"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Andrea, Mark & Brian

This past weekend Andrea and I visited our son Mark for his parents weekend at the West Point Prep School. We hadn't seen him since he started his basic training in July.  It was great to see him and sad to leave him and I'm happy to report he is thriving and pleased with his choice to go to West Point.

Prior to coming home, I stopped for two days at "815" --  shorthand for the office of the Episcopal Church located at 815 2nd Avenue, NYC.  I participated in some interviews for a new staff member at 815.  It was my first time visiting the offices and it was a treat to visit the "mothership" and to meet people who serve the church in a variety of capacities.  I happened to be there during Presiding Bishop Elect Michael Curry's first two days in the office.  I didn't get to see him as he was very busy meeting his new staff, but there was certainly excitement in the air.

On Sunday Bishop Curry will be installed as the Presiding Bishop at a service at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.  I am very excited about his upcoming ministry.  As I have written about before, I believe we are at the beginning of a new era in the church.  We have left the doldrums and are on the balls of our feet - ready to love the world into wholeness in new ways.  Bishop Curry has an infectious energy and I believe his election was an expression of our desire to be a different kind of church - a church that moves out into the world with a ministry of compassion and reconciliation.

If you want to learn more about Bishop Curry, I commend a recent interview by the Religion News Service and this video interview from PBS.
Blessings,
Brian

got mice?
We've been fostering a very friendly and mellow stray gray cat while a facial wound heals, and he'd love to soon find a "forever home" where he can continue to happily play and purr and mouse.  Vet said he's young, neutered, already chipped [prior owner hasn't claimed], and aside from the scratched cheek appeared in very good health.  If you or someone you know might be interested in adopting this lovely cat, please contact Georgianna at dugongs@sbcglobal.net or (916) 266-1802.  Thanks!

The Reading Corner...

There's always something new in our library, which you can check out on the first Sunday of the month.       ~~Phyllis Ehlert

In his title, Arthur Simon asks: How much is enough? Hungering for God in an Affluent Culture. He states that at the beginning of this century, the United States had experienced ten years of unbroken economic growth and yet the New York Times reported that "most of the nation's 72 million families feel that they cannot make ends meet." He counsels self examination. He asks, how are we using our time, our abilities and money? Somebody asked Albert Schweitzer why he always traveled second class. He replied, because there is no third class.

Covered California Open Enrollment Is Around The Corner

Covered California has brought the security of affordable health care to more than 2 million people since health care coverage began in January 2014. But 1.3 million eligible Californians still lack coverage. There are serious risks to not getting covered: those who remain uninsured put their health and finances in jeopardy. Let me share two testimonials with you. Diana Parret says Covered California saved her life. Laid off from her job and unable to afford a doctor, Parret signed up through the health care marketplace in February 2014 for a health plan with a subsidy. Her first doctor's appointment revealed an aggressive cancer. Her April surgery was a success. Recovering well, Parret calls Covered California "a godsend." One month after signing up for health coverage through Covered California, Sarah Kinsumba had a sudden health crisis. She ended up needing brain surgery, during which she had a stroke. After two months of rehabilitation, she was doing much better and was back home. The treatment cost $2.5 million, but with her Covered California subsidized insurance, she is only paying $7,000. "It's amazing," she said.

The uninsured may also face a tax penalty for not enrolling. Penalties for not being insured are getting more expensive. In 2014 an uninsured single person with an income of $40,000 paid $299 in penalties, for 2015 the penalty is $594 and goes up to $796 in 2016. A family of four with an income of $70,000 paid $497 dollars in penalties in 2014 for not being uninsured. It will cost them $988 in penalties this year and $2,085 in 2016 for no insurance.   Its time to stop coping with health issues and time to get insurance. Covered California offers good health care. Open enrollment begins November 1, 2015 and ends January 31, 2016.

 on October 29

Dinner - 6:30pm

 Classes - 7:00pm

CLASSES

Holy Wholly One, Behold Me, Wholly One
Most of the science of philosophy has taught us that God is omnipotent- all powerful, omniscient- all knowing and omnipresent. Much of the theology of tradition tells us that God is Holy- in the vision of Isaiah: Holy Holy Holy. The Holy One is usually defined with a separate and exclusive nature. We will look at a revelation of the Divine as not exclusive but rather as the All Inclusive One. We will learn how to love, and be loved by, a Whole God with a Whole heart and how to love a Whole neighbor as the Whole self is loved.  This class will be facilitated by Morey Lloyd.

Mental Health from a Spiritual Perspective
We will look at the "root of bitterness"; and where it finds its way into the good soil and how this gets nourished. Not stopping there, how we (the community) must learn how to help "tend the garden" so that our own voice can grow stronger than the "voice of despair". We will refer to various texts and experiences. Tracing effect backward to primary cause, will help turn our mind to Good away from Evil when we realize we have the power to take charge of circumstance. This will be follow up discussion from the Mental Health 101 class and is facilitated by Vaughn Wolff.

Decorative Paper Cutting
If you're in the mood to do a little crafting, come see what amazing things you can create with nothing more than scissors, paper and glue. Paper cutting is a traditional folk craft practiced around the world. In this class, we will explore paper cutting techniques from Germany (scherenschnitte) and Poland (wycinanki). The class is free and all supplies will be provided in class. If you are interested in the class please contact Karen Olmstead, class facilitator, at misty.pumpkin4522@gmail.com.

Gabriel Fauré
"Requiem" by Gabriel Fauré sung on All Saints Day

Please join the Cathedral Choir on Sunday, November 1 at the 11:15 AM Eucharist as we sing the "Requiem" Mass by Gabriel Fauré. Fauré (1845 - 1924) was one of the foremost French musicians of his generation. A highly gifted organist, pianist, and composer, he later became Director of the Paris Conservatory, influencing many musicians of the next generation including Maurice Ravel. He was for many years the organist of the church of Le Madeleine in Paris, in succession to his teacher Camille Saint-Saens.

His Requiem was composed in 1888 "for the pure pleasure of it." In it he avoids the foreboding mood of many Requiem settings of the time, for a more gentle melodic style. It certainly remains his most beautiful and enduring work. We will be using a special chamber orchestration of the work utilizing organ, harp, violin, and cello accompaniment.
Book Signing
in the Bookshop
Sunday, November 1
10:15 - 11:15am

"Our Garden" by parishioner Andy Domek, is a children's picture book about the joy of a father and child as they create and tend a vegetable garden together. Readers experience the entire arc of a summer gardening season, where stinky shoes keep raccoons away, scarecrows don't scare crows, and purple tomatoes taste candy sweet. Time spent in "Our Garden" is filled with laughter, home grown food, and a family's love.

If you're looking for the perfect Christmas gift for a child or family gardener AND help the Trinity garden raise a few bucks, then join Trinity member and local children's author Andy Domek for a book signing of his new children's picture book "Our Garden" on November 1, 10:30-11:15 at the Trinity Cathedral Bookshop. Andy will be donating $2 of every copy sold at the book signing to the Trinity Cathedral garden. Hope to see you there!

Also, here is a Sacbee article if you'd like more information about the book.

GROWING in FAITH
Starts this Sunday, November 1 at 3:00pm

Come and check it out! Yes, we prepare adults for baptism, confirmation and reception into the Episcopal Church through Growing in Faith. This is also your opportunity to deepen your faith through small group discussions focused on the Gospel of the day.

What do we do? We gather at 3:00 in the "Upper Room" (also known as the Assembly Area). We gather. We reflect on Scripture using a method called Lectio Divina (no previous Bible knowledge necessary). We take a break. We pray together and we return to our daily lives enriched by this moment of our road trip with Jesus. Who is this "we"? There is a team of small group leaders to facilitate our discussions. Sound simple? It is. Following Jesus is simple...and not so simple. Come this Sunday and find out more. Just bring yourself, your questions, your curiosity. Jesus said to each of his disciples, "Come, follow me!" Take this opportunity to do just that.

Camp Noel Porter

Bishop Beisner Has Designated

November 8 as

Camp Noel Porter Sunday!

We will have a special presentation in the Cathedral on  November 8 at 10:15 to share a video  and hear of our own Trinity Cathedral campers and staff who enjoyed Summer Camp this year.

Camp Noel Porter has served as the Camp and Retreat Center for the Episcopal diocese of Northern California since 1953, located a mile out of Tahoe City next to Lake Tahoe. Over the years many have passed through the camp and have been refreshed, renewed and inspired both spiritually and physically.

Those of you with children who have attended Summer camp at Noel Porter, or those who have attended the camp and retreat center yourselves, know what a beautiful and nurturing place it can be.

Camp Noel Porter is facing a significant revenue short-fall. After numerous years of  dwindling income from all sources,
the board of directors has discerned a clear need to restructure with an eye towards sustaining the future of church camp in this diocese.

This is not a process that can or should be done hurriedly or in panic. Therefore, at the request of the bishop, we are coming to you to ask for financial breathing room we need to discern a new way forward.

We are inviting you to participate in this offering. Please prayerfully consider what you can do to help and come listen to our youth who have experienced the beauty of Camp Noel Porter.

Envelopes will be provided for your donations or you can write checks to Camp Noel Porter and put them in the offering plate.  They will be sent to the camp.

On behalf of Camp Noel Porter,

Canon Nancy Tennyson
Camp Noel Porter Board Member
