"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Welcome to stewardship season!  Last Sunday we had our first in-gathering of pledges to support the ministries of Trinity Cathedral in 2016.  We will collect pledges again this Sunday at all of our worship services.  I encourage you to prayerfully consider the level of your generosity toward the Cathedral and express your intention in a pledge.  This is an exciting time in the Church.  With a new presiding bishop and a high level of energy in the congregation for spreading the love of Christ our future is full of possibility.  Last Sunday we had our largest ever Growing in Faith group begin the journey of deeper study and learning and we had a large turnout for the creative Day of the Dead service and potluck.  We have members developing creative ways of blessing and serving people outside the Cathedral.  I believe this is a great time to be a Christian and an Episcopalian and I encourage you to support this movement and momentum through your pledge.

You can watch the sermon preached by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry at the National Cathedral by clicking here

Trinity Cathedral 2016 Annual Appeal

Thank you to those who submitted their 2016 Annual Appeal cards at last Sunday's services, proof of the power of God's abundance! In one day we raised 9% of our goal of $1.5 million. A special thank you goes out to the 13 members who increased their 2016 gift by an average of 56% over 2015. Parishioners will have another opportunity to present their Annual Appeal cards for a blessing at our services on November 8. If you are unable to attend or wish to have more time, please either mail or drop off your appeal card at the church office. You can also go online at www.trinitycathedral.org to submit your gift.

With many thanks for our many blessings,
Rod Thomas

The Reading Corner...

There's always something new in our library, which you can check out on the first Sunday of the month.       ~~Phyllis Ehlert

Here is a book for children, adults and family reading:   The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. Even if you saw the movie, the book is better, presenting the tale of the Herdman family, an unchurched lot, who have engaged in smoking, drinking, and shoplifting. They go to church for snacks only to be cast in the Christmas pageant to which they add unconventional elements as they come to understand the Christmas story. Laughs abound.

Presiding Bishop Installation

by Charis Hill

Charis and Presiding Bishop Curry

I was fortunate and extremely blessed to attend the Installation of our new Presiding Bishop, Most Rev. Michael B. Curry, at Washington National Cathedral on November 1st, 2015. Since I lived six years in the Diocese of North Carolina before my move to Sacramento I got to know Michael personally and, like most North Carolina Episcopalians, fell in love with his passion and charisma. I am without a doubt that he is the right person to lead us forward as crazy Christians. On the eve of his installation I attended an intimate gathering of people from North Carolina to bid Michael farewell. As he entered the reception and saw me he grinned and opened his arms for an embrace as he strode towards me, exclaiming, "Oh, you made it!"  Then, using Brian's Burning Man blessing, I blessed him [see picture]. It was a very spiritually moving moment I will forever treasure. If you are interested, you can read my blog post about knowing Michael and his vision for loving our church forward: Click here to read it.

Family Space

You may have noticed some changes taking place in the West Transept of the cathedral. This is the side of the church closest to the Great Hall and the Nursery. We've taken out one of the back pews, moved things around a bit, and added a rug, rocking chair, and some quiet toys. This space offers young children and their families a place to play, look at books, rock a little one - stretch out during our services, which might seem a little long sometimes when you're small! Families are always welcome to sit anywhere in church; it's just nice to occasionally have an alternative. We hope to eventually add a small table for coloring and another rocking chair.

As the West Transept is also the most accessible entrance to the cathedral, we've also begun making more space for those with walkers and wheelchairs. We've put in one shortened pew, and plan to do some more creative arranging to make the space comfortable and safe. Please let us know if you have any suggestions as we continue to develop this area.
Cathedral Organ Restoration Project

We are happy to announce that Phase One of the Cathedral Organ Restoration Project has now been completed. The replacement pedal principal pipes in the façade of the organ have now been connected, voiced, and tuned. You will hear a much more solid and exciting bass sound from the Cathedral organ, much as it was when the organ was first installed in 1983. We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has supported this project thus far!

Meanwhile, things are moving forward with Phase Two, the completion of the Canon Grant Carey antiphonal organ! The engineers at Schoenstein organ builders are completing their designs for the two cases which will appear in the back of the Cathedral, and they have begun to receive some of the new pipe work from the pipe makers. We hope to have this delivered and installed in the spring of 2016.

For more information on Phase Two of the organ project follow this link to download a brochure and donor form.

And if you are planning to attend Canon Carey's ninetieth birthday celebration this Saturday afternoon, you'll hear more about it there too!
Potluck Dinner Church

Potluck dinner church is a more casual encounter with community and communion around a shared meal and theme. Everyone contributes to the experience by volunteering to bring the bean dip, or the opening prayer, a song, or the candles etc... All are welcome at the table and invited to offer what they have (bread, joy, hummus, questions...) and be open to receiving what is offered (punch, friendship, connections, cake...). Please send questions to Rev. Megan at megan@trinitycathedral.org. If you would like to contribute food/drink and/or liturgical pieces to the gathering, please let us know.

Your personal photos from Day of the Dead are available for pick up in the main office anytime.

SAVE THE DATE: Advent Potluck Dinner Church will be on Sunday December 13th at 5pm in the Cathedral. Hope to see you there!

Thursday Night at the Cathedral

 on November 5

Compline - 6:00pm

Dinner - 6:30pm

 Classes - 7:00pm

CLASSES

Holy Wholly One, Behold Me, Wholly One
Most of the science of philosophy has taught us that God is omnipotent- all powerful, omniscient- all knowing and omnipresent. Much of the theology of tradition tells us that God is Holy- in the vision of Isaiah: Holy Holy Holy. The Holy One is usually defined with a separate and exclusive nature. We will look at a revelation of the Divine as not exclusive but rather as the All Inclusive One. We will learn how to love, and be loved by, a Whole God with a Whole heart and how to love a Whole neighbor as the Whole self is loved.  This class will be facilitated by Morey Lloyd.

Mental Health from a Spiritual Perspective
We will look at the "root of bitterness"; and where it finds its way into the good soil and how this gets nourished. Not stopping there, how we (the community) must learn how to help "tend the garden" so that our own voice can grow stronger than the "voice of despair". We will refer to various texts and experiences. Tracing effect backward to primary cause, will help turn our mind to Good away from Evil when we realize we have the power to take charge of circumstance. This will be follow up discussion from the Mental Health 101 class and is facilitated by Vaughn Wolff.

Decorative Paper Cutting
If you're in the mood to do a little crafting, come see what amazing things you can create with nothing more than scissors, paper and glue. Paper cutting is a traditional folk craft practiced around the world. In this class, we will explore paper cutting techniques from Germany (scherenschnitte) and Poland (wycinanki). The class is free and all supplies will be provided in class. If you are interested in the class please contact Karen Olmstead, class facilitator, at misty.pumpkin4522@gmail.com.

GROWING in FAITH
is still in start-up mode.
Meets at 3:00pm in the Assembly Area

"Change ourselves. Change our hearts" and "get off of our butts and change the world!"
These are the two "how to's" that Dean Baker gave us in his sermon this last Sunday. What was the Dean talking about? How we can become part of what Presiding Bishop Curry calls "the Jesus Movement".

GROWING IN FAITH is an excellent way of changing ourselves; changing our hearts and getting off of our butts to be part of the Jesus Movement! How do we...how do YOU do this? Come and see!

What do we do? We gather at 3:00 in the "Upper Room" (also known as the Assembly Area). We form small groups. We reflect on Scripture using a method called Lectio Divina (no previous Bible knowledge necessary). We take a break. We pray together and we return to our daily lives enriched by this moment of our road trip with Jesus. Who is this "we"? There are your fellow members of Trinity participating in this Spirit filled process. There is a team of small group leaders to facilitate our discussions. Sound simple? It is. Following Jesus is simple...and not so simple. Becoming part of the Jesus Movement is simple...and not so simple. Bishop Curry and Dean Baker are challenging us. Come this Sunday and find out more. Just bring yourself, your questions, your curiosity. Jesus said to each of his disciples, "Come, follow me!" Take this opportunity to do just that.

Next Week and Beyond...

Cathedral Choristers to Jazz it up!

Please join us at the 9:00 am Sunday Eucharist on November 15th, as the Cathedral Choristers jazz things up, with Duke Ellington's sacred masterpiece "Come Sunday." 2015 is the fiftieth anniversary of Ellington's Sacred Concert held during the dedication of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. The choristers will be joined by a small jazz combo, so plan to be here!

St. Cecilia Wymondley Choral Evensong celebrates the

Feast of Saint Cecilia

Acclaimed as the Patron Saint of Music and Musicians, Cecilia was a third century martyr whose feast day falls on November 22nd. Music has been written in honor of her by musicians as diverse as Purcell, Handel, Britten, and Howells, to The Andrews Sisters, Brian Eno, and Paul Simon!

The Trinity Cathedral Choir celebrates the feast of our patron with Choral Evensong, on Thursday, November 19th at 6:00 pm. Included will be music by Bruce Neswick, Henry Ley, and Charles V. Stanford. The service will conclude with Herbert Howells' anthem "A Hymn for Saint Cecilia," based on a poem by Ursula Vaughan-Williams.

Choral Evensong is a lovely way to end a busy and noise-filled day. Please join us!
