There's an app for that!

In my sermon last Sunday, I spoke about living with the fear and violence so omnipresent in this world of ours. We do so many unhelpful, and unhealthy things to keep the darkness away; we numb ourselves, disengage, and deflect. We live constantly in calamity mode. All our efforts may work for a while, but in pushing the darkness away, we also keep out the light of God and the powerful love of deep relationship with others far from our aching hearts.   This is not who God calls us to be.

So, what can we do to inoculate ourselves from all that binds us in knots, from all that keeps us from God's dreams for us? The answer lies in Jesus's words to the lawyer - "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. You shall love your neighbor as yourself." These directions - really they are more like a compass, orienting us to true North - did not begin with Jesus. They are the basic tenets of God's covenant with God's people, and can be traced all through the Old Testament.

Loving God, loving each other, loving ourselves begins with grounding ourselves in God. There are so many ways to do this. The very beginning, I believe, is recognizing that this is all about relationship, and relationship takes time. Time to be together, time to listen, time to talk. In our full days, carving out chunks of time to form relationships is often challenging. A way to begin is taking some time for silence and prayer - even small moments of time. It is after all in the dark and silence of the earth that the seed sends down roots.

And in this hi-tech world of ours, there's an app for that! I mentioned one on Sunday, and I'd like to offer a few more here. But, I invite you to explore this for yourself. There are lots of possibilities, which range from on-line daily prayer, to silent meditation, to downloadable chanted psalms or hymns. Here are a few options: Loyola Press offers a 3 Minute retreat, which includes music, photos, and scripture: www.loyolapress.com. On the Google Play store, you'll find a Centering Prayer app, and Room to Breathe app by Pauline Press. The Church of England has a number of great resources on line including daily morning and evening prayer, as well as daily scripture reading and the Psalms. Some apps more focused on meditation include Calm or Calm.com, Headspace, and The Mindfulness app; all of these are also on Google Play, or check the app store on your iphone.

Remember, you were not made to be small. You are a beloved child of God.

Trinity Cathedral 2016 Annual Appeal

"Each of you must give as you have made up your own mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
II Corinthians 9:7

We would like to thank the 184 individuals and families that have submitted their 2016 gift towards our 2016 Annual Appeal. As of November 15, we are at 39% of our goal of $1.5 million. It is important to know that our annual appeal last year came in slightly over $1 million and this year we are asking for a 50% increase. So please consider increasing your gift, if you are able to do so. Any increase would be greatly appreciated. Please mail or drop off your appeal card at the church office. You may also turn your card in during Sunday's offertory. You can also go online at www.trinitycathedral.org to submit your gift too.

With many thanks for our many blessing,
Rod Thomas and
Chris Tzimenatos

Advent Greens and
Christmas Flowers

As a gesture of anticipation, beginning on the first Sunday of Advent (November 29), your Trinity Cathedral Flower Committee will be using evergreens only in place of our regular Sunday flowers. We hope you enjoy the simplicity of those evergreens, as we "stop and wait" during this season of expectation.

As early as late summer, we have been formulating plans for The Christmas Adornment. On the Sundays, December 6th and 13th, we will be actively soliciting donations for The Christmas Adornment and flowers for Sunday services throughout the year. We work entirely from a budget supported by our Trinity family. Please consider remembering or honoring loved ones, or in thanksgiving for your blessings, with a donation for The Christmas Adornment.

Beginning November 29, there will be Donation Forms available on the bulletin board near the church office, at the Welcome Center at the Sunday Coffee Hours, and printed on the Cathedral Announcement Sheet of the Sunday Service Program or by following this link.

Thank you from your Trinity Cathedral Flower Committee.

COOK A TURKEY FOR TRINITY'S NOVEMBER 25 SAFE GROUND MEAL!

Are you an experienced turkey chef? Do you have an oven to share? We have 250+ pounds of frozen turkeys, that we need help cooking for next week's "Thanksgiving Eve" meal - and we don't have enough oven space at the Cathedral! We are asking for our Turkey Chefs to pick-up a turkey from the Cathedral on the weekend of November 21/22, cook it at home, then return the cooked turkey to Trinity Cathedral on the morning or early afternoon of Wednesday, November 25

GARAGE PARKING:
A NEW NEW SITUATION

Our discussion with Sutter Health about use of the public garage at the corner of 27th & N Street continues. The current arrangement varies slightly from the one included in last week's E-News.

For Sunday parking: Sutter Health is granting us an exception to the "no parking in valet spaces" for the ramp accessed from the 27th Street entrance. That is the entrance closest to the Cathedral. You may park in valet spaces located on that ramp. Please do not park in any of the reserved spaces located to the left of the gate entrance.

For evening events: Sutter Health's exception does not extend to evenings during the week. For evening and Saturday events, please park above the 3rd level of the 27th Street ramp, i.e. above the valet parking spaces. Do not park in any of the valet spaces. If you enter the garage from 28th Street, you may find parking on a lower level.

We encourage parishioners to get parking garage access cards, especially if you plan to be here for evening events. You may get the cards from the Bookshop. There is a form to fill out and a one-time $25.00 refundable deposit

Please contact Jerry Paré (916-930-8032; jpare@trinitycathedral.org) if you have questions.

Thank you for your cooperation.

St. Cecilia Wymondley Choral Evensong celebrates the

Feast of Saint Cecilia

Acclaimed as the Patron Saint of Music and Musicians, Cecilia was a third century martyr whose feast day falls on November 22nd. Music has been written in honor of her by musicians as diverse as Purcell, Handel, Britten, and Howells, to The Andrews Sisters, Brian Eno, and Paul Simon!

The Trinity Cathedral Choir celebrates the feast of our patron with Choral Evensong, on Thursday, November 19th at 6:00 pm. Included will be music by Bruce Neswick, Henry Ley, and Charles V. Stanford. The service will conclude with Herbert Howells' anthem "A Hymn for Saint Cecilia," based on a poem by Ursula Vaughan-Williams.

Choral Evensong is a lovely way to end a busy and noise-filled day. Please join us!

CLASSES

Holy Wholly One, Behold Me, Wholly One
Most of the science of philosophy has taught us that God is omnipotent- all powerful, omniscient- all knowing and omnipresent. Much of the theology of tradition tells us that God is Holy- in the vision of Isaiah: Holy Holy Holy. The Holy One is usually defined with a separate and exclusive nature. We will look at a revelation of the Divine as not exclusive but rather as the All Inclusive One. We will learn how to love, and be loved by, a Whole God with a Whole heart and how to love a Whole neighbor as the Whole self is loved.  This class will be facilitated by Morey Lloyd.

Mental Health from a Spiritual Perspective
We will look at the "root of bitterness"; and where it finds its way into the good soil and how this gets nourished. Not stopping there, how we (the community) must learn how to help "tend the garden" so that our own voice can grow stronger than the "voice of despair". We will refer to various texts and experiences. Tracing effect backward to primary cause, will help turn our mind to Good away from Evil when we realize we have the power to take charge of circumstance. This will be follow up discussion from the Mental Health 101 class and is facilitated by Vaughn Wolff.

Decorative Paper Cutting
If you're in the mood to do a little crafting, come see what amazing things you can create with nothing more than scissors, paper and glue. Paper cutting is a traditional folk craft practiced around the world. In this class, we will explore paper cutting techniques from Germany (scherenschnitte) and Poland (wycinanki). The class is free and all supplies will be provided in class. If you are interested in the class please contact Karen Olmstead, class facilitator, at misty.pumpkin4522@gmail.com.

Annual Transgender
Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil

Saturday, November 21, 2015, at 6:30 pm
at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral

Trinity Cathedral will host the annual interfaith candlelight vigil in observance of the 17th International Transgender Day of Remembrance. All are welcome.

Speakers:
Leon Burse, Transgender Youth Advocate
AmunDayo De Edwards, Integrated Praise Spiritual Center
JoAnna Michaels, Community Advocate

The International Transgender Day of Remembrance memorializes those killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The first memorial was a candlelight vigil in Boston in November 1999 to honor Rita Hester, murdered in 1998. Since then, annual memorials on this day have been observed around the world. This vigil will be dedicated to the memories of Carina Holleran, Carol Byers and Ruby Molina among our many brothers and sisters who have fallen to ignorance and intolerance.

Please join our reception after the memorial.

The Soul of Money
Meets in Room A at 10:15am

Based on Lynne Twist's book, The Soul of Money: Reclaiming the Wealth of Our Inner Resources. This is the last class.
GROWING in FAITH
is still in start-up mode.
Meets at 3:00pm in the Assembly Area

"Change ourselves. Change our hearts" and "get off of our butts and change the world!"
These are the two "how to's" that Dean Baker gave us in his sermon on November 1. What was the Dean talking about? How we can become part of what Presiding Bishop Curry calls "the Jesus Movement".

GROWING IN FAITH is an excellent way of changing ourselves; changing our hearts and getting off of our butts to be part of the Jesus Movement! How do we...how do YOU do this? Come and see!

What do we do? We gather at 3:00 in the "Upper Room" (also known as the Assembly Area). We form small groups. We reflect on Scripture using a method called Lectio Divina (no previous Bible knowledge necessary). We take a break. We pray together and we return to our daily lives enriched by this moment of our road trip with Jesus. Who is this "we"? There are your fellow members of Trinity participating in this Spirit filled process. There is a team of small group leaders to facilitate our discussions. Sound simple? It is. Following Jesus is simple...and not so simple. Becoming part of the Jesus Movement is simple...and not so simple. Bishop Curry and Dean Baker are challenging us. Come this Sunday and find out more. Just bring yourself, your questions, your curiosity. Jesus said to each of his disciples, "Come, follow me!" Take this opportunity to do just that.

Next Week and Beyond...

An Advent Journey Through the Gospels
Four Sundays at 10:15am beginning November 29

This book by Magrey R. deVega will be our guide for the four Sundays of Advent. Each week we will look at what one Gospel has to say about the season, eventually touching all four Gospels. Some material will be presented each week to get us started, but there will be lots of time for shared thoughts and discussion. Bud Swank is the leader.
TNAC Classes beginning December 3

A Peaceful Christmas:
Honest Communication that Connects
Facilitated by Alex Leach
Christmas and the Holidays can be tough. None of us want to be biting our tongues, or tip toeing around certain topics. Come learn and practice concrete communication skills to honestly connect this Christmas season. This two day class will cover the powerful skill of empathizing with difficult messages, and speaking up with compassion, setting boundaries and expressing gratitude. There is a way to talk openly and honestly with the in-laws that won't ruin Christmas morning.

Alex has been teaching communication skills for over three years in the Sacramento/Davis area. He has worked for the Relationship Skills Center, a non-profit in Sacramento working to teach communication skills to low-income families. He has been running a private practice teaching communication skills in Davis for over three years.

A Christmas Carol
Facilitated by Susan Hotchkiss
Ebenezer Scrooge had a lot to learn about being a compassionate, giving human being. Past life experiences had led him to put more time and effort into making money rather than cultivating relationships and hoarding cash rather than giving to those less fortunate. Ultimately this led to denying himself any quality of life.   Was there still time for him to change??? The story is a short one but chock full of 19th century issues we still battle today - poverty, class divisions, prison overcrowding. And the theme of redemption is ongoing and universal. Join us in the Cathedral Bookshop as we read A Christmas Carol aloud. Then on December 18th we will gather in the Assembly area to watch one of the many versions of this classic story.
A Crafting Retreat
Saturday, December 5 from 1-4 in the Great Hall

My name is Kelly Mieske and I craft A LOT.  Mostly knitting and crochet, but I dabble in a variety of other mediums. I would love to have this retreat be open to a wide variety of different crafts, just let me know what you need.

And isn't this just the perfect time of year for such a retreat with so much charity and gift giving in the air.

Perhaps you are like me and wonder if your hobby/pastime can also be a spiritual practice. Let's find out together.

This is call for all Trinity crafters to come together and share our passions. This is also an opportunity for those who want to learn.  For sure there will be knitters and crocheters with decades of experience who would be delighted to teach someone how to begin.

If you are interested or have any questions, please contact me at kmieske@gmail.com or (916) 719-8149.
