"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

Happy new year!  I hope you had a joyous Christmas celebration.  We had both of our children home for a few days and it was lovely to be together as a family.  Mark is now back at the West Point Prep School and Laura at Sierra Nevada College in Tahoe.  While I enjoyed being with my family and it was great to celebrate Christmas and the new year, I am ready to be back to my more ordinary life and I am eager for the adventures 2016 will bring.

I want to highlight our upcoming conversation on racial reconciliation.  After preaching about the killing of Michael Brown and the protests in Ferguson, MO in August of 2014people requested programming that would help us learn more about the problem of racism in our country.  Since then the clergy have been talking about how to set up such programming. We have decided to use a conference hosted by Trinity Church Wall Street as the framework for our own programming.  Trinity Wall Street hosts an annual conference in January and this year the focus is on racial reconciliation.  We have applied to be a satellite location, accessing the conference via the internet.  Instead of meeting for the three days of the conference to participate live, we will be meeting over a series of 6 weeks in February and March.  Most meetings will be in small groups.  Details are available in this edition of the e-news.  In the past years, racial tensions have moved to the forefront of our cultural consciousness and we, as a church, need to play a larger part in our cultural conversation.

I want to thank everybody who gave me feedback on the proposed banner supporting our Muslim brothers and sisters.  Almost all of the comments were strongly supportive.  There were a few that raised concerns or suggested alternative wordings.  I met with the clergy and we had a lively conversation about alternative wordings and ended up where we started with the words I originally proposed, "Trinity Cathedral stands against fear and hatred in solidarity with our Muslim sisters and brothers."  This banner will be up a week or so, and then replaced by the banner promoting our program on racial reconciliation.  We will keep this banner ready so we can quickly install it when needed.

Santa at Floyd School.

WELL DONE

A big thank you and congratulations is in order to Trinity Cathedral for your Christmas giving.

Members of Trinity purchased gifts, toys,  food and clothing so that 28 families could have a Merry Christmas. In those 28 families we served about
100 people!

Santa and his Elves  plus volunteers delivered 350 holiday gift bags to each child at Floyd School. The bags contained a book, socks, toothbrush, little toys, holiday glasses and candy as a special treat.

We also gave the staff  of Floyd a treat of a Holiday luncheon on December 17 catered by our own Laura Stewart who owns "Indulge" Catering.

The Soroptimists of Sacramento Area gave us a wonderful donation for our Snack Pack program. If you know a Soroptimist  please thank them for their donation.
The donation was greatly needed and appreciated.

If I Plug My Ears, God Can't Tell Me What To Do by Jessie Clemence is a new book in the church Library that puts forward what it means to step out in faith and obedience to God's call-in spite of wanting to say, "I am not interested, this is hard and uncomfortable, and people will thing me a wacko. Amen."

Centering Prayer is a method of meditation that helps quiet the mind and participate in God's presence. It is a receptive form of prayer - a kind of resting in God.  Learn to just be...in the midst of God's love. All are welcome.

Classes

Solfire Yogais grateful to be hosting a special vinyasa flow yoga series here at Trinity Cathedral for all who are interested in exploring yoga as a way to connect to mind, body, and spirit. We encourage you to come with an empty stomach, a full heart, and a yoga mat! Classes will be held from 7-8pm on Thursday evenings in the Assembly Area.

Poetry Writing Workshop: Put aside any writing anxieties and come to this no-threat, collaborative workshop that will help you develop and refine your own poetic voice and style. Participants will achieve this primarily through writing exercises and giving constructive feedback to each other's draft poems. Contemporary poetry has a very wide umbrella and we leave it up to you to write the kinds of poems you want. Please join us Thursday evenings in the Conference Room for the month of January! Facilitator: Dennis Hock.

Practical Spirituality: Suspicion of organized religion has caused many people to abandon a belief in a loving, intelligent and caring God, trading it for the world's view of limitation and scarcity. At the same time churches are in a position to present this God as completely accessible and teach how to become confident, becoming the person each would envision. Realizing there is One Source that supplies everything all creatures need and desire will help us to change unhelpful perceptions, attitudes and beliefs that imprison and abandon us to fear, discouragement and despair. This class, facilitated by Vaughn Wolff, will explore how to live in harmony without worry for lack of anything and manifest peace, love and joy by applying Practical Principles of Christianity. Thursday evenings in the Bookshop.

Growing in Faith: The Rite of Commitment

By Jerry Paré, Catechumenate Director

During the 11:15 service this Sunday we will celebrate "The Rite of Commitment." This rite celebrates the first public statement of commitment for those participating in the
Sponsors Elba White, Rod Thomas and Rhonda Canby signing Martha Harding, Michael Donnoe & MeriAngel Enriquez
Growing in Faith meetings. It is their statement that they want to travel a path towards celebration of baptism, confirmation, formal reception into the Episcopal Church, or reaffirmation of faith.   The candidates have prayer partners who commit to journeying with them. And, equally important, we, the congregation, pledge our support for both candidates and prayer partners as they make this intentional and intensive Christian faith journey.

At Trinity the catechumenate (we call it "Growing in Faith") meets every week. The meetings are simple but powerful. We reflect on the Gospel passage that is proclaimed on Sunday. How does God speak to me and to us right now? How will I respond to the message? We pray using different methods that have been developed in the church. We have a retreat that focuses on the Apostles' Creed. Because of the level of sharing that occurs, we ask for a commitment to the process from those seeking this intentional deepening of their faith. If not committed now, then when? This is a real and serious question that candidates reflect on prior to standing before us for the Rite. It is a question that Jesus' disciples reflected on when they first decided to join him on his path to Jerusalem.

Growing in Faith is not always easy. In fact, all of us find ourselves called to seek answers to the questions faith puts before us. We are called to sacrifice. We are called to service. But we are also called to new life and celebration. This is what "Growing in Faith" is about. This is what candidates commit themselves to. This is what we invite each of you to participate in not only during the Rite of Commitment but throughout the coming months by praying for our candidates, sponsors and the leadership team.
