The Rev. Canon Dr. Winifred "Winnie" Gaines

Things I learned from Winnie...

#1  If you are going to make a mistake, err on the side of the generosity of God...

I came to Trinity as the seminarian at the beginning of my second year.  Learning the rubrics of life as an Episcopalian was valued to be an important task.  How to worship, what colors, which days, Year A, B or C (divide the year in which Advent begins by 3 and check the remainder) was quite the task for this former Methodist.  All the while, I began to notice something different about Winnie.  It seemed she took the "rules" and divided them by compassion to get her answer.  I remember a story in particular, too long to retell here, where she baptized a parishioner who struggled to ascent to the demands of the Prayer Book, but rather recognized the leaning of his heart as being enough for God.  He was claimed as Christ's own that day in the face of doubts that were yet to find resolve.

#2  Pray for those you don't like...

My office and Winnie's were both on the second floor.  Her door was usually open and it was often convenient to pop in and seek advice.  On occasion, I would seek her council as to how to live with someone I found difficult to abide.  She would listen carefully then tell me to pray for them.  Argh!  I soon learned that not only would her answer not change, but she was right.  Sometimes the best I could do was to light a candle in the East Transept hoping God would change the relationship for the good.  Other times I would incorporate the concern in the confessional part of the liturgy.  Yet others times I would insert our story silently in the Prayers of the People.  None of that would have occurred to me had she not modeled a different imagination for being in the world.

#3  Prayer changes things...it really does.

Winnie and Grant have been great stewards of keeping prayer a continual act here at Trinity Cathedral.  One could argue that occupying staff time to do a midweek service where perhaps only one showed up was a misuse of resources.  They have both inspired us to keep the daily services going whether one, none, or ten show up.  Why?  Because prayer changes things.  Winnie seriously believed that prayer was how God was active in particular ways.  When Winnie came to visit people in need you could just see their shoulders drop because something much bigger than Winnie was at work.  Something ancient.  Something deeply rooted in Jesus.  She was willing to be that conduit of love actualized when someone sick or in grief needed to experience it most.  I am a big advocate of our daily services and of the ongoing healing ministry of the church.  I came to learn from Winnie that prayer is more than positive thinking; it does indeed change things.  (As I write this article I overhear someone calling the front desk to get the times of our weekday services.  Her ministry lives on...)

#4  Take the elevator...

(I'm still working on this one, though I now park on the 7th floor of the parking garage and walk to the office.  It's three-fourths of a mile!)  I used to "shadow" Winnie when I first arrived, hoping to learn how to pray with people whose needs were so great.  We would walk over to Sutter General and then while I took the elevator, she religiously took the stairs!  I never had to wait for her while exiting at the 4th floor.  She lived a healthful life, managing her fat intake to minimize any strain on her body.  She wanted to be doing this work to which she had so wondrously been called long past one's normal retirement.

I could go on but will simply end with gratitude that our lives crossed and for the many gifts she has left our Cathedral.

Blessings,
Lynell +

got mice?
We've been fostering a very friendly and mellow stray gray cat while a facial wound heals, and he'd love to soon find a "forever home" where he can continue to happily play and purr and mouse.  Vet said he's young, neutered, already chipped [prior owner hasn't claimed], and aside from the scratched cheek appeared in very good health.  If you or someone you know might be interested in adopting this lovely cat, please contact Georgianna at dugongs@sbcglobal.net or (916) 266-1802.  Thanks!

"Our Garden" by parishioner Andy Domek, is a children's picture book about the joy of a father and child as they create and tend a vegetable garden together. Readers experience the entire arc of a summer gardening season, where stinky shoes keep raccoons away, scarecrows don't scare crows, and purple tomatoes taste candy sweet. Time spent in "Our Garden" is filled with laughter, home grown food, and a family's love.

If you're looking for the perfect Christmas gift for a child or family gardener AND help the Trinity garden raise a few bucks, then join Trinity member and local children's author Andy Domek for a book signing of his new children's picture book "Our Garden" on November 1, 10:30-11:15 at the Trinity Cathedral Bookshop. Andy will be donating $2 of every copy sold at the book signing to the Trinity Cathedral garden. Hope to see you there!

Also, here is a Sacbee article if you'd like more information about the book.

Thursday Night at the Cathedral

 on October 22

Compline - 6:00pm

Dinner - 6:30pm

 Classes - 7:00pm

CLASSES

Holy Wholly One, Behold Me, Wholly One
Most of the science of philosophy has taught us that God is omnipotent- all powerful, omniscient- all knowing and omnipresent. Much of the theology of tradition tells us that God is Holy- in the vision of Isaiah: Holy Holy Holy. The Holy One is usually defined with a separate and exclusive nature. We will look at a revelation of the Divine as not exclusive but rather as the All Inclusive One. We will learn how to love, and be loved by, a Whole God with a Whole heart and how to love a Whole neighbor as the Whole self is loved.  This class will be facilitated by Morey Lloyd.

Mental Health from a Spiritual Perspective
We will look at the "root of bitterness"; and where it finds its way into the good soil and how this gets nourished. Not stopping there, how we (the community) must learn how to help "tend the garden" so that our own voice can grow stronger than the "voice of despair". We will refer to various texts and experiences. Tracing effect backward to primary cause, will help turn our mind to Good away from Evil when we realize we have the power to take charge of circumstance. This will be follow up discussion from the Mental Health 101 class and is facilitated by Vaughn Wolff.

Decorative Paper Cutting
If you're in the mood to do a little crafting, come see what amazing things you can create with nothing more than scissors, paper and glue. Paper cutting is a traditional folk craft practiced around the world. In this class, we will explore paper cutting techniques from Germany (scherenschnitte) and Poland (wycinanki). The class is free and all supplies will be provided in class. If you are interested in the class please contact Karen Olmstead, class facilitator, at misty.pumpkin4522@gmail.com.

Gabriel Fauré
"Requiem" by Gabriel Fauré sung on All Saints Day

Please join the Cathedral Choir on Sunday, November 1 at the 11:15 AM Eucharist as we sing the "Requiem" Mass by Gabriel Fauré. Fauré (1845 - 1924) was one of the foremost French musicians of his generation. A highly gifted organist, pianist, and composer, he later became Director of the Paris Conservatory, influencing many musicians of the next generation including Maurice Ravel. He was for many years the organist of the church of Le Madeleine in Paris, in succession to his teacher Camille Saint-Saens.

His Requiem was composed in 1888 "for the pure pleasure of it." In it he avoids the foreboding mood of many Requiem settings of the time, for a more gentle melodic style. It certainly remains his most beautiful and enduring work. We will be using a special chamber orchestration of the work utilizing organ, harp, violin, and cello accompaniment.
GROWING in FAITH BEGINS NOVEMBER 1

"Growing in Faith gives you tools for life." "The prayer times was inspirational and a great way to be exposed to different types of prayer!" "The small groups really helped bring the Scriptures alive for me." "Declaring my faith in front of the congregation was scary but strengthening at the same time."

These are just a few of the remarks of participants in last year's "Growing in Faith." Growing in Faith is a program through which adults prepare for baptism, confirmation, reception into the Episcopal Church, or reaffirmation of faith. It is a wonderful opportunity to dig deep within yourself, wrestle with faith issues and seek to understand your religious beliefs more deeply. Participants include those preparing for one of the Church "goals" mentioned above as well as sponsors, a leadership team, prayer leaders and clergy. We meet on Sunday afternoons from 3 - 5 PM from November through May 19. "At first the time commitment seemed long. At the end, I realized the journey was only a beginning," commented one participant.

Why get baptized? Adult baptism is your opportunity to formally become part of the Body of Christ.

Why get confirmed? Many of us were baptized as children. Confirmation is our chance to formally "take ownership" of our baptism.

What about "being received into the Episcopal Church"? If you were baptized in another denomination, this is an opportunity to formally declare yourself an Episcopalian.

And what is the "reaffirmation of faith"? Many people feel a need to formally reaffirm their Christian faith commitment at specific times in their lives. These may include returning to church or responding to a personal crisis or taking the opportunity to reflect on what being a Christian is all about for you at this time.

What is this "formally" bit? Growing in Faith is more than weekly meetings. It includes a retreat to really examine the Apostles Creed (part of our declaration when we baptize). It includes rites during Sunday services to express our commitment to the process. It includes meeting with and celebrating with Bishop Beisner at the Easter Vigil.

Join us on Sunday November 1 at 3:00 in the Assembly Area to find out more! If you like, come for the introduction and stay for the potluck to follow.

Growing in Faith is a special journey. If you are asked to join and walk the path, say "yes." If you aren't asked but want to walk with us, contact Jerry Paré (jpare@trinitycathedral.org; 916-930-8032) to sign up or....come and check it out on Sunday November 1...see YOU at 3 PM!

Camp Noel Porter

Bishop Beisner Has Designated

November 8 as

Camp Noel Porter Sunday!

We will have a special presentation in the Cathedral on  November 8 at 10:15 to share a video  and hear of our own Trinity Cathedral campers and staff who enjoyed Summer Camp this year.

Camp Noel Porter has served as the Camp and Retreat Center for the Episcopal diocese of Northern California since 1953, located a mile out of Tahoe City next to Lake Tahoe. Over the years many have passed through the camp and have been refreshed, renewed and inspired both spiritually and physically.

Those of you with children who have attended Summer camp at Noel Porter, or those who have attended the camp and retreat center yourselves, know what a beautiful and nurturing place it can be.

Camp Noel Porter is facing a significant revenue short-fall. After numerous years of  dwindling income from all sources,
the board of directors has discerned a clear need to restructure with an eye towards sustaining the future of church camp in this diocese.

This is not a process that can or should be done hurriedly or in panic. Therefore, at the request of the bishop, we are coming to you to ask for financial breathing room we need to discern a new way forward.

We are inviting you to participate in this offering. Please prayerfully consider what you can do to help and come listen to our youth who have experienced the beauty of Camp Noel Porter.

Envelopes will be provided for your donations or you can write checks to Camp Noel Porter and put them in the offering plate.  They will be sent to the camp.

On behalf of Camp Noel Porter,

Canon Nancy Tennyson
Camp Noel Porter Board Member
