"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

I mentioned in Sunday's sermon an interfaith Habitat for Humanity project that is being quickly planned in order to show community unity at a time when Muslims and others are being threatened by harsh political rhetoric and in some cases violence.  We will build two neighboring houses, one sponsored by Muslims and another by other faith groups.  So far Bishop Beisner and six area Episcopal congregations, including ours, are committed to support the project. There will be a kickoff event on Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Everyone present will sign sheet-rock that will be use in the houses.  We would like to have lots of people at the event.  If you can attend, please email me at bnbaker83@gmail.com and rsvp by following this link.  For a printable flyer click here.

On a completely different note, there is breaking news from England.  As many of you know, the worldwide Anglican Communion is made up of 38 different autonomous provinces.  Each province is lead by a primate; ours is our presiding bishop, The Very Rev. Michael Curry.  The Primates are meeting in London this week.  There has been tension in the Anglican Communion over the move toward acceptance of people who are gay and lesbian in some provinces.  There are several provinces who have moved toward inclusion, but The Episcopal Church seems to draw the greatest attention.  The primates have just voted to place a minor sanction on the Episcopal Church for three years.  We can not represent the Anglican Communion on ecumenical and interfaith bodies, we cannot be appointed or elected to serve on committees internal to the Anglican Communion.  Episcopalians who are already serving on such committees are not to vote on issues pertaining to doctrine or polity.  Since these committees don't govern doctrine or polity, this last sanction doesn't mean much.

While I will likely write a reflection on this after I have a chance to study the situation more, I would like to offer a few initial thoughts. First, our move toward marriage equality was the result of 40 years of hard, painful, prayerful and careful engagement with scripture and one another. I, and others who worked on this issue, firmly believe this is God's call to us, and that we are called to be a witness to the full dignity and inclusion of people and couples who are gay or lesbian. If we have to pay a price for this stand, then it is a price we willingly pay. That said, it isn't much of a price to pay.  This is not a very big deal in terms of our relationships with Anglicans around the world. Our real connection with the worldwide Anglican Communion is in our partnerships in mission on the local level.  Those will continue unchanged.

When reading this statement sanctioning the Episcopal Church, it is easy to react out of anger or fear.  I sometimes need to remind myself that Christ's love casts out fear. Our call is to love.  Love those sanctioning us.  Love the gay and lesbian persons who continue to be subjected to hatred and violence, who will see this statement as another spear in their sides.  Love and pray for one another.

Lunch Bunch
meets Thursdays at Noon
in the Conference Room

Lunch Bunch will be remembering a wonder filled book edited by our own Jane Onstead Lamb, spouse of Bishop Jerry Lamb. The title of the book is HURT, JOY AND THE GRACE OF GOD: A Resurrection Story of the Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin California. Even if you've read this book, please consider joining the group to look again at this difficult time in our past and the joy that grace brought through that darkness.

As then Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori notes in her forward, "It can be disconcerting to discover that church communities have all-too-human failings, but they wouldn't be truly human communities if they didn't.... This story is important because it tells of the ability of people who feel abandoned to remember or even discover that God is still in their midst, even when they have lost most of what they thought defined their lives with God."

We plan to meet for five weeks, beginning Thursday, January 7. Please bring lunch, your questions and comments - and especially yourself just as you are.

If you have any questions, contact the Rev. Pamela Anderson at pamela@trinitycathedral.org
or Susan Van Dyke at svandyke59701@gmail.com

Have you heard the new pipes??

If you have attended Trinity Cathedral in the last three months, you certainly have. The first phase of our Cathedral organ restoration project was completed this fall, with the voicing of the new pedal principal pipes (those shiny pipes in the front). This, along with all the other work which started just a year ago, has brought our Cathedral organ new life, and judging by your comments, sounds better than ever.

We are now thoroughly in the midst of Phase Two of the organ restoration project... the completion of the Canon Grant Carey Antiphonal organ. Three new stops are being added at the north end of the Cathedral. Two new cases will be added to the back of the Cathedral on both sides of the existing trumpet pipes. The pipes in the façade will be made of polished copper to match the "Imperial Trumpets," so it will be a visually stunning addition to the organ.

The new part of the organ is now being built in the Schoenstein organ factory in Benicia, and is scheduled to be delivered and installed shortly after Easter.

Through the generosity of so many, we are close to having raised the $130,000 needed to complete this phase of the project. If you have made a pledge to the Organ Restoration Project, but have not yet fulfilled that pledge, we would like to ask you to bring your pledge up to date. If you have not yet made a contribution to the project, we invite you to do so now! Just follow this link to download a contribution form. You can even "adopt-a-pipe" for $650!

Thank you to everyone for your support of this exciting project!

Thursday Night at the Cathedral

 on January 14

Compline - 6:00pm

Dinner - 6:30pm

 Classes - 7:00pm

Classes

Solfire Yogais grateful to be hosting a special vinyasa flow yoga series here at Trinity Cathedral for all who are interested in exploring yoga as a way to connect to mind, body, and spirit. We encourage you to come with an empty stomach, a full heart, and a yoga mat! Classes will be held from 7-8pm on Thursday evenings in the Assembly Area.

Poetry Writing Workshop: Put aside any writing anxieties and come to this no-threat, collaborative workshop that will help you develop and refine your own poetic voice and style. Participants will achieve this primarily through writing exercises and giving constructive feedback to each other's draft poems. Contemporary poetry has a very wide umbrella and we leave it up to you to write the kinds of poems you want. Please join us Thursday evenings in the Conference Room for the month of January! Facilitator: Dennis Hock.

Practical Spirituality: Suspicion of organized religion has caused many people to abandon a belief in a loving, intelligent and caring God, trading it for the world's view of limitation and scarcity. At the same time churches are in a position to present this God as completely accessible and teach how to become confident, becoming the person each would envision. Realizing there is One Source that supplies everything all creatures need and desire will help us to change unhelpful perceptions, attitudes and beliefs that imprison and abandon us to fear, discouragement and despair. This class, facilitated by Vaughn Wolff, will explore how to live in harmony without worry for lack of anything and manifest peace, love and joy by applying Practical Principles of Christianity. Thursday evenings in the Bookshop.

INTERESTED IN ASHES-TO-GO?

2015 Ashes-to-Go:

Susan Van Dyke and Rev. Megan Anderson

Ashes-to-Go is a community outreach project designed to bring the imposition of ashes and prayer to people in various locations downtown such as RT stops, parks, and office buildings on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 10th). This has been an exciting and engaging experience for those who have participated in the past. If you are interested in participating, there will be required training. You must email, call, or talk to Rev. Megan by Friday January 15th to serve on a team.

Start the New Year off Right!
Saturday, January 16, 2016

Same Rules as when we were last together:
  • 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month: meet on Cathedral steps at 8:45 am for 9:00 am departure
  • Bring plenty of water and a snack
  • Prepare to have good fellowship and a good walkin God's Great Outdoors.
This coming Saturday we are going on a walk to McKinley Park and back.  We will do this for a couple of Saturdays until we get our legs back.

REMEMBER: We were all 7 years younger when we started this the first time, and it will take a commitment to walking during the week to get back in shape. All of us must start slow, and we will add more distance and more interesting places as we grow.

NEW EMAIL ADDRESS FOR GEORGE:
Needed: Socks, Feminine Hygiene Products, and Personal Care Items

In response to the desperate need for safe sanctuary for homeless youth in the city of Sacramento, Trinity Outreach will hold a Second Saturday Drop-In Center beginning Saturday, January 16, 2016, and will continue throughout the calendar year. We will be offering a hot meal and Movie Night in the Great Hall from 4 to 8 p.m. We would also like to provide some basic necessities for our young guests, including new, clean socks, feminine hygiene products, and personal care items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc. If you could drop off a package of socks or other items at the Cathedral before Saturday afternoon, it would be dearly appreciated. We will have a drop off box available during office hours and Sundays. Tube socks are okay, but cotton gets wet too easily and doesn't dry well during our cold, wet winters. Cheap dress socks made from a polyester blend or wool sports socks would be ideal, but we aren't picky!

More questions about the new ministry or dropping off a donation? Please contact Michael Donnoe at mdonnoe@gmail.com, mobile phone 916-992-3196, Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, text 916-708-4295, or Rod Thomas at 502-558-2497.

Contemplative Eucharist
at St. Paul's
Saturday, January 23, 4:30pm at
St. Paul's, 1430 J Street

"On that day, you will know that I am in the Father, and you in me, and I in you."     John 14:20

While every Eucharist is open to the presence of God, a contemplative Eucharist focuses awareness of God's presence by using a simple, familiar liturgy with some extra space for silence between prayers and readings. After receiving Communion, God's presence will be fostered and welcomed by an optional period of Centering Prayer. A very minimal sermon will explore the Wisdom dimension of the Sunday Lectionary readings. Please join us for a new experience of Holy Communion.

Family Promise Returns to Trinity
February 14-20, 2016

Our Family Promise families return to the Cathedral on Sunday, February 14, Valentine's Day, for a one-week stay in the Great Hall. We need volunteers to provide a dinner each day at 6 p.m.; evening hosts who can serve, clean up, and make sure the families' needs are provided for; and overnight hosts who ensure their security and comfort while they spend the night in the Great Hall. We also could use folks who can help set up the cots at the beginning of the week and at the end, load them back into the trailer, and/or launder the bedding.

If you prefer, you can drop off an entrée at the kitchen before 5:30 p.m. and we will prepare it for you. (Please make sure you leave instructions if you go this route! Some us are experienced cooks, but we still need to know how long to cook it, at what temperature, etc.)

We would also like to do something a little special for the families on Valentine's Day. If you would like to bring a Valentine-themed dessert, flowers, or crafts for the children that Sunday, it would be much appreciated!

Please sign up on the Family Promise poster in the office hallway, or email Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, or phone 916-708-4295.

Family PromiseFamily Promise is a national organization which transitions homeless families into stable homes and employment. The Sacramento center has been the most successful in the network, with 30 families placed into housing and jobs last year. For more information, please ask the office for our Family Promise FAQ, or ask Eleanor to email an electronic copy of the booklet to you.
