in love, mercy, and justice.  If your talents, experience, and interest call you to work with us in serving the hungry, the poor, and the marginalized in our community, then please contact me at deaconskiff@gmail.com, so that I may introduce you to our many outreach ministries.

Deacon Steve Skiffington
Wedding Outreach Ministry @ Trinity Cathedral
...a new ministry for new lives

A few months ago Peter Perera approached me with the idea of promoting the cathedral as a wedding destination. The gist of the idea is that we have a beautiful site, centrally located, open to all, and a jewel that needs to be shared by more people. I've discussed this with your clergy team and they are in full support of the idea. So as grandpa said to grandma, "Button up your high shoes, Gert, 'cause we're steppin' out."

There are currently two wedding shows coming up and I've booked a table for us at both of them. Ultimate Bridal Shows at the Crowne Plaza (Hwy 80 & Madison Ave.) on April 10th, and the LGBT Wedding Expo at the Hyatt Regency Downtown on March 6th.

The cathedral's policy on weddings will not change. Anyone wishing to be married at the cathedral will follow established policy. This ministry will be responsible for researching and booking wedding shows, and is separate from our Wedding Coordinators, whose job is to meet with those seeking a wedding and walking them through the process after they have met with clergy.

For now we are looking for people to help set-up the booths and staff them for both events. We are also looking for people who would like to be part of the Wedding Outreach Ministry. Please contact Peter if you wish to be part of reaching out to the wider Sacramento community as we introduce them to our wonderful cathedral, and more importantly, this wonderful congregation.

Believing Jesus: A Journey Through the Book of Acts by Lisa Harper, who is a seminary-trained scholar
and hilarious storyteller, retraces the revolutionary steps of early Christians as they proceeded forward with so much power, grace and authority, flush from their encounter with the risen Christ. Harper is captivating with colorful popular references that connect days of old with today.

Lunch Bunch
meets Thursdays at Noon

Lunch Bunch will be remembering a wonder filled book edited by our own Jane Onstead Lamb, spouse of Bishop Jerry Lamb. The title of the book is HURT, JOY AND THE GRACE OF GOD: A Resurrection Story of the Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin California. Even if you've read this book, please consider joining the group to look again at this difficult time in our past and the joy that grace brought through that darkness.

We plan to meet for five weeks, beginning Thursday, January 7. Please bring lunch, your questions and comments - and especially yourself just as you are.

If you have any questions, contact the Rev. Pamela Anderson at pamela@trinitycathedral.org

Centering Prayer is a method of meditation that helps quiet the mind and participate in God's presence. It is a receptive form of prayer - a kind of resting in God.  Learn to just be...in the midst of God's love. All are welcome.

Thursday Night at the Cathedral

 on January 21

Compline - 6:00pm

Dinner - 6:30pm

 Classes - 7:00pm

Classes

Solfire Yogais grateful to be hosting a special vinyasa flow yoga series here at Trinity Cathedral for all who are interested in exploring yoga as a way to connect to mind, body, and spirit. We encourage you to come with an empty stomach, a full heart, and a yoga mat! Classes will be held from 7-8pm on Thursday evenings in the Assembly Area.

Poetry Writing Workshop: Put aside any writing anxieties and come to this no-threat, collaborative workshop that will help you develop and refine your own poetic voice and style. Participants will achieve this primarily through writing exercises and giving constructive feedback to each other's draft poems. Contemporary poetry has a very wide umbrella and we leave it up to you to write the kinds of poems you want. Please join us Thursday evenings in the Conference Room for the month of January! Facilitator: Dennis Hock.

Practical Spirituality: Suspicion of organized religion has caused many people to abandon a belief in a loving, intelligent and caring God, trading it for the world's view of limitation and scarcity. At the same time churches are in a position to present this God as completely accessible and teach how to become confident, becoming the person each would envision. Realizing there is One Source that supplies everything all creatures need and desire will help us to change unhelpful perceptions, attitudes and beliefs that imprison and abandon us to fear, discouragement and despair. This class, facilitated by Vaughn Wolff, will explore how to live in harmony without worry for lack of anything and manifest peace, love and joy by applying Practical Principles of Christianity. Thursday evenings in the Bookshop.

Diocesan Choir Festival XXIX

The twenty-ninth Annual Diocesan Choir Festival comes to Trinity Cathedral on Saturday, January 23rd. After an all day rehearsal, the day will culminate with a service of Choral Evensong at 4:00 pm, to which all are invited!

The festival will be conducted this year, by our very own Canon David Link. The organist for the service will be Dr Ryan Enright, accompanist for the Sacramento Choral Society, and organist at St John's Lutheran church. Included will be music Thomas Attwood Walmisley, Bruce Neswick, Sidney Nicholson, and Thomas Ebdon.

Please join us for a lovely service at the end of the day!
Contemplative Eucharist
at St. Paul's
Saturday, January 23, 4:30pm at
St. Paul's, 1430 J Street

"On that day, you will know that I am in the Father, and you in me, and I in you."     John 14:20

While every Eucharist is open to the presence of God, a contemplative Eucharist focuses awareness of God's presence by using a simple, familiar liturgy with some extra space for silence between prayers and readings. After receiving Communion, God's presence will be fostered and welcomed by an optional period of Centering Prayer. A very minimal sermon will explore the Wisdom dimension of the Sunday Lectionary readings. Please join us for a new experience of Holy Communion.

We'll be approaching the religion with an attitude of appreciation and curiosity. Questions encouraged! Andre Jensen will facilitate the group. He has been teaching Philosophy at Sacramento City College for over 20 years and has been teaching a survey course in World Religions since 2008.
Discover Your Spiritual Gifts
to the World for Epiphany

Meets in the Conference Room at 10:15am

As the wise men brought their gifts to the Baby Jesus, so we bring our spiritual gifts to our daily lives! This four week class will include assessment tools for determining your gifts and how to use/share them in everyday life. We will be guided by the book Discover Your Spiritual Gifts the Network Way published by Zondervan.

Listen Sacred Conversations for Racial Justice: Listen for a Change

During the season of Lent 2016, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral's Adult Spiritual Formation and Outreach Ministry Teams will host Sacred Conversations for Racial Justice: Listen for a Change, a six-week series of sacred and respectful conversations around race. These conversations will help us better understand racial tensions in our country so that we can respond in an informed and Christ-filled way.

During the series, which begins Thursday, February 4, participants will watch six keynote speakers via the Internet, followed by facilitated discussions in small groups. There is no charge for this series. Participants will have the opportunity to sign up a small group beginning Sunday, January 17, and also on the evening of Thursday, February 4. Small groups are available throughout the week.

We welcome additional small group facilitators. A facilitator training video and printed course material are available. If you have group facilitator experience and would like to be considered for this opportunity to facilitate a small group, please contact Kelly Mieske.

The series begins on Thursday, February 4. Participants can enjoy dinner in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral's Great Hall at 5:30pm for $7. At 6:30pm in the sanctuary, attendees will watch a recording of Presiding Bishop Michael Curry's sermon, participate in Holy Eucharist, and watch a recording of the keynote address featuring Michele Norris, "Eavesdropping on America's Conversation on Race."

Other speakers in the series include  Nicholas Kristof, Emilie Townes, Victor Rios, Kelly Brown Douglas, and Anna Deavere Smith.

Family Promise Returns to Trinity
February 14-20, 2016

Our Family Promise families return to the Cathedral on Sunday, February 14, Valentine's Day, for a one-week stay in the Great Hall. We need volunteers to provide a dinner each day at 6 p.m.; evening hosts who can serve, clean up, and make sure the families' needs are provided for; and overnight hosts who ensure their security and comfort while they spend the night in the Great Hall. We also could use folks who can help set up the cots at the beginning of the week and at the end, load them back into the trailer, and/or launder the bedding.

If you prefer, you can drop off an entrée at the kitchen before 5:30 p.m. and we will prepare it for you. (Please make sure you leave instructions if you go this route! Some us are experienced cooks, but we still need to know how long to cook it, at what temperature, etc.)

We would also like to do something a little special for the families on Valentine's Day. If you would like to bring a Valentine-themed dessert, flowers, or crafts for the children that Sunday, it would be much appreciated!

Please sign up on the Family Promise poster in the office hallway, or email Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, or phone 916-708-4295.

Family PromiseFamily Promise is a national organization which transitions homeless families into stable homes and employment. The Sacramento center has been the most successful in the network, with 30 families placed into housing and jobs last year. For more information, please ask the office for our Family Promise FAQ, or ask Eleanor to email an electronic copy of the booklet to you.

Canon Link and the Red Baron ride again!

In 2016 I will once again participate in NorCal AIDS Cycle... a three-hundred mile/four day bike ride, in support of agencies in Northern California, providing urgently needed services to those suffering from HIV/AIDS. This is my sixth year riding NCAC, and once again, I lead the "River City Roadies" cycling team, sponsored by the River City Food Bank, and long time beneficiary of the ride.

Once again, I am asking for your support. Thanks to the generosity of so many people, I was able to raise over eight-thousand dollars last year, and hope to do the same again this year. The agencies who receive our grants provide badly needed services to those suffering from this disease. Most of them receive little public funding, so NCAC is crucial to keeping them operating.

Most of you know that I ride in memory of Ken Piercy, a long-time member of the Cathedral Choir, who fought AIDS for nearly twenty years, and who died just prior to my first NCAC ride in 2010.

Every donation you make, whether large or small, makes a big difference in our community.  I promise to ride every one of the three-hundred miles, but I will need your help!  Won't you join me in supporting this important cause??
NCAC 2016 departs Sacramento for Auburn on Thursday, May 12... please click here to make a fast and easy tax-deductible contribution.

And thank you, as always for your support!
