"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

While it seems that summer just ended, Halloween is just around the corner. Anticipation for this popular holiday is especially noticeable around Trinity in casual Sunday school conversations and in excitement for the upcoming Pumpkin Night. Outside of our walls it seems like Halloween decorations are everywhere, from craft stores to grocery shops. You can't miss it. Many of these places have also started carrying Dia De Los Muertos items as well. While I have seen many shops display these items in the Halloween section, Day of the Dead is actually a distinct Holy Day that has special spiritual significance.

On November 1st, Catholic and many Protestant churches celebrate All Saints' Day in honor of all of the Saints who have blessed our world. On November 2nd many celebrate All Souls' Day to remember all of the faithful departed. These occasions are beautifully holy times to come together and worship with special focus on the impact that saints and lost loved ones have had on our life together. Day of the Dead is in line with this intention. It originated in Mexico and is now celebrated in many places throughout the globe. November 1st is set aside for families and community to come together to remember the life and soul of lost loved ones. Altars are constructed and ornately decorated in honor of the dead. They traditionally include tributes and offerings to the dead.

Last year Trinity hosted the first annual Day of the Dead Potluck Dinner Church. Day of the Dead specialist Nicole Fiorella installed this beautiful altar in the Cathedral in honor of the occasion. I am thrilled to announce that we are hosting again this year. We will worship and eat together with art and a special talk on the religious and cultural significance of Day of the Dead by Nicole.

We need your help to create our beautiful altar. Please bring photos and tributes to your lost loved ones to adorn this year's altar. You can bring them with you to dinner church or drop them in my office box in advance.

I hope that you and your friends and neighbors are able to come to Trinity on Sunday November 1st at 5pm for Dinner Church. In this season where we have recently lost many remarkable saints in our community, it will be such a gift to break bread together and remember the gift of their witness in our life together.

Blessings,
Megan +

got mice?
We've been fostering a very friendly and mellow stray gray cat while a facial wound heals, and he'd love to soon find a "forever home" where he can continue to happily play and purr and mouse.  Vet said he's young, neutered, already chipped [prior owner hasn't claimed], and aside from the scratched cheek appeared in very good health.  If you or someone you know might be interested in adopting this lovely cat, please contact Georgianna at dugongs@sbcglobal.net or (916) 266-1802.  Thanks!

Tour de Pink for
Breast Cancer

October will bring the 3 year anniversary of my breast cancer diagnosis. You may have heard me speak about what an incredible healing experience riding in the Young Survival Coalition's Tour de Pink has been the past 2 years, and Jorge and I are excited to be riding again this year! On October 23-25, starting in Santa Barbara, CA, we will ride our bikes over 200 miles with other young survivors, co-survivors, and others to raise money for the Young Survival Coalition (YSC) and increase awareness that young women can and do get breast cancer.

While 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their life, less than 7% of diagnoses are made in women under 40. A breast cancer diagnosis can be especially shocking and challenging for young women. At a time in life most often reserved for family and career, issues of treatment, recovery and survivorship suddenly take top priority. With treatment, the chances of survival for young women diagnosed with early breast cancer (like me!) are good. However, breast cancers in younger women tend to be more aggressive and more likely to require chemotherapy. The YSC is providing an important source of information and support for young survivors and those who love them!

We are asking for your support-all donations big or small are appreciated! The YSC is a 501( c )(3) not-for-profit organization. To make a donation, please visit my Tour de Pink page by following this link.

The Reading Corner...

There's always something new in our library, which you can check out on the first Sunday of the month.       ~~Phyllis Ehlert

Warriors of God: Richard the Lionheart and Saladin in the Third Crusade by Richard Reston, Jr., is described as a dual biography, pitting the romantic personification of chivalry against the iconic hero of the Muslim world.  Can anything good come out of such a conflict?

 on October 15

Compline - 6:00pm

Dinner - 6:30pm

 Classes - 7:00pm

CLASSES

Holy Wholly One, Behold Me, Wholly One
Most of the science of philosophy has taught us that God is omnipotent- all powerful, omniscient- all knowing and omnipresent. Much of the theology of tradition tells us that God is Holy- in the vision of Isaiah: Holy Holy Holy. The Holy One is usually defined with a separate and exclusive nature. We will look at a revelation of the Divine as not exclusive but rather as the All Inclusive One. We will learn how to love, and be loved by, a Whole God with a Whole heart and how to love a Whole neighbor as the Whole self is loved.  This class will be facilitated by Morey Lloyd.

Coming of Age in Mississippi
TONIGHT, the Coming of Age in Mississippi group will meet in the Trinity Conference Room at 7:00 pm.  We will have a short discussion about the book and then Kathleen Montgomery will discuss her recent trip to the South with a video presentation.   Even if you have not been attending, you are invited to attend the last night of this group. This class is facilitated by Susan Hotchkiss.

Mental Health 101
This series will delve into the complex issues related to mental health. We will share information about the local system of support, the places where glaring gaps exist, and our county's plans to augment services.
OCTOBER 15 - Sacramento County Mental Health Services Continuum of Care. Kelli Weaver, who is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Mental Health Program Manager with Sacramento County Behavioral Health Services, will lead our sixth and final portion of this TNAC series. Since 2010, Ms. Weaver has been a manager for the Division of Behavioral Health Services, responsible for the overall management and coordination of adult mental health outpatient programs.  She also participates in many collaborative efforts, working with law enforcement, the probation department, hospital emergency departments, the Sacramento main jail, homeless programs, the Public Defender's office and the courts, alcohol and drug service providers to develop innovative new approaches to addressing mental illness in Sacramento County. Topics of Ms. Weaver's presentation will include the values that guide the provision of mental health services in our county; how to access mental health services; and, the mental health services currently available for children/youth, transition-age youth, and adults.  The presentation will also cover the challenges facing the continuum of care and the framework for rebalancing the Sacramento County Mental Health Services Continuum of Care.

"Poets or Mystics? Where is the line?
Facilitated by Susan Van Dyke
In this class, we'll explore some familiar names such as Mary Oliver and Steven Mitchell as well as some perhaps less well known such as Hafiz and St Catherine of Siena. Group participation will be highly encouraged. Please join us as we explore.

Service of Remembrance

On Sunday, October 18th at 4:00 pm, Trinity Cathedral will host the seventeenth annual Service of Remembrance in memory of our brothers and sisters who have suffered violent deaths by murder or suicide as a result of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

In the past, this interfaith service has been organized by the Sacramento Chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and other community groups. This year, Trinity Cathedral assumes responsibility for this significant event.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend to stand in solidarity with the LGBT community and its allies.

Volunteers are needed to help with the planning and organization of the service and the reception following. Contact Michael Donnoe at mdonnoe@gmail.com or Kathleen Montgomery at ladyiris49@gmail.com to offer your time and creativity!

"Remember their lives with love. Bear witness to the atrocity of their deaths. Affirm together that violence and hatred must end."

GROWING in FAITH BEGINS NOVEMBER 1

"Growing in Faith gives you tools for life." "The prayer times was inspirational and a great way to be exposed to different types of prayer!" "The small groups really helped bring the Scriptures alive for me." "Declaring my faith in front of the congregation was scary but strengthening at the same time."

These are just a few of the remarks of participants in last year's "Growing in Faith." Growing in Faith is a program through which adults prepare for baptism, confirmation, reception into the Episcopal Church, or reaffirmation of faith. It is a wonderful opportunity to dig deep within yourself, wrestle with faith issues and seek to understand your religious beliefs more deeply. Participants include those preparing for one of the Church "goals" mentioned above as well as sponsors, a leadership team, prayer leaders and clergy. We meet on Sunday afternoons from 3 - 5 PM from November through May 19. "At first the time commitment seemed long. At the end, I realized the journey was only a beginning," commented one participant.

Why get baptized? Adult baptism is your opportunity to formally become part of the Body of Christ.

Why get confirmed? Many of us were baptized as children. Confirmation is our chance to formally "take ownership" of our baptism.

What about "being received into the Episcopal Church"? If you were baptized in another denomination, this is an opportunity to formally declare yourself an Episcopalian.

And what is the "reaffirmation of faith"? Many people feel a need to formally reaffirm their Christian faith commitment at specific times in their lives. These may include returning to church or responding to a personal crisis or taking the opportunity to reflect on what being a Christian is all about for you at this time.

What is this "formally" bit? Growing in Faith is more than weekly meetings. It includes a retreat to really examine the Apostles Creed (part of our declaration when we baptize). It includes rites during Sunday services to express our commitment to the process. It includes meeting with and celebrating with Bishop Beisner at the Easter Vigil.

Join us on Sunday November 1 at 3:00 in the Assembly Area to find out more! If you like, come for the introduction and stay for the potluck to follow. (See Rev Megan Anderson's article above.)

Growing in Faith is a special journey. If you are asked to join and walk the path, say "yes." If you aren't asked but want to walk with us, contact Jerry Paré (jpare@trinitycathedral.org; 916-930-8032) to sign up or....come and check it out on Sunday November 1...see YOU at 3 PM!
All Soul's Service

to help out with the event.

Floyd School - Trips for Kids

A Benefit Dinner and Auction will be held at

Trinity Cathedral on Friday, November 20 at 6:30 pm

The purpose of the event is to raise money for Field Trips for Floyd School Students for the 2015-2016 School year. Our goal is $10,000.

Our Men's Group has graciously agreed to prepare the  dinner. Ed Hollingshead's band "QUIET" will play for us.

We need auction items for both a silent auction and live auction. Some suggestions might be tickets to a sporting event or theater production, items to go in a themed basket, or individual items that could be auctioned. A weekend at a cabin or other destination, a service  such as tutoring or music lessons, etc. would be very helpful.

We also need volunteers to help serve dinner, tend bar and assist with the auction.

If you can help with auction items or serve that night please contact Canon Tennyson at nntennyson@gmail.com.
We will also have  table in the Great Hall on Sundays to sign up by the Floyd School bulletin board.

Tickets will be available soon: $30 per person or $50 for 2 people.

Please save the date.  It will be a great evening!

TREE Logo TREE poetry...

by Ann Rothschild

Poetry from you - for you.

At our TNAC class on the Pope's Encyclical Letter, we discussed how precious water, clean water was, and Gay Ann asked us to write a short poem of our childhood memories of water.

I will share them with you over the next few weeks. This one is by Karen Olmsted - thank you, Karen.

Sun sparkling,
Dancing on water.
I sit on my mother's shoulders, broad and freckled.
She dives into the cool water;
We slide along the bottom
In the dim coolness.
We spring up to the surface,
Water droplets flying.
We laugh, then take a deep breath, and
Down we go again.
