I want to remind everybody that the memorial service for Canon Winnie Gaines will be tomorrow, Friday, night at 7:00 p.m.  We are arranging for the service to be projected into the Great Hall in case the Cathedral can't accommodate all those who want to attend.

Several months ago we changed our monthly family service to the first Sunday of the month.  As a result of this change in scheduling, the family service in October fell on October 4, the feast of St. Francis.  Rather than have a separate animal blessing service later in the day, The Rev. Kathy Hopner included the blessing as part of the family service.  I was able to attend and take photographs.  It was a great service.  We had about 100 people in attendance and lots and lots of animals.  Here are some of the photographs I took.

Blessings,
Brian

Support the
Cathedral Organ Restoration Project
when you adopt-a-pipe
The second phase of our Cathedral Organ Restoration Project is fully underway. The antiphonal organ at the North end of the Cathedral will enhance the sound of our magnificent organ, and provide new colors for the organist to use. In honor of his long standing commitment to worship and music at Trinity Cathedral, the completed antiphonal division is being named in honor of the Reverend Dr Grant S Carey, Canon Emeritus.

One way to support the project is through our "Adopt-a-pipe" program. For $650, you can "adopt" one of the 183 pipes being added to the organ. You can even "adopt" more than one of them! Visit the Cathedral Organ Restoration page for details, and to download a contribution form.

Thank you everyone, for your ongoing support!

Tour de Pink for
Breast Cancer

October will bring the 3 year anniversary of my breast cancer diagnosis. You may have heard me speak about what an incredible healing experience riding in the Young Survival Coalition's Tour de Pink has been the past 2 years, and Jorge and I are excited to be riding again this year! On October 23-25, starting in Santa Barbara, CA, we will ride our bikes over 200 miles with other young survivors, co-survivors, and others to raise money for the Young Survival Coalition (YSC) and increase awareness that young women can and do get breast cancer.

While 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their life, less than 7% of diagnoses are made in women under 40. A breast cancer diagnosis can be especially shocking and challenging for young women. At a time in life most often reserved for family and career, issues of treatment, recovery and survivorship suddenly take top priority. With treatment, the chances of survival for young women diagnosed with early breast cancer (like me!) are good. However, breast cancers in younger women tend to be more aggressive and more likely to require chemotherapy. The YSC is providing an important source of information and support for young survivors and those who love them!

We are asking for your support-all donations big or small are appreciated! The YSC is a 501( c )(3) not-for-profit organization. To make a donation, please visit my Tour de Pink page by following this link.

The Reading Corner...

There's always something new in our library, which you can check out on the first Sunday of the month.       ~~Phyllis Ehlert

Historiphiles (that's a real word) will be drawn to Dogs of God: Columbus, the Inquisition, and the Defeat of the Moors by James Reston, Jr., which relates how although we may perceive Isabella and Ferdinand to be enlightened with their backing of exploration by Columbus, they were really power-grabbers consolidating their grip on the Iberian peninsula by use of the Inquisition. Not nice people.

From Loaves & Fishes...

We need your help. We'd like to survey our guests to find out more about their situations and how Loaves & Fishes can help them. We'd like to individually ask them some basic questions in a respectful way. With hundreds of guests coming daily for lunch and services, it's a challenge!

So we've come up with a series of questions to ask our guests. The responses will be recorded on iPads. Would you like to assist in this way?
We will be conducting the survey on Wednesday, October 14th. We are looking for 30 - 35 volunteers 18 year of age or older to help us between the hours of 10:00 AM and 2:30 PM.  The day will start with a brief training and Q and A. Familiarity with the services of Loaves & Fishes is helpful but not required.

If you would like to volunteer, you can sign up by clicking here. We do need all volunteers to pre-register no later than October 9th.

Questions? Call me at (916) 637-2502 or Janet Green at (916) 637-2514.

Thank you!

CLASSES

Holy Wholly One, Behold Me, Wholly One
Most of the science of philosophy has taught us that God is omnipotent- all powerful, omniscient- all knowing and omnipresent. Much of the theology of tradition tells us that God is Holy- in the vision of Isaiah: Holy Holy Holy. The Holy One is usually defined with a separate and exclusive nature. We will look at a revelation of the Divine as not exclusive but rather as the All Inclusive One. We will learn how to love, and be loved by, a Whole God with a Whole heart and how to love a Whole neighbor as the Whole self is loved.  This class will be facilitated by Morey Lloyd.

Coming of Age in Mississippi
On August 6, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the voting rights, making poll taxes and literacy tests as prerequisites to vote unconstitutional.  Anne Moody's Coming of Age in Mississippi chronicles her journey as a young girl and as a woman in the thick of the Civil Rights movement in the South.  Come and discuss her journey on Thursday nights in the Cathedral Bookstore.  The book is available for purchase in the bookstore.  This will be facilitated by Susan Hotchkiss.

Mental Health 101
This series will delve into the complex issues related to mental health. We will share information about the local system of support, the places where glaring gaps exist, and our county's plans to augment services.
OCTOBER 8 - Innovation and Integration: California's Mental Health System
Toby Ewing is the Executive Director of the Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission. The commission is the body that oversees Prop 63, the Mental Health Services Act.  Funded by a one percent tax on millionaires, Prop 63 has generated approximately $14.4 billion for public mental health programs since it was approved by the voters in 2005. Dr. Ewing has a background in governance reform, government oversight and improving outcomes of public programs. He has worked on a range of public policy issues, including mental health, child welfare, immigrant integration, workforce and education, and veterans projects.

Mr. Ewing's presentation will explore the fundamental investments necessary to make dynamic shifts in public mental health services for Californians. He will describe why risk taking and teaming up with non-traditional partners could be key strategies for change.

"Poets or Mystics? Where is the line?

In the past, this interfaith service has been organized by the Sacramento Chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and other community groups. This year, Trinity Cathedral assumes responsibility for this significant event.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend to stand in solidarity with the LGBT community and its allies.

From the Sacramento & Sierra Nevada Buddhist Climate Action Network, an invitation:

Sacramento Interfaith Climate March
on November 1, 2015
We invite you to join us in an Interfaith Climate March to support the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Paris and California's groundbreaking efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The march will take place from 11 am to 4 pm on November 1, 2015. We will gather at 11 am on the West Steps of the Capitol in Sacramento (near the corner of  L St. and 10th St.), walk to the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers, and back to the West Steps of the Capitol.

On November 30, 2015, the world's leaders meet in Paris at the U.N. Climate Change Conference with the objective of forging a binding international agreement to address climate change. At the same time, California has a groundbreaking program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and is planning even more innovative actions in the future.

We want our leaders to know that we want them to take vigorous and effective actions to address the climate crisis.

Organized by the Sacramento & Sierra Nevada Buddhist Climate Action Network, the march is open to all who care about the changing climate. We invite members of all religious traditions to participate in order to raise public awareness that climate change is a moral issue of concern to many faith traditions.

Rothschild's two cents'worth:
As the Pope's Encyclical Letter points out, climate change and environmental degradation affects every aspect of our lives and our planet. Dying corals from a warming ocean affect the biota around them, which affect the fish populations, which affect our food chain and yes, our dinner tables. We are all connected. Please come to the march and raise your voices for action.
TREE will be there.

Floyd School - Trips for Kids

A Benefit Dinner and Auction will be held at

Trinity Cathedral on Friday, November 20 at 6:30 pm

The purpose of the event is to raise money for Field Trips for Floyd School Students for the 2015-2016 School year. Our goal is $10,000.

Our Men's Group has graciously agreed to prepare the  dinner. Ed Hollingshead's band "QUIET" will play for us.

We need auction items for both a silent auction and live auction. Some suggestions might be tickets to a sporting event or theater production, items to go in a themed basket, or individual items that could be auctioned. A weekend at a cabin or other destination, a service  such as tutoring or music lessons, etc. would be very helpful.

We also need volunteers to help serve dinner, tend bar and assist with the auction.

If you can help with auction items or serve that night please contact Canon Tennyson at nntennyson@gmail.com.
We will also have  table in the Great Hall on Sundays to sign up by the Floyd School bulletin board.

Tickets will be available soon: $30 per person or $50 for 2 people.

Please save the date.  It will be a great evening!
