Trinity Cathedral 2016 Annual Appeal

"I place no value on anything I have or may possess, except in relation to the kingdom of God. If anything will advance the interests of the kingdom, it shall be given away or kept, only as by giving or keeping it I shall most promote the glory of Him to whom I owe all my hopes in time or eternity."
       - David Livingstone

Within two weeks we are at 32% of our goal of $1.5 million! Thank you to those who have submitted their 2016 gift. We are greatly appreciative to those members who increased their gift from last year by an average of 18%. Please mail or drop off your appeal card at the church office. You may also turn your card in during Sunday's offertory. You can also go online at www.trinitycathedral.org to submit your gift.

With many thanks for our many blessing,

Centering Prayer is a method of meditation that helps quiet the mind and participate in God's presence. It is a receptive form of prayer - a kind of resting in God.  Learn to just be...in the midst of God's love. All are welcome.

GARAGE PARKING:   A NEW SITUATION

Sutter Health has increased the number of spaces they have reserved for valet parking. This past week, both on Sunday and in the evenings, people found warning notices on their car windshields not to park in the valet spaces or they would be towed.

We have been in discussion with Sutter Health on numerous issues having to do with Trinity Cathedral's easement rights into the garage. The bottom line is that none of the spaces referred to in the contract are "designated," i.e. spaces specifically set aside for Trinity's use. Sutter Health is granting us an exception to the "no parking in valet spaces" for the first floor of the 27th Street entrance. You may park in those spaces or in the reserved spaces as you turn left from 27th Street into the garage. Sutter Health has valet spaces on the 2nd and 3rd levels of the 27th Street ramp in the garage. Please do not park in any of those spaces.

For those who come for evening events: Sutter Health's exception does not extend to evenings during the week. We will see if we can get permission to park in the reserved spaces but that is not the case yet. For evening and Saturday events, please park above the 3rd level of the 27th Street ramp. If you enter the garage from 28th Street, you may find parking on a lower level.

Please contact Jerry Paré (916-930-8032; jpare@trinitycathedral.org) if you have questions.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Thursday Night at the Cathedral

 on November 12

Compline - 6:00pm

Dinner - 6:30pm

 Classes - 7:00pm

CLASSES

Holy Wholly One, Behold Me, Wholly One
Most of the science of philosophy has taught us that God is omnipotent- all powerful, omniscient- all knowing and omnipresent. Much of the theology of tradition tells us that God is Holy- in the vision of Isaiah: Holy Holy Holy. The Holy One is usually defined with a separate and exclusive nature. We will look at a revelation of the Divine as not exclusive but rather as the All Inclusive One. We will learn how to love, and be loved by, a Whole God with a Whole heart and how to love a Whole neighbor as the Whole self is loved.  This class will be facilitated by Morey Lloyd.

Mental Health from a Spiritual Perspective
We will look at the "root of bitterness"; and where it finds its way into the good soil and how this gets nourished. Not stopping there, how we (the community) must learn how to help "tend the garden" so that our own voice can grow stronger than the "voice of despair". We will refer to various texts and experiences. Tracing effect backward to primary cause, will help turn our mind to Good away from Evil when we realize we have the power to take charge of circumstance. This will be follow up discussion from the Mental Health 101 class and is facilitated by Vaughn Wolff.

Decorative Paper Cutting
If you're in the mood to do a little crafting, come see what amazing things you can create with nothing more than scissors, paper and glue. Paper cutting is a traditional folk craft practiced around the world. In this class, we will explore paper cutting techniques from Germany (scherenschnitte) and Poland (wycinanki). The class is free and all supplies will be provided in class. If you are interested in the class please contact Karen Olmstead, class facilitator, at misty.pumpkin4522@gmail.com.

Cathedral Choristers to Jazz it up!

Please join us at the 9:00 am Sunday Eucharist on November 15th, as the Cathedral Choristers jazz things up, with Duke Ellington's sacred masterpiece "Come Sunday." 2015 is the fiftieth anniversary of Ellington's Sacred Concert held during the dedication of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. The choristers will be joined by a small jazz combo, so plan to be here!
Transforming Questions: 30/40's and Beyond
Meets in the Conference Room at 10:15am

We will continue discussing Transforming Questions, which invites faithful questioning for those new to the Christian faith and longtime members. We will explore, through God's Word, our own faith journey and continue to ask the questions that stir within us.  This study is  produced by Forward Movement and each participant will have their own guidebook to reference and reflect in. Questions? contact Amy Dierlam - dnarock@pacbell.net.

Newcomers' Group

Meets in Room C at 10:15am

A new group begins with Introductions.

All are invited to be with us especially Newcomers and visitors. If you have questions contact Randie Strike at email randie.trinity@gmail.com or 916-446-2513.

The Soul of Money The Soul of Money
Meets in Room A at 10:15am

Based on Lynne Twist's book, The Soul of Money: Reclaiming the Wealth of Our Inner Resources. This class continues through November 22. The book is available in our bookstore, and is recommended for those who want to gain the most from this enlightening topic. However, reading the book isn't necessary to participate in the class.
GROWING in FAITH
is still in start-up mode.
Meets at 3:00pm in the Assembly Area

"Change ourselves. Change our hearts" and "get off of our butts and change the world!"
These are the two "how to's" that Dean Baker gave us in his sermon on November 1. What was the Dean talking about? How we can become part of what Presiding Bishop Curry calls "the Jesus Movement".

GROWING IN FAITH is an excellent way of changing ourselves; changing our hearts and getting off of our butts to be part of the Jesus Movement! How do we...how do YOU do this? Come and see!

What do we do? We gather at 3:00 in the "Upper Room" (also known as the Assembly Area). We form small groups. We reflect on Scripture using a method called Lectio Divina (no previous Bible knowledge necessary). We take a break. We pray together and we return to our daily lives enriched by this moment of our road trip with Jesus. Who is this "we"? There are your fellow members of Trinity participating in this Spirit filled process. There is a team of small group leaders to facilitate our discussions. Sound simple? It is. Following Jesus is simple...and not so simple. Becoming part of the Jesus Movement is simple...and not so simple. Bishop Curry and Dean Baker are challenging us. Come this Sunday and find out more. Just bring yourself, your questions, your curiosity. Jesus said to each of his disciples, "Come, follow me!" Take this opportunity to do just that.

Next Week and Beyond...

St. Cecilia Wymondley Choral Evensong celebrates the

Feast of Saint Cecilia

Acclaimed as the Patron Saint of Music and Musicians, Cecilia was a third century martyr whose feast day falls on November 22nd. Music has been written in honor of her by musicians as diverse as Purcell, Handel, Britten, and Howells, to The Andrews Sisters, Brian Eno, and Paul Simon!

The Trinity Cathedral Choir celebrates the feast of our patron with Choral Evensong, on Thursday, November 19th at 6:00 pm. Included will be music by Bruce Neswick, Henry Ley, and Charles V. Stanford. The service will conclude with Herbert Howells' anthem "A Hymn for Saint Cecilia," based on a poem by Ursula Vaughan-Williams.

Choral Evensong is a lovely way to end a busy and noise-filled day. Please join us!

And here is the second of our lovely "water poems" written by TREE members.

The Waterfall
by Gayann Barnsley White

Whoosh!
Thunder in my ears,
Spray on my face,
Hands held tightly
Between our bodies.

Sheet of icy, smooth glass
Sliding down
Crashing waterfall
With fear in my heart.

Soft pool of dewy, wet light.
Landing, thudding
Into moving liquid
Grey and blue and green.
Safe and alive
The waterfall.
